Kehena House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 2 - 4

Kehena Makai is like a pearl among Kehena properties. It sits right on the lava rock ledge where the waves splash on them every moment, you can feel the spray! The owners had this house completely remodeled and everything is new as of June 2007. It's so much nicer to vacation in a brand new home, let alone the superb ocean front setting. There's nothing between you and the ocean, just feel the nice tropical warmth. The blue Pacific ocean is 180 degree wide open in front of you! During the day you might spot whales and dolphins. At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get your to sweet dreams. The only house closer to the water is Kapoho Makai, our other rental property in Vacationland, where the whole yard is under water during high tides.

Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan and bamboo. Both bedrooms are master oceanfront with views along two walls. The woven bamboo ceiling adds to the tropical ambiance.

The house is built in the traditional sugar cane shack style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze. We have had many repeated guests since we started the rental.

About Susanna Billings

Ocean front location, plus a well decorated and comfortably furnished interior are what we are up to. We own Daylight Home, Lighting and Patio, a home furnishing retail store in San Luis Obispo, CA. John also likes to participate in building homes; Susanna helps him with the business and loves to communicate with people who are interested in renting our lovely homes, and likes to decorate the interiors and cooks. So it works out just perfect. We love travel, love meeting people, entertaining friends, Hawaii the Big Island is one of our most favorite destinations in the world. We love the air, the sky, the rain, the ocean, the fish, the people, the plants, the flowers, the animals, the lava, the passion. We feel that we are the kane and wahine when we are on the island or when we miss the island. Our license plates are 2kapoho and 2kehena!

Susanna Billings purchased this house in 2006

Why Susanna Billings chose Kehena

John came to the Big Island in the 80s and his love for it has grown all these years. We purchased this home Kehena Makai in 2006 to further fulfill our Hawaiian dreams. John's been working a lot on this house to make sure it has the best offering a higher end vacation rental home could be, so more people could experience the unique and true Hawaiiana of this part of the island. We love white sandy beach and luxury resorts too, but we love the original Hwaiiana more! If you like to snorkel in one of the best reserved marine conservations in the world, there's the Kapoho Waiopai tide pools; if you like to see Pele there's the only live volcano which flows into the ocean, amazing fireworks drop into the ocean with sky high steam it's just breathtaking; if you like to drive along the uncultivated coast line you can do it along one the most beautiful drives in the world - the red road with tree canopy on top of your head; if you like to see traditional and historical hula cultures there's the Merry Monarch Festival every April at Easter Time; if you like to surf with the local boys and girls, come on over; if you like to see the best tropical botanic garden, come on over...this is Puna, the real Hawaii.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Even the rainy days are fantastic at this side of the island - so much to do and see! We spent days chasing down the best ice coffee - from the food truck at the park just north of Pahoa.

It's hard to pin point our faves:

Mauna Kea Observatory

Wai'opae tidal pools and hot pod

hike to Shipman Beach, great!

And this house! The sorndo, the sun, the air is like velvet.

Thank you, mahalo for your hospitality!

The Perfect Place to get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5
Everything we hoped for was here. The House was big and fully stocked. The sound of the waves crashing against the Rocks was so relaxing. The Sunrise in the mornings were breath taking. We will come back. The locals are very nice and just down the road was a market where you could get some great fresh Fruit.
We truly enjoyed our stay and I am sure you will too.

Lovely spot overlooking the sea

My daughter and I really, really enjoyed our stay here. We were looking for a quiet place away from the regular tourist haunts where we could relax and from which we could explore.

The place was one of the best outfitted and decorated stays I've experienced. Really top notch. We loved the location as we sat for hours on the verandah looking directly at the breaking surf.

Location: The nearest beach is a 5-minute walk. Be aware it is clothing optional and somewhat counter-culture but the waves are quite amazing. The nearest corner store is a 5-minute drive away, but a real shop or restaurant is about a 20-minute drive.

Anyone staying here should be aware of a few things however. Wouldn't stop me from staying there, but just in case...
* the ocean surf is 24x7 (of course). If that level of noise bothers you, it might be an issue.
* there are plenty of noisy critters at night. The coqui frogs are incredibly loud, but we found them charming... almost sounds like they're asking a question "Ko-ki?"
* internet speed and reliability is not great. I imagine network access on a corner of an island is challenging. If you expect to steadily stream Netflix or some other service, you might get frustrated.

I would definitely visit again and would recommend this place to friends.

Wonderful Hawai'ian vacation!

Wonderful Hawai'ian vacation!

We had a spectacular time on the Big Island and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. It was gorgeous, serene, and felt quite private even though it's in a neighborhood. The home is located in/near the rainforest portion of the island, which I just loved. The home was clean, well stocked, and perfectly met our needs. We arrived on the island early in the day and Susanna was gracious enough to allow us to drop our luggage off earlier than check-in time while we explored the island. The lanai is magnificent allowing for wonderfully relaxing evenings and mornings. I would highly recommend this property. We can't wait until we can return and would definitely rent this property again. We explored nearly the whole island during our stay and absolutely loved the location of this house. While it isn't convenient, it was well worth the drive for the location. And if you rent this home you definitely have to drive the Red Road. Most beautiful drive ever.

LOVELY!

Our stay was all we might wish for. The house was well equipped and in good working order. Our only regret was that we only had three nights.

Even Better than I expected!

  • 5 of 5
If you are like me, you have looked at 100 rentals trying to find just the right one for your Hawaiian vacation. And now you have happened upon this one. Trust me...Pick this one. I had never been to Hawaii and had never done a vacation rental house. I wanted to spend a week totally unplugged from work and soaking in the Hawaiian vibe. I could not have chosen a better place. I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole rental process, but Susanna and John promptly and politely replied to all of my questions. Soon I had booked it and was counting the days. We flew into Hilo and drove to Kehena Makai. The directions provided were perfect. I walked into the house and could not believe that it was even better than the pictures. Completely comfortable, fully stocked, and the view from the lanai...unbelievable. The house was immaculate, and we enjoyed the beds that faced out onto the water so that we could see every sunset. You can absolutely feel the spray from the ocean on the lanai and we were sucked out onto the porch for many hours reading to the sound of the pounding surf or just watching it roll in and out, mesmerized. While you have the feeling of complete relaxing isolation, there is a small community surrounding the house that is fun to walk around. Also, at the house, a large flat screen TV with DirecTV, a great wi-fi connection, and a land line phone keep you connected, if you so desire. A fully stocked kitchen let us cook most nights and a new washer and dryer let us wash clothes when we needed to. There is a front porch with a grill and a table, but we were so taken by the ocean, we never sat there. A great secluded black sand beach is about 1/2 mile east. About 3 miles west is the small community of Kalapana, which has a fabulous cafe, a coffee shop, and a small market with great prices on essentials (even better than what we paid at Safeway in Hilo). We shared a table with locals at the cafe and learned some of the history of the area. Don't miss crossing the street from the cafe and taking a walk out across the lava field to another more expansive black sand beach. Scenic drives are close as are other great restaurants (try Kaleo's in Pahoa). Volcano NP is just one hour away (although we missed it because of the government shut down). Hilo has all the necessities you need, but take it from me...once you get to this magical place, you will not want to leave.

Owner's Response: I dreamed of whales last night, I missed my Hawaii, it's been a while. But this morning I woke up with this notice from Homeaway of this nice article (I'd rather call it an article than a review, well written Wendy)! This is "da kine" review we'd love to have, thank you, thank you and thank you! We're also glad to know that you had a good time and enjoyed our home - that's very important for a vacation and that's the reason why we turned our house into a vacation rental home, so more people could enjoy the beautiful part of Hawaii, since this area is so unique among all the Hawaiian islands. You could have the lush resorts on the white sandy beach everywhere but you could not see the beautiful and unique Puna district, the Black Sand beach, Uncle Robert's night market (think of Hawaiiana far beyond of a market), the Volcano National Park, the Wai'Opae tide pools, the people, the spirit and the energy etc, etc. Come and experience all these then you can tell your friends and families that "I've been to Hawaii!", while of course you will have to find the right home to stay to enjoy.
Aloha to Wendy, and to all!

Nice and quite, except for the roar of the ocean

  • 4 of 5
Stayed at this house for two days with the main goal of seeing the volcano. Was a great location, close to Hilo and Volcano national park. Also checked out the "new" black sand beach near Kalapana. House was fine, but starting to show some wear (sliding doors were tough to open, and only one had a screen). Also couldn't figure out how to work the overhead fan in the main room. Ceiling fans in the bedrooms worked and that's what was really important. Definitely had a family vacation house vibe.

We are on our own private lava ledge of the Pacific ocean, perched 15 above the water. No ocean access, but what a setting. On top of all Kehena, we're a short walk to the Black Sand beach, ten miles to Kapoho Vacationland and the famous Waiopae Tidepool Preserve and the Hot Pond and Champagne Pond along the beautiful Red Road, near Kaimu, Kalapana and Opihikao.
