Overview

La Fortuna Chalet Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, sleeps 4 comfortably, optional blowup bed for children

Our 'Castle in The Clouds' is just seven km from Volcano Arenal, perched 700m above sea-level overlooking the volcano, rainforest, pastures and Lake Arenal and close to many of the most popular amenities the region has to offer . Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee in our covered gazebo or in the 25 sq. metre sunroom. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is also available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation!

Although our small stretch of the road is usually in good shape it is steep and the road coming into El Castillo is very rough. We highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle for all your excursions in Costa Rica. We now feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. You'll enjoy our garden paradise yard featuring a variety of local and tropical plants designed to maximize your Costa Rica experience.

Now-Book Local Tours and Attractions: Hannah and Tomas, our on-site hosts can help you book many local tours and attractions for you on your arrival, saving you the hassle of running around. From zipline tours, hot springs spas and volcano hikes to a horseback ride to a real eco-farm, you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like, but you'll never run out of things to do in the area. Just ask when you arrive and we can make recommendations and reservations for you.

July 2011: If you catch the new reality show 'Love in the Wild' airing on CTV in Canada or NBC in the US, you'll experience life in El Castillo. They were filming the series when we visited in March and almost all of the scenes were shot in and around our little neighbourhood.

About Joe Anderson

We're a semi-retired couple gay couple who divide our time between homes in Canada, The United States and Costa Rica.

Joe Anderson purchased this chalet in 2010

Why Joe Anderson chose La Fortuna

We fell in love with Costa Rica on our first visit here in 2007 and came to the Arenal area in 2010 when we had this home custom built for us. We love 'places at the end of the road' where we can experience authentic and unique characters. El Castillo is a true 'Tico' community. Apart from a dozen or so ex-pats from around the world, our neighbours are locals-farmers, labourers and professionals who live and work in this beautiful corner of the world. When we first stood on this piece of land we immediately knew that it was a one-of-a-kind view, and that has been confirmed by the hundreds of guests who have stayed here in the last four years. We're proud to be one of the most-popular destination properties in Costa Rica, enjoying super-host status and a five-star rating on every site. All our guests remark on the million-dollar view, the accommodations, the peace and the many local activities, but above all, they praise the friendly local people and how they make every one of guests feel at home and welcome.

What makes this chalet unique

Our house features quiet corners where even two couples or a family can find solitude. Whether in the second floor sunroom with its sweeping view of the volcano, the lake and the neighbouring jungle ravines, the secluded gazebo, a quiet chair on the front porch, sitting by the pool or taking a quiet walk in the tropical garden, this home offers many ways to commune with nature and connect with your inner self.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an absolutely incredible time in El Castillo en las Nubes! The views from every direction are amazing- farm land, lake, cloud rainforest & volcano. You can see it all from a top the mountains this house is perched so perfectly on. We unfortunately were only there for a few days (wish longer) but felt we got to do and see a lot in those three days. The house is beautiful and the kitchen is stocked with everything you will need and more. We met Hannah & Tomas, their hosts who own La Gavilana, they are so sweet and helped us with everything! Definitely request an order of their homemade bread & cookies and make sure to try the coffee beans from the plantation near by! We loved seeing all the horses and cows grazing on the grasses around the property- make sure to close the gate because they truly do get so close! We took advantage of their recommendations and did the full package at Sky Adventures (amazing zip lining), ATVing around farmlands, the jungle and volcano & make sure to go to the local hot springs day or night (mini Tabacon river). We also ventured to Nuevo Arenal to try the best (& only) brewery in Costa Rica- it was fun! You may also want to get a 4x4 but really only need it for the road up to the house because it is perched so high up and the roads are gravel and dirt. We would definitely recommend this place and hope one day to return again to this beautiful place! Thanks & Pura Vida! Krysten

Perfect.

  • 5 of 5
I have been to Costa Rica many times and even stayed long term a few years ago...this was by far my favorite trip and location! The home is beautiful, well-kept and the perfect size for the 3 of us who traveled. The view was amazing, but I have to say my favorite part of the house was the kitchen that was fully stocked with all the things you need to cook. Because of the remote location, we had planned on cooking most meals so we were thrilled to have all the utensils, pots, pans, etc. to do so!! (if you've traveled and rented homes before, you know a fully stocked kitchen is hard to come by!)

You *definitely* need a car and be sure to pick up groceries and stock up on your favorite adult beverages in La Fortuna, as the smaller stores in the town are a little pricier. We had dinner & lunch a few times at the Soda at the bottom of the mountain as well as Pizza Johns. Both were delicious and the perfect Costa Rican cuisine to finish off a day of exploring.

Hannah and Thomas were amazing hosts and easily accessible. They own a small shop with handmade art, crafts, hot sauce and oils right down the road.. we brought some hot sauce home and I only wish we had more money on us because Hannah's art was very cool!!

We did the Sky Trek Zipline & Sky Walk (hanging bridges)... the Sky Walk was a little underwhelming but the ziplines are a MUST DO. There are also plenty of trails to waterfalls right outside the door. (Hannah & Thomas can give you good directions) My personal favorite hike was the grueling 5 hour climb up Cerro Chato. It was so hard and we were crawling on our hands up the stairs when we got back to the house.. but it was a great way to take in the fresh air and see the rainforest. Unfortunately, it rained on us the whole way up and we couldn't really see the emerald green lagoon because of the fog, but it was still pretty cool to say we "swam in a volcano". ;)

I would definitely recommend this home to anyone who is out to relax and take in the Pura Vida Costa Rican lifestyle. There are plenty of trails and activities in driving distance to keep you busy.. but it's such a great place to cook up a casado, whip up a good cocktail and enjoy the view! :) We will definitely be returning!!

Amazing villa with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5
loved the villa, especially the conservatory area outside the bedrooms where we sipped home made caipirinhas with home made guacamole. we even saw the volcano and we went in the rainy season! we were very fortunate with the weather. the views from the villa and grounds are fantastic, and we love that it was right at the end of the village high up on the hill, it felt nice and remote and private. the villa was very comfortable and the bedrooms were gorgeous. the pool was great to cool off in. we would high;y recommend!

Wonderful Oasis!

  • 5 of 5
Wonderful!

We stayed at El Castillo in March 2013 & loved every bit of it!

The property has everything you need. All updated & not just nice, but very nice with so many little touches that put it over the top. The views are amazing! The wildlife in the trees is just what you want when you go to a tropical paradise.

It is a bit off the beaten path, which was perfect for us. Yes the roads are a bit rough, but if you’re driving through the Arenal area you should already be prepared for that.

We met Pizza John at his restaurant which was a nice respite after a long drive. He led us to the property & we enjoyed his company so much that we asked him to stay for a drink. The owners knew we were coming from our Costa Rican wedding & had a bottle of champagne waiting for us – another very nice touch. We took advantage of the local convenience store & restaurant & had everything we needed. We had no problems getting to & from the property, just be aware that you need a bit more time, but it’s worth it to have your own oasis. Pizza John arranged a horseback ride with the local guy (meaning the guy down the street, a true local) who met us at the house in the morning with horses.

Our only regret is that we didn’t have more time here. We would absolutely recommend this property!

Great house with amazing views

  • 4 of 5
Overall, a very good experience.

The owner was always friendly and has been very flexible with our requests.

The house was great, very clean and well maintained, with two beautiful rooms and bathrooms. The kitchen was nicely equiped. The swimming pool is not big but you really have a stunning view from it, as well as from the entire house.

But this wonderful view and environment can also be a drawback for some people and this is the only reason why we are rating this house 4/5 instead of 5/5.

The house is located far away from the first city (la fortuna). We were in the house with our parents, and this was kind of an issue. Local shops and restaurants are ok for one or two days but not for a week, and not (always) for persons coming from a main european city. Besides the distance and duration (40min), the road is difficult in the last 20min and can even be very uncomfortable during the last 5min (a 4x4 is a must have !).

However, we enjoyed our stay tremendously and would recommend this house.

Trip of a life time!

  • 5 of 5
There isn't enough space in this review to share with everyone the experiences we shared while staying at this amazing location!
First, Joe is the best owner we have rented from. He is very timely in his responses and does a fantastic job getting you to his location and providing you a ton to do if you opt to venture out.
The home is stunning. The drive to alone is an adventure! The views are simply breathtaking. The home is equipped with EVERYTHING you will need to make your stay comfortable.
The village is so welcoming! We were invited to both a Xmas Eve and Xmas day dinner by locals we met as we ventured out! Our caretakers were incredibility helpful. Make sure you have a lunch with them, their food is incredible! The quality of their companionship will go unmatched.
If you desire to get away from the masses and to avoid tourist traps, this is the place to come. There certainly plenty of those placed to visit however, if you are into sustainable living, local feel, and adventure, this is the place to come.
I would highly suggest taking the hike up the volcano, go horse bike riding, sit in the hot springs, and most importantly RELAX at their home.

Thank you Joe for making your home available for others to use! We have used homeaway several times and this was by far our best experience!

Arenal Volcano. Lake Arenal. Backs onto Arenal National Forest. Close to La Fortuna and Tabacon Resort. Volcano Arenal is the second-most-visited tourist attraction in Costa Rica, after Manuel Antonio. Our village is located 10 km off the main highway inside the National Park in the quaint village of El Castillo (population 300). Lonely Planet recommended, El Castillo is the perfect base to explore the many attractions this area has to offer. Within the village, you'll find horseback riding, restaurants, the butterfly conservatory, the serpentarium, canoe and kayak rentals and a pulperia (village store). Within a comfortable drive, you'll find the SkyTram, zipline tours, whitewater rafting, the Hanging Bridges, the Arenal Observatory, yoga, hiking trails, Monteverde National Park and a dozen or more hot-springs resorts to suit any budget.

Breaking news-they're filming M.Night Shyamalin's 'After Earth' starring Will and Jaden Smith in our neighbourhood month of February.

Other Activities: Hiking-our European visitors rave about the many interesting hiking trails starting right at your front door.

Horseback riding- 150 metres down the road.

Butterflies or snakes-both museums are walkable from the house

Hot Springs-the area is famous for a dozen hot spring resorts where a day pass is as little as $15pp or join the locals at the 'free' springs right off the main highway.

Ziplining-You have several choices within a few minutes drive of thehouse

SkyTram-for those who prefer a less strenuous ride, take the SkyTram right to the base of the volcano.

Kayak rentals-in the village, explore Lake Arenal and its many islands.

ATV rentals-10 minutes away, guided ATV tours of the area.

The Volcano-choose from several vantage points including the Observatory or the National park.

Massage Therapy-walk-ins welcome or our host can book an in-home massage for you.

Yoga-available at Racho Margot in the village, a world-class eco retreat.

Or just relax in the gazebo or by the pool
