This two bedroom, 1 1/2 bath home is perfect for families. One Queen bedroom, one full bedroom with a queen size flip out futon Also featuring a twin size rollaway and a twin size sofa in the living room to provide more than enough sleeping space for six people. The home features beautiful hardwood floors in the living room and dining room. A nice fully equipped eat in kitchen with a built in sub-zero fridge, new gas range and garbage disposal. Also on the fist floor is a 1/2 bath with brand new energy efficient washer / dryer.

The back yard is simply magical with it's ancient fig tree and beautiful landscaping. Perfect for entertaining, complete with a large charcoal grill.

San Francisco 15 minutes away.....: Just two blocks from Essex house is the Ashby Avenue BART station. Just hop on BART and in 15 short minutes you'll be in the heart of San Francisco. Enjoy all the tourist attractions, Union Square shopping, Pier 39 munching, Alcatraz Island touring and Ghiradelli Square for chocolates to add that final sweet touch to your day. Then hop back on the train and in 15 minutes you'll be back home enjoying our quiet neighborhood in Berkeley.

Berkeley dining.....: Berkeley is know around the world for our fine restaurants. Famed chef Alice Waters' restaurant Chez Panise is in our Ghourmet Ghetto. There are 100's of other world class restaurants. My personal favorites are Gather Restaurant on Oxford, Angeline's Louisianna Kitchen on Shattuck Avenue, and Trattoria La Siciliana in the Elmwood District. Whatever food your in the mood for, you'll be able to find it in Berkeley, and most likely, just a few minutes walk from the front door of Essex House.

Arts and Culture....: For a small city, Berkeley is extremely blessed with numerous artists and arts organizations. Ashby Stage, home of Shotgun Players is literally a 5 minute walk from Essex House. Berkeley Rep and Aurora Theater located in the Downtown Arts District are well known for producing world class, cutting edge works. West Berkeley is the home to many local artists who open their studios to visitors throughout the year, and every weekend in December. Just perfect

We were five to live in the house, two adults and three kids. There were no surprises, everything was as described, and Kevin, the owner, although we did not know when we will arrive there, had everything set for us. This house is in a perfect location, in a quite neighborhood, and close to everything interesting in Berkeley, its university as well as food stores like wholefoods and Berkeley Bowl. If you don't have a car and you are visiting San Francisco, this place is OK since the BART (a kind of metro) is some yards from the house. If you have a car there is plenty of free parking nearby. In short, this is the place we will rent next time in the Bay area we felt like at home, maybe better. I strongly recommend it.

It was great to come home to unwind in the Essex house after a long day of
touring and walking. In a quiet neighborhood. Very convenient to the BART
station and Whole Foods market. We walked Telegraph Ave north towards
UC Berkeley and explored its shops and restaurants. If you need a car for
a day trip to Napa, Enterprise is a couple of blocks away. Kevin's
recommendation for Gather restaurant was spot-on; other Berkeley restaurants
we tried were Venus and Paste Bene. Our only culinary disappointment was
the cancellation of our Chez Panisse reservation due to a fire at that venerable
institution :-(.

Convenient, comfortable and homey

What a treat to stay in a real, comfortable home on a business trip. The convenience to BART and to shopping and restaurants is hard to beat. Berkeley Bowl grocery is such a great resource to have right there, and being able to cook your own meals in a well-stocked kitchen means you can make the most of it. Business brings me to Berkeley on a regular basis, and this place will be the first place I check for availability from now on.
Recommended for:  Pet-friendly, Adventure Seekers, Tourists without a Car, Families with Young Children

Charming home in Berkeley

Had a great stay at Kevin's house on Essex St. in Berkeley. It's in a quiet neighborhood very close to the Ashby BART station. Parking is on-street, but we never had a problem finding a space nearby. The house is perfect for four people - two in each of the bedrooms, which are comfortable and fairly large. You could have up to seven people in the house, but it would be a little crowded. The kitchen has everything you need, including a very large refrigerator. The dining room table easily accommodates six people, and there's plenty of furniture in the living room (also a nice sized room). Very nice yard, although we didn't really use it. The upstairs bathroom is big - we suspect it was originally a small bedroom that got converted into a bathroom at some point - with two sinks a tub/shower with very good hot water and water pressure, and a toilet that's a bit tempermental. The downstairs bath has a sink and toilet, along with a great stacking washer/dryer combo that was a nice bonus. Reliable, fast WI-FI Internet connectivity and excellent TVs throughout the house (living room and both BRs). All in all, a very good experience. We'd rent this house again.

House was just as advertised. We enjoyed our 4 night stay there. The beds were very comfortable. Plenty of room towels blankets quilts. Nice backyard, my sons dog loved laying on small deck. Would stay there again. Did have little trouble with toilets flushing. The house was very pleasant, and very clean. And the Bart station was so close. Parking was $1:00 day there. Thanks debbie
