The outdoor shower works well in cleaning up our canine guests should they get a little dirty! Our canine guest rate is $22.00 a night, per guest.

*Note: We love our canine guests. If our canine guests like to relax in the house, it is their owner's responsibility to be sure the canine guests do not go into the sleeping area, that throw rugs are removed, and upholstered furniture is covered with sheets provided. We hope taking these precautions will minimize the amount of hair and dander that will need to be cleaned. If there is excessive cleaning as a result of our canine guests, the owner may be charged for the additional cost.

About Sandy Hightower

I chose a vacation rental business after 30 year career because of the opportunities it offers to meet some really interesting people and offer them a great place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle.

Sandy Hightower purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Sandy Hightower chose Smithville

The Treehouse Vacation Cabin is located on the Colorado River a short drive from Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. It is rare to find such a wonderful piece of waterfront property that is so centrally located.

What makes this cabin unique

We fell in love with the property when we saw the park at the water's edge, the birds (including Bald Eagles), the deer, and wildlife. The stone fireplace is very romantic. The deck below allows for gatherings of family and friends. The Colorado River offers bass and catfish galore!

Guestbook comments from the owner

One anniversary, a birthday, and Mother's day later and we're heading home! The place is beautiful and the area around it just as much so! Thank you for sharing this awesome place and for letting us stay here for the weekend!

PS. Stay out past dark, the lightning bugs are the coolest!

Great place to enjoy the outdoors, great access point into Colorado River for kayaking and paddle boarding. The house was very clean and well kept. We enjoyed the solitude & nature. Owner was very responsive to all questions. Will be back for another long weekend.

We could not have been happier with the Tree House in Smithville. It's very cozy and well maintained. The deck was awesome. The river was beautiful. It is secluded and peaceful but still close to town. Its a great place for nature lovers. Smithville is a charming, friendly town. We will be back!

Wonderful & relaxing stay at a peaceful property

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful stay at The Treehouse! I am now refreshed and ready to charge into next week! If you are looking for a quiet place to stay in the country, away from all the buzz of the big city, check out the Treehouse! We had such a good time. My favorite part was just sitting out on the upper deck in the morning with a cup of coffee and watching/listening to the birds as they chirped and sang in the treetops in the soft light of the sunrise.

The owners obviously go to great lengths to make their guests have everything they need for a fun and relaxing stay. They have stacked wood (free!) to use for the fireplace and for the outdoor firepit. There are box games and puzzles for kids and adults to play, a trail to the river to exploration, BBQ grill area, swinging chair and even provided the items to make S’mores for around a campfire! They have maps, suggestions, and points of interest listed on the table for the guests. What they don’t provide, Mother Nature does in peacefulness and natural beauty.

Did I mention that the Treehouse is pet friendly! Our family dog was able to enjoy everything with us! Just like at home, we covered the sofa & chairs at night to keep it “fur-less” for the next guest ‘cause our doggy likes to sleep on the sofa! The owners even provided a little doggy doorway gate to keep our 4-legged family member out of the bedroom (because she probably would have seen that as an opportunity to jump in bed with us, even though she is not allowed to at home!) It is great to have such a nice place to stay that allowed our dog too!

I hope to come back in the spring some weekend with my girlfriends to have a girls weekend away for some relaxation, shopping the antique stores in Smithville and maybe just sipping some wine on the deck with our feet propped up! Thank you for a great time!

When I first arrived to the cabin, it was too dark to really take in the area too well. Once morning arrived, we fell in love. Everything was extremely well laid out and clean. It's obvious that the owners of the property take really good care of it. We did get a lot of rain the day we were there so it made for a bit of messy morning but with all of the games and movies they keep in the cabin, we did just fine. There were 5 adults, 5 children ages 6-14 and 2 dogs and the cabin never once felt cramped. We will be returning again and I would highly recommend this property to anyone to once to enjoy a weekend away from the busy city. Thanks again for the 2nd to none hospitality. See you soon!

Owner's Response: Steve-Thank you very much for the kind words! We really appreciate you and your family visiting The Treehouse. I think you need to post your "Catch of the Day" picture online... pretty cool!. Please tell your daughter that we'll be ready for her to come to her second home soon. Check us out in January and February, we often run rate specials. I think Treehouse is great in the colder months. Cozy up to the fireplace, hike the property, and fish on the river. Looking forward to having you back to visit soon.

We were so happy to have found this little jewel. Sandy is so kind and considerate.

My Family and I had such a great time here. There was so much to do, thanks to the great info Sandy left for us. We will definitely be returning to this wonderful place among the tree's. Thank you Sandy, for all the little touches you have done to make this tree house such a warm and charming place. Remember to keep the light on for us because we will be coming back.

God Bless,

Laura and Family.

Our trip to the treehouse was months in the making. We were looking for the perfect weekend getaway that was not too far from home but far enough to get away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. After reading the owner's website, we knew this would be the perfect place. The owner advertises the home as having easy access to the Colorado river. This was not the case. There was no access to the river. To get to the river, you have to go down a steep muddy hill that is behind the home. Once you get to the bottom of the hill, you can see the raging and muddy Colorado river, however to get to the river you have to go through poison ivy, dense vegetation and muddy ground. This was not our idea of an accessible river that you could "dip your toes in" as the owner stated on her website. She advertises that the river is great for water sports but when you get to the home, she has signs that say the river is dangerous because of poison ivy and snakes. Owner needs to make up her mind! Is it safe or not safe? The home is described as being privately situated on 6 acres. While the home may be on six acres it is still within eye sight of the main road. When you are outside you can see and hear the cars driving by. Not too private! In addition, there are a lot of bugs out there so don’t even think about turning on any of the deck lights at night or you will be covered in insects as the owner does not have bug lights installed. Also, there is very limited wood on site. Be sure to bring your own wood if plan on using the fire pit or fireplace.

The real deal breaker for us came after our return from our stay. The owner sent an email referencing the exact time that she saw us and an accusation that she saw additional guests there. She wanted to confirm so that she could charge us for the extra visitors. We did not have any additional guests and the thought that she was spying on us was very unsettling. We left the property earlier than we had anticipated, so there was no need for the owner to be near the property when we left. Unless you like being spied on while on your getaway, stay away from this place as you will be watched by the creepy owner!

Owner's Response: We make an effort to provide a very clean, safe & enjoyable location for our guests. From the comments you left in the guest book after your stay, I believe you agreed: “Perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway. The cabin is such a comfortable place...all the comforts of home with the beauty of nature at your doorstep. Thanks for a wonderful time” Regarding your comment about “spying”: My husband & I were coming over to thank you for your visit, but when we saw the extra guests, we decided not to bother you. We consider the location private as we do not allow others on the property; the house is set 300 yds from the road lined with heavy foliage & the house has trees & brush on 3 sides. To see the house, one would have to enter the driveway. In regard to the river access, there is a gravel road that takes you down to river level. There was a map to this road on the kitchen table. I'm sorry that you took a deer/animal path behind the house down through the brushy area to the water. I am sure that would have been unpleasant. We have no control over the river or its banks. The river does not maintain a constant level & can flood, almost up to the level of the house. So use of the river is not always possible and is definitely not always safe! In May, we had more rain than in the last 5 yrs so the river was high & muddy. I'm sorry that you thought we had control over the river & could keep it from being “muddy” & brush free. The Treehouse is in the country & by the river. Along with the best of nature, there is the potential for bugs, snakes, and poison ivy. If our guests are not familiar with rural river areas, we advise of the potential so they can be cautious around the river. However, the acreage around the house is well maintained, to minimize potential contact. All year, we stack wood outside for use in firepit &BBQ. In the winter months, we stack wood for the inside fireplace. With temps in the 80's, we would not have put wood out for indoor use. We pride ourselves in providing wood for our guests at no extra charge. If you had wanted more wood, you should have given us a call. Re: “bugs” on the deck. We have used “bug lights” in the past & they work in keeping moths away, but tend to attract mosquitoes, which would be a bigger problem. Our guests often invite others to join them, are advised this is OK & we can settle up later. We appreciate it when our guests let us know about extra guests.

Many of our guests consider The Treehouse as 'their own' vacation home. They arrive, knowing that the house and grounds will be ready for them. They only need to bring their food and personal items. Our guests comment about how The Treehouse is so clean, organized and provides much more than they expected. Our canine guests love The Treehouse. The upper deck is fenced and gated, which allows our canine guests to be outside and their owners don't worry about them running off. We have extra sheets to cover the furniture if our canine guests like to lounge. If our canine guests should get a little dirty, the outdoor shower with hot/cold water helps to clean them up. Should you like to have others join you, The Treehouse has RV connections. Although The Treehouse is private, it is also a great place for family reunions, corporate getaways, and weddings.
