Beware-A Problem Property
Submitted: February 14, 2013

My wife and I,impressed by the description, review and services on offer rented for a week .We were misled
The "Holiday-Villa"-theme family-is nothing more than a series of separate small ground floor rooms(300 m. is the area of the compound) off a verandah and consists of a lounge with bedroom attached;a bathroom off this;2 further small separate bedrooms(1 was OCCUPIED though we had technically rented it);an outside toilet-no hand basin- and an outside shower.Photos lie.The rooms are badly lit making reading at night very difficult..
THE KITCHEN-not photographed-was dingy, the sink badly stained-was NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.Wanting only to make hot drinks and to prepare a simple breakfast we had to ask for a kettle. We were told a jug of hot water could be left for us overnight! The only utensils were table knives, forks and spoons.Try cutting a melon with a blunt knife. Also, the kitchen was often left in a disgusting state(see 3 below). How the students cooked is a mystery .
NOTE.This is a SHARED PROPERTY as the owner and others live above(and in bedroom3).This caused many PROBLEMS.
1 Total lack of privacy at all times day and night.
2 Noise.Loud conversations outside the bedroom went on well past midnight. On one occasion a party went on ,in the garden,to 4 a,m.
3Meals, cooked upstairs and take-aways- were eaten in the garden in the evening but DIRTY plates and UNEATEN FOOD were left in the downstairs RENTED kitchen and COMMUNAL(!)fridge.
4.Water.To shower with an uninterrupted flow of water, other residents had to be asked not to run the water elsewhere. We were told to shower at 8.pm.There is NO HOT WATER in the kitchen or bathroom washbasin.
5.SERVICES. Beware profiteering. You expect to pay a "premium" for certain services but check the price before accepting an airport pickup;a meal or an excursion. The prices charged or quoted to us were not the same as the charges advertised.
The house is secure, the garden pretty(not for quiet enjoyment) and is suitable for students/backpackers used to very basic, shared dormitory style facilities but it is NOT A FAMILY"VILLA" conducive to a pleasant stay.We have rented in Morocco,S.Africa,Botswana and Zimbabwe. Our stay was not typical of African or Senegalese hospitality we enjoyed elsewhere.
.
Our experience was summed up at 1.30 am on the morning of our departure.I asked if the noise could be kept down. The owner shouted back"That is YOUR PROBLEM,this is MY HOUSE",You would be unwise to share it.
Peter.
Owner's Response: I am very sorry to hear that mr Peter did not enjoy his stay in Pikine. I like to give my feed back on what he mentioned.
First of all Senegal is a very expensive country, not to compare with other African countries. For the price of the house (50 euros a night), one cannot expect a very luxurious accomodation. Then it is better go to stay in a hotel, where you pay four times as much. A friend of us stayed in a very simple 3 star hotel in senegal, which even did not have warm showers.
The traditional compound villa is indeed 300 sq. meters (we have this on paper) , but, of course, we include the ground floor of the house.
In general it is not a shared accomodation. The owner of the house is there only one month a year. We decide indeed that it is better not to rent the house any more when the owner is there, so noise at night will not happen any more.
It is always very clean and hygienic in the house. The housemaid is always busy cleaning everything.
For the food, there was fruit but also drinks included.
The price of renting the jeep with driver is 25000 cfa a day. Of course without petrol. A daytrip will be around 40.000 cfa. Of course it is possible to do it cheaper with a taxi, for 25000 including petrol. But for a luxury 4 wheel (open) car with a SAFE driver, a car that does not fall apart half way through, of course it is more expensive.
We are happy to have had also very enthousiastic visitors in the house, which can be seen by the other reviews.
Sincerely,
Monique Margry
