This is a great vacation destination located in a residential neighborhood in the heart of Portland's Historic West End district. You will be just a minute's walk away from great eating...a gourmet deli (Aurora's), great brick oven pizza (Bonobo's) and fantastic European cusine at Caiola's Restaurant. You can enjoy great live music in a small venue just minutes away at 'One Longfellow Square' and then there is the Portland Museum of Art down the street and around the corner. You can also be off on a bike and down the hill to ride the beautiful bike paths along Casco Bay. (Bike rental avaliable, only a 5 minutes walk from home).
Visit the historic Old Port District .... you can walk or bike there. It has a wealth of great restaurants, cafes, bars, parks, and of course shopping and If you like fresh seafood you are in the right place to consume your fill of lobster, crabs, clams, shrimp, haddock and of course local oysters!
You can go to local cinemas, see independent films, local theater, comedy clubs, chamber and classical music venues and of course the beach for swimming, kayaking, boating...! Truly something for everyone.
Our vacation apartment is warm, welcoming and cozy with wide pumpkin pine floors and two exposed chimneys. It is housed in a typical large New England home on the second floor with a completely private and separate entrance.
Nestled in the heart of the West End on a quiet residential dead end street there is no passing traffic to disturb you. You look out to our courtyard and front garden. In the kitchen we provide teas/coffee/spices as well as all the basics you would need to cook at home if you wish. The two bedrooms are very simple and peaceful with queen beds and duvets of goose down. We have many books for you to browse through and enjoy as well as a Sound System where you can dock your IPod and also listen to CD's from our eclectic collection...Jazz to the worlds most famous Arias to French Wrap... hopefully something for everyone.
The airport (Portland International Jetport) is just a ten minute taxi ride away and the bus/train station is down the hill. You can fly into Boston's Logan Airport and take a bus to Portland (they leave every hour). Remember that it would be completely doable to explore Portland by foot and/or bike...there is no need for a car unless you want to further your adventure to the many other interesting places within reasonable driving distance. For example, Freeport, Maine, offers the super bowl of factory store shopping...just a 20 minute ride north. You may be familiar with LL Bean, J Crew, Gap, Northface, Brooks Brothers, Cole Hahn, Reebok, to name only a few...
There are churches, banks, cafes, restaurants, art galleries... all within walking distance.
I hope that this description and overview will give you a general sense of the kind of experience available to you while staying in our small cozy apartment in beautiful Portland, Maine.
Please note that this is a completely non smoking property, that is on the second floor with step up and step downs as well as a claw foot bathtub. It is a charming, warm and even romantic space, but not a good fit for everyone. It is not suited for children or folks who have any significant physical limitations.

Our apartment is off the beaten path, but right in Portland's well known West End district. If you are looking for a typical, upscale modern apartment this may not be for you, but if you are looking for old, charming, cozy and peaceful we think you will love this space.
It is a private 2nd floor apartment with a totally private and separate entrance in a typical older New England home.
Two-bedrooms, sleeps four, but is really suited for 2 or 3 adults as it is a small space. Furnished w/all amenities including washer and dryer, WiFi/cable TV, IPod sound system and private parking right in front.
Queen size beds w/goose down duvets. Bathroom w/claw foot tub/shower. Fully stocked kitchen (teas/coffee/spices).
You don't need to use your car...park and walk everywhere! Museum/market/dining/shopping...
Take a Ferry and bike on the many Islands off Portland. Music, music and more music just a short walk away...
Maine Medical Center 5 minute walk
Airport, Bus and Train station all just a 10 minute drive.
My husband and I bought this house in 2001 and lived in this apartment for 10 years. My husband worked at Maine Medical Center just a few minutes away and is now semi-retired. We love the city of Portland and especially the West End. We biked and walked everywhere we needed or wanted to go...winter/summer! We have a small home north of Portland and want to retain our well loved house on Houlton Street by sharing it with you and others who want to visit this very special part of the world!
Janey Barthelette purchased this apartment in 2001
This property is unique...it is warm, simple and charming. It is not a good fit for everyone as it is small and old school, you will not find any trendy modern touches here. it is inviting and peaceful filled with interesting books and music. So, if you are looking for modern/predictable hotel style lodging this space is not for you.
It is located right in the heart of the famous WestEnd district of Portland, but is located on a quiet and private residential street that has no drive thru traffic, making it peaceful and quiet, perfect for sleeping in...
We provide private parking for one vehicle right in front of the house, if you have another vehicle or guest visiting they must park on the city street or in a parking garage. This space is not suited for small children.
The very best part of this apartment is it's location. It affords easy access to several great restaurants, funky cafes, delicatessens and coffee shops. Downtown Congress Street with it's museums, more restaurants, shops and weekly farmer's market is but a block away. Merrill and Cumberland County auditoriums as well as the Old Port are also reasonably walkable (although the walk home in very cold or very hot weather would take some effort as it is uphill all the way!). We also found the neighborhood easy to walk - many of these past fabulous old homes and gardens. The owner and neighbors were friendly and helpful. The sitting area of the apartment is quite small but the photos are accurate and complete, the beds are comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and everything was in good working order and very clean. We spent two weeks in the summer, so found the washer and dryer in the apartment to be especially welcome. We would eagerly recommend this second floor apartment to anyone who is comfortable with stairs.
My husband and I enjoyed a stay at this wonderful apartment. It was centrally located, and was perfect. We loved the charm of this old quaint place, from the sloping floors, to the claw foot tub. We tried all of the recommendations for restaurants, and grocers. And the tenants downstairs were very helpful and friendly. Jane was wonderful to work with and this little gem was clean, and well maintained. Although there was no AC, the fans did the trick.
Stayed a long weekend, (4 days), in this lovely Portland West End apartment. Two couples, ages 54-65. Apartment was immaculate and incredibly well appointed for a VRBO rental. The owners have made great use of the available space with not an inch wasted. Kitchen was very well stocked with cooking needs, there was a great collection of CD's, a D/W AND a washer & dryer, two comfortable beds and a lovely garden area, all packed into a pocket off a dead end street, (which = quiet), in West End.
No need for a car, as we walked everywhere, (and I DO mean everywhere), in Portland.
Thank you JaneyB & Chris for sharing your home with us!
This was a charming apartment on the second floor of an old house in Portland's west end. It is walking distance to everything, and had a lovely "secret garden" quality. It was clean, quiet and comfortable, with a very amiable downstairs tenant ready and willing to help with anything since the owner wasn't present. Unfortunately, it was very hot the first night, and there was no air conditioning, apparently usually not needed in Portland, but my sister and I were quite uncomfortable...fans just don't do it. Once it cooled off, though, we were fine. We also had some problems with the shower and toilet, but these were fixed asap. I wouldn't recommend this place for older folks due to the inherent danger of having to step high in and out of the old claw foot tub as well as all the irregularities in the floor boards, a real tripping hazard. The owner made this clear when she said "this place isn't for everyone". But if you like old and charming, and sort of a French garret feel, this place will please you. The owner's books and lovely little works of art were also so pleasing. Overall, I'd recommend it-just beware the tub, floorboards, and if it matters to you, lack of air conditioning...Even Portland gets hot and humid!
We really enjoyed our stay at the apartment and it was perfect in everyway....We loved the location and charm of the apartment. It was within walking distance to everything in Portland. The apartment was clean and provided everything one would need for a pleasant stay. Unfortunately we arrived at the beginning of a heat wave and even though the apartment came with 3 fans......air conditioning would have been a big plus! We would definately consider staying here again if the opportunity to return to Portland ever came our way.
Great city location in quiet neighborhood, but just a few minutes walk to restaurants, deli, music venues, museum, bars,
