About owner/property manager

Hello my name is Christopher and my wife Helen and I have lived in Alaska for the past 43. We traveled extensively over the last fifeteen trying to decide where we wanted to live next and Florida came up the winner. We purchased the Canal House first and came down from Alaska every chance we had and fell in love with Nature Coast and historic Hudson Florida.

In 2012 we decided to purchase a second home on Hudson Crk closer to the Gulf and turn the Canal House into vacation destination for other people to enjoy as we did.

Helen and I both still work in Alaska on the North Slope but live full time in Florida. We work a 3 week on 3 week off schedule.

owner/property manager purchased this house in 2010

Why owner/property manager chose Hudson

Hudson Creek is natural spring fed water way unlike many of the man made canal neighbor hoods in the area. Rich in history from pirates who would use it as a hide away from the Spanish Armada to the Sportsman lodge that occupied the ground where The Canal house is today until it burned down in 1943.

What makes this house unique

It is a sturdy comfortable home that we felt an immediate connection to on beautful water front lot. The first visit to The Canal House together we noticed a commotion in the Creek looking through the kitchen. We quickly ran out side to the dock and watched a dolphin feeding on bait fish using the seawall to corner its prey.

As the Gulf of Mexico waters cool the Manatee seek refuge at the spring waters that bubble up at the headwaters of Hudson Creek, our back yard. They are usually present from November to April and use the Creek as a breeding area.

Great home! Perfect for a getaway

  • 5 of 5
I have to say that this home was spotless, well appointed and had all the modern conveniences we expect at a hotel. Chris, the owner was so helpful and available BUT gave us all the privacy we needed. The dock was great to launch kayaks (provided by owners) it is fantastic. Would stay again there if i am in the area.

Wonderful Vacation Properrty

We stayed here because of all the great reviews and I can say they were right on target. We had such a good time both at the home and visiting nearby activities. I think this was the best stocked vacation home I've stayed at.

Great house, very comfortable, nice neighbors. We especially enjoyed the daily visits from the manatees. Not there all the time of year but was almost daily during February. 15 was the highest count. Nice area to walk around. Great restaurant called Get Hooked just within walking distance. Owner available to all your needs

Loved it so much, we hate to tell the truth!

  • 5 of 5
I hesitate to write an honest review – because I don’t want the Canal House to beome so popular I can’t get a reservation when I want one!! Our 8 days were fantastic! The 3 of us (24, 51 & 76 yrs old!) loved our time and were sad to have to leave what was a watery paradise and wildlife superhighway! The house was immaculate & the furnishings very comfortable, making it easy to kick back and relax. In spite of a lovely home, our favorite moments were just outside the door. We eagerly awoke to see what new bird might be hanging out on the deck or hunting the water, and, without exception, we were never disappointed! The fish were fantastic – they seemed to be rejoicing through dramatic multiple leaps out of the water, shimmering in the sunshine. Beautiful.
We could not have been more pleased with the kayaks available for use. My son and I paddled out to the gulf (easy!) most evenings to watch the sun set and, on our return “home,” enjoyed the multitude of birds preparing for their evening roost in the trees (and docks). Although only one of us saw a manatee in the beginning, on Christmas Eve a big fellow with a scar on his back swam beneath my son’s kayak multiple times. Now THAT was exciting!
On Christmas morning, “Scarback” returned, with 14 friendsThey stayed all day long, and must have been fighting for the best grazing rights as they were quite active: slapping their tails, snorting and vocalizing!
We loved having the propane grill and the firepit, and simply ran out of time before we could use the bicycles and floats. But we will return!!
Our last night, we didn’t want to cook or travel, so we met some friends just around the corner at a highly recommended restaurant called “GET HOOKED.” Gotta say, the exterior turned “someone” off but so glad the rest of us prevailed. The food was FANTASTIC and we did, indeed, get hooked… even that “someone!”
While in Hudson, if you don’t want to sit still, there’s a lot to do. Of course, Busch Gardens in Tampa calls, but the Lowry Zoo was excellent as well. The Turpin Springs Sponge Docks are just down the road and you can see the harvested sponges, and stroll the shops. Super day! Back to the Canal House, can’t say enough positive about it. The place was fully equipped, right down to the beach towels, and the owner was very kind, as were the neighbors! You won’t be disappointed… but I will be if you have the house when I want it again!!

Ideal family vacation house and area

  • 5 of 5
What a joy our vacation was staying at the Canal House in Hudson, Florida. When we first arrived, the owners greeted us. They made our stay comfortable and easy with their wonderful customer service.
The Canal House is a nice sized home for our family of five (two adults and three boys ages 2, 8 & 9) and is well decorated and maintained. Appliances are updated and the home is tidy and comfortable, making managing a family’s meals, laundry, and daily necessities easy. Its location is on a quiet, tucked away street in Hudson. The neighborhood is safe and family friendly, ideal for bicyclists and pedestrians. The backyard is large and you can walk back to a fire pit with chairs and a floating dock that gives access to the water. We used the backyard extensively, as well as the provided two kayaks, two adult bicycles, floating rafts and grill.
Exploring the waterway system and the wildlife around Hudson provided many hours of fun and learning opportunities about the area. Fish jumping out of the water at dawn and dusk was a pleasant way to begin and end a day. While kayaking, our two older sons had the opportunity to drift over the top of manatees that came to the fresh warm water spring within yards of the dock. Directly across from the Canal House’s dock is a peninsula of mangroves which draws in much wildlife. The many types of birds we viewed right off the backyard were a joy to watch, such as bitterns, herons, osprey, cormorants, ibis, storks, diving ducks, egrets, vultures, and to our astonishment wild parrots. The water was plentiful with fish such as mullet, gar fish and other species that inhabit the brackish waters.
As for restaurants and bars you have Hurricane Hank's and Get Hooked within an easy walking distance. Other establishments about a mile or two away are The Cove and Jim's right on Hudson Beach. In the northern direction there is the Fisherman's Shack and Cooper's Wholesale Shrimp (Old Dixie Highway). Of course you will have more than enough to select from on Route 19 if you decide not to frequent the neighborhood restaurants and bars. Mom cooked most meals in the well equipped kitchen at the Canal House. There’s a good grocery within a mile. Traffic in the area and off Route 19 was minimal and without congestion.
The Canal House and Hudson area had Dad reminiscing about his times vacationing in Florida, laid back, off the beaten path and affordable fun. This is an ideal vacation house for a family or for couples.
