Upper Court is simply heaven for a self-catering stay, or indeed a fully catered-for stay. Relax into the wonderful, spacious and warm surroundings of this beautiful and comfortably spacious Country House, sitting perfectly on its landscaped grounds just outside the village of Freshford, Co Kilkenny. Upper Court is a 10-minute drive from Kilkenny City; 30 minutes from excellent heritage sites and places of great historic interest; and just 1.5 hours to Dublin City Centre.
Accommodation: 7 king size bedrooms sleeping 14+ guests (sharing), and these are stylish, unique, authentic bedrooms to choose from - one more lovely than the other. Two bedrooms offer deeply comfortable 4-poster beds; and all others an option on California Kings, Queen beds, or Single Divans. And! three bedrooms are so large they can have 5 to 6 queen beds in each, accommodating overall some 24+ guests (sharing) at any one time.
In the adjoining Church Lodge, there are a further 12 double size bedrooms available; and in the Estate Cottage - a further 3 double bedrooms are available. Altogether Upper Court can accommodate group sizes of 20 to 44+ guests, sharing. All bedrooms are delightful spaces with our special linens, unique touches, fresh flowers, simple antiques and calm interiors. Using only 100% cotton & linen fabrics, and anti-allergenic fabrics when this is requested, beds are fully made up prior to your arrival, and everything made perfectly ready for your stay. A plentiful supply of fresh towels - bath sheets, bath-, hand- & face towels, and toiletries provided in all bathrooms awaits you. You will arrive into a well-run, warm, beautiful and welcoming environment - a great start to a wonderful self-catering or catered for time in Kilkenny, and Ireland.
Bathrooms & Showers - there are 7 WC/Toilets / Bathrooms &/or Shower Rooms throughout. Due to the nature of the Manor House, not all bedrooms can be en-suite just yet, however, we have achieved this for four bedrooms, one of which offers you a delightful free-standing Victorian slipper bathtub, and another is a fabulous & large, contemporary Rain Showers bathroom.
Down below! - is the warm and good-old-fashioned traditional Irish Kitchen which lies deep at the heart of the house, fully equipped with all mod cons, cooking & catering equipment, and is a lovely space to gather together in. There is a traditional Breakfast Room adjoining this, and a large Dining / Banquet Room adjoining this again - through the lovely old stone archways. All bedded underfoot by wonderful stone floors and polished limestone slabs, which also keep the wine & cheese stores, old pantries, food larders and cold store rooms perfectly cool.
Upstairs are beautiful, spacious and deeply comfortable Sitting Rooms, Library & Music Rooms - with tall sash windows always streaming bright garden light through, and one set allowing you walk out onto the tranquil ornamental lawns and gardens - for evening cocktails! By afternoon or evening time, it is a pleasure to gather here, and wonderful for gathering together after Dinner to catch up on events of the day. If the weather is inclement, the stunning, large open-hearth fireplaces are lit for you to gather around - roaring fires ablaze glass of cognac to hand, gathered round the baby grand piano for storytelling or music making! A combination of central & under-floor heating throughout ensures you are always in perfect warm surroundings; and with broadband Wireless internet throughout the house, full Satellite / Cable TV, Music Room, Crafts Studio, iPod/iPhone docking & recharging stations – and our generous Welcome Basket of groceries to welcome you in, you literally have everything you need to enjoy a most wonderful holiday time in Ireland.
Rental price: for a self-catering stay it is euro55/- pppn at the Manor House; euro35/- pppn at the Church Lodge; and euro35/- pppn at the Estate Cottage. There is also a one-time preps fee at these options to prepare everything for your stay; and ample private parking is provided for your stay - directly outside the Manor House, or just outside the Church Lodge.

We offer an ideal mix of both - the traditional Irish kitchen downstairs is yours to enjoy all self-catering you need. Plus our fully equipped professional Kitchens located on the Ground Floor - just across from the beautiful formal Restaurant cum Dining Room, set aside uniquely for short-stay guest parties. Perfect for pre-arrange the food & beverage needs of your group, you can dine to a menu of our Country House breakfasts, lunches, and evening dinners, and your preferred wines & drinks. Our Food & Beverage people will be delighted to discuss menus and prices for these needs. Pre-arranging this, you can also greatly enjoy the freedom to prepare your own meals & snacks any time you like in the delightful heart-of-the-house traditional Irish kitchen downstairs.
The Church Lodge Residence has 12 Double size bedrooms to offer, sleeping 24+ guests, sharing. With its large Refectory / Dining Room, fully equipped contemporary Kitchen, Bathrooms & Showers, this is an excellent independent option to consider booking into if the Manor House is already reserved for your dates. Bedrooms in the side aisles of this de-commissioned church, leaving the spacious parquet-floored floor area and hall of the Church, raised stage area, 30ft white screen, pa system, and antique pulpit to one side - perfectly useable as a Seminars, Workshops, Concert & Singing, Dance & Theatre space, Cinema, Exhibition, or Gathering space – easily accommodating a choral group of ~50 on stage, and comfortably seating 100 to 250+ day guests at any time. The Church Lodge & Hall directly adjoin the Manor House via a long corridor, and although much newer than the Manor House in its construction & style, this too is a hugely special, peaceful and very attractive space in itself.
