About Michael O'Malley

I am a Chicagoan who came to Sarajevo in 2001 to work with ABA/CEELI for one year. Visited Dubrovnik that first summer and decided that this was the place I wanted to live. Bought my place in 2003 and built the additional apartments in 2008. Have traveled widely and also spend a fair amount of time in Ireland.

I enjoy cooking, swimming, hiking, music and interesting conversations over some good wine or home-made cordials.

Michael O'Malley purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Michael O'Malley chose Dubrovnik Old Town

had not really heard much about Dubrovnik before first visiting in 2001 - mys first summer in Sarajevo. Walked into the Old Town and my jaw dropped. After a couple of years of visiting Dubrovnik, I decided I would rather live near the Old Town than in it. I believe I made the right decision.

What makes this apartment unique

Great place to kick back and relax. I never tire of the views of the sea. Changes every day. Birds sing night and day. Only one neighbor to the south of me and they only come occasionally. Olive groves to the south and Italian Cyprus behind me. A two minute walk to the sea - great way to start the day with a swim; or walk up into the hills behind me for a more strenuous form of exercise. Two first-rate restaurants within walking distance - 20- 25 minutes away along the coast. Elefiti islands are quite nearby.Bus stop just across the street will take you to the Old Town. Also available is a boat which will carry you to the Old Town.

Amazing View and Wonderful Host!

  • 5 of 5

Apartments Villa Rosa is a lovely house with private apartments located just 10 minutes from Old Town. The views are just amazing and you can walk across the road for a swim in the sea. We used the market right next door and to make many meals in our little kitchen. The property has lush vegetation--grapes, lemons, cactus. The bus stop is right near the house so it is very easy to get around if you do not have a car. Mike is the most gracious host--introducing us to the local wine, suggesting day trips, giving us restaurant recommendations. Highly recommended place to stay!

DUBROVNIK/ZATON BAY AND SO MUCH MORE

  • 5 of 5

After almost three weeks of hectic travel, we welcomed a totally new experience at Villa

Rosa. There are many reasons to visit Zaton and Dubrovnik and we will add staying at the Villa with owner, Michael as a highlight.

The region around Dubrovnik is very accessible to travelers with a major airport, excellent highways, and near to several countries. The city has breathtaking views, incredible restaurants, and a historical vibe that absorbs each visitor. Walking the walls in the Old Town area is unforgettable. Visiting nearby cities was very enlightening given the struggles that were part of their past.

The apartments at the Villa are spacious, extremely clean, and fully equipped for those who prefer preparing their own meals. A nearby grocery store is a gem. The views from The Villa are enchanting any time of the day. A lounge chair on the deck with a beverage of choice is a fond memory.

Michael is the man who puts a stay at the Villa over the top. He is an American with a lifetime of international experiences, he is multilingual, and dedicated to his clients. He is available to cook, give tours, and has an extensive knowledge of entertainment venues and the history of the entire region. A tour with Michael took us to special areas that still make us smile.

If you are looking for a new location to visit and a calm and peaceful environment, a trip to Villa Rosa is a great option.

Peaceful respite and beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Michael's house after 20 hours of travel and he greeted us with wine, cheese and crackers. In the first 30 minutes of chatting with Michael, we had a kayaking trip planned and accommodation secured in Sarajevo. Michael is a wealth of information and his house is absolutely true to its description with a gorgeous view of the bay. We were able to swim in the bay each morning and we had access to a small market, delicious restaurants, and ample parking for our vehicle. We made this our base for four nights as we visited Dubrovnik and Montenegro. We will definitely return to this part of the world again and I will gladly look up Michael as he now feels like an old friend.

Fantastic Stay in Mali Zaton

  • 5 of 5

This spot is everything that was described to us and more. It is a short (beautiful) drive from the airport and when you arrive and go up to your apartment and look out onto your balcony you will not believe your good fortune. The view is pretty much exactly as shown above. The apartments (there are two) are modern, private, super clean and roomy.

It seems as if you can get almost as much or as little assistance from the owner (Michael) as you want. We chose a lot of help. Michael is an American, a world traveler and a super interesting guy. He drove us to Dubrovnik (stunning) where we were on our own for a day. The place has everything, great vistas, food, history and friendly people.

Mike drove us up to Mostar and provided us with the fascinating and dramatic recent history of the place. This is not to be missed. Mike cooked for us one night ( excellent and fun) and recommended a wonderful seafood place on the water nearby for another night.

All in all, it was a terrific way to see Dubrovnik, close up but have a quiet getaway at the same time. Mike was an excellent host. We highly recommend the Villa Rosa experience.

Owner's Response: Jim and Sherry, Thanks for the great review. You were great guests and it was fun hanging out with you. Maybe you will return. I still talk about the epic rain storm we got soaked in.

Relaxing get away

  • 5 of 5

There are places you go that stick in your memory and remind you why you travel. This is Michael’s Home. During our six week travel of Europe, my two kids and I stayed here for six days. We went rafting (bought blow up rafts to the store that is located within a five year old walking limit) and went swimming and just walked around and explored the bay. A couple of the days we caught the bus into Durbrovnik, but then returned to our home later to use the internet for down loading music (13 year old) or playing games, watching movies or hanging out. The apartment has a balcony which gives you a beautiful view of the bay. If you do nothing else but sit and watch the water and the sky, it would be pretty good. If you like to cook, there is a full kitchen. If you like to buy fruit, veggies and ice-cream there is the store, or you can go to one of the restaurants in town or near the vacation home. There is plenty of space so nobody fights too much and the apartment is adequate to make everybody happy. Yet, the most important reason to come to this place is to hang out and talk with Michael and his guests. They are all equally interesting and make you feel a little like you probably should do more with your own life. Michael typifies the saying the “host with the most"; most gracious, charming, and wonderful. Really a lot of fun to be part of this world for awhile.

First-time visitors, Canada

Wow! Michael's twin apartments do have the sensational view of the bay of Mali Zaton that heads his VRBO site. But there's far more than meets the eye. Our host provided accurate directions from the airport to his location, and provided a personally-prepared gourmet dinner for four on the first night of our stay. Beyond that welcome, he provided many recommendations for enjoying the area, including the incredibly enjoyable "Fish Picnic" (What could that possibly be?), a kayak-bike day, recommendations for dinners at local restaurants, and more. Amenities dear to travelers included a wash machine, full kitchen, and small market right next door. We'd definitely return. Highly recommended!
