I am an art critic, curator and collector. Studied my Master's degree on Contemporary Art in London at Sotheby's Institute. Work in the art world, currently based in Mexico City
Vanesa Fernandez purchased this villa in 1970
I am mostly interested in beauty and historical values of really important art pieces and architecture, such as this property. The reason for renting it is because it is a holiday home, so it can be rented the resto of the time.
There is no other property like it in the country. It has been featured in Purple Magazine in France, Wallpaper Magazine in London, and Celeste Magazine in Mexico, amongst many other architecture books and magazines. The butler's salary is included in the rental price.
To echo an earlier reviewer, this is by far the most beautiful house I've ever stayed in. I felt glamorous just being there! Everything is five-star here: the architecture, the pool, the staff-- don't miss out on massages, pedicures, and the best chilaquiles ever!
I went with my family to La Canada and we had a blast. There is no better setting in the vicinity of Acapulco to enjoy such classic beach spot. This is a beautiful open house; the main space is all wide open and still completely isolated from any neighbour. Perched on a risk, the house is full of history and full of fine and comfortable local design furniture. Guests are taken care by Ricardo in a magnificent way, fresh coconuts and beer at hand. This is a place to quit the noisy Acapulco bay and to enjoy solely the best part of it. I would comeback anytime without hesitation. And Vanessa is a fantastic host to deal with!
Without exaggerating, I'd say that this is the most beautiful house I've ever had the fortune to stay in. The infinity pool at the cliff's edge and the original furniture, (even the rugs have been preserved!) jettison you back to luxurious 1940s Acapulco, when the stars all sought refuge and some peace and quiet in this part of the world... The indoor/outdoor main living and dining areas are beautiful - you can read in a a hammock or have a formal meal in rain or shine and still have the sensation of being outdoors, listening to the waves. We had a masseuse come in who set up her table down on the lowest deck so that we could be outside and close to the ocean while still completely private. We did a day sailing trip from the harbour in Acapulco and also a day trip down to Pie de la Cuesta (about 20 minutes away) where we ate fish at a tiny puesto on the beach and took a boat to 'mud island' where we had mud treatments (while drinkng fresh coconut water!) ... We also headed down to the newly restored Boca Chica, a stunning art deco hotel at the edge of Acapulco, for cocktails. But mostly we stayed at the house, relaxing, reading and eating the divine ceviches (I think we had four or five different types) that the cook prepared daily. The kidshad a blast - this was a realhome away from home. Vanesa had everything perfectly organized for us and couldn't have been nicer. Our arrival and stay went off smoothly. This secluded spot is truly heavenly, We can't wait to return.
The most delicious place to escape ever! Secluded and peaceful, with a view to die for. The house is incredibly clean and well-designed, while poolside cocktails are so sensational that you will never feel the need to leave the house. I stayed here for my 40th birthday and it was every bit as memorable as I hoped it would be.
Our family stayed twice now at Villa La Cañada and had a marvelous time. It is like a trip to the golden age of Acapulco in the 1940's. It is an amazing example of Mexican Modern vernacular architecture with a great open spaces and amazing views for the family to spend the whole day. Wonderful service provided by Ricardo the butler. On both times we came with another family and enjoyed our vacation immensely. It is private and secluded but also close driving distance to the old Acapulco center and yatch club. Surrounded by lush vegetation, stone floors, simple but classy decoration from 40s designer clara porset and spratling. Great for art and architecture sensitive people.
The beauty and story of the house
The house belonged to dolores del rio, the mexican hollywood actress that left her acting carreer to become the partner of orson wells. She was with him when he filmed citizen cane. It is an historic house, the first modern architectural work in mexico, built in acapulco in 1945, by renowned mexican architect enrique del moral (best known for his unam building, universidad autonoma de méxico). 'el gringo' del moral, as he was called, was very influential mostly in the way he incorporated vernacular architecture into modern buildings. So nature: the rainforest and ocean around, are beautifully incorportated into the house architecture in its terraces. As this house is considered one of his matespieces, the house is featured in most books on mexican architecture, as well as contemporary international magazines such as wallpaper, purple magazine and celeste magazines, amongst others.
What the house offers:

Unparalleled attraction: location
The house is the only building in a penninsula, so it is almost like living in an island of your own. But it is wonderfully located in the original 1940s residential acapulco area where, for instance, the elvis presley films were made. It is conveniently right between the bay of acapulco and pie de la cuesta only 10 to 15 minutes drive to either beach.
1) acapulco bay: offers all kinds of sea related attractions such as skiing, fishing, and diving, that can be booked from the house. It also offers very good restaurants, famous bars and fantastic nightlife.
2) pie de la cuesta: is more relaxed from heavy tourism, yet very pintoresque. It is pet friendly, has very little tourists, and few hotels. Pie de la cuesta offers an enormous sandy beach with waves for surfers, as well as a lagoon. You can water ski at the lagoon and have wonderful food in the small design hotels owned by europeans mostly.
3) transportation: there is an air conditioned van for 12 people available in the house with a driver. The tariffs for rides in the van run from 10 usd to 80 usd depending on the distance. pick up from airport is 50 usd.
