Photos and Description of the Boone vacation barn rental
2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4), 4 stalls available

Blue Ridge Trail Riding Vacation with your own horses! Or, relaxing private vacation for a couple, a small family, or good friends. Living quarters are on one level that has only one step onto the deck (handicapped friendly, with a little help). Located on 16 mountain acres, Rolllin' N the Hay is the perfect equestrian set up: 4 riders enjoy the cypress sided two bedrooms and 4 horses enjoy the four box stalls below. Leatherwood Mountain Resort boasts 75+ miles of mountain horse trails that traverse directly through this 16 acre property. A captivating vacation: relaxing long soaks in the hot tub after a long trail ride, unobstructed mountain views from the raised deck chairs, brilliant star lit nights from the open deck (no light pollution here!); cherished moments await in the peace and solitude of this secluded mountain barn.

But don't let the horse facilities deter non-horsemen! Rollin' N the Hay is also a wonderful place for couples, small families, honeymooner's, anniversaries, or friends to get away from 'IT ALL'! Private, beautiful views, nature right outside the door, in the middle of wilderness, hiking trails, pool, tennis, fishing, and tubing are for everyone to enjoy.

Rollin N the Hay is located just off Tin Horn Road (1.8 miles from the Leatherwood Mountains security gate) and about 1/4 mile down graveled Flag Branch Road; while trailer parking is ample, the steep grade and tight turning requires a 'he-man' truck (not a wimpy truck or long rig)! Nightly board is $20 per horse, bring required shavings, hay and feed; a current health certificate from out of state horses and negative coggins for all horses is required to be shown at the Leatherwood Stables Office (closes at 5PM) in the Saddlebrook Restaurant Building at the entrance to Leatherwood. Rollin' N the Hay welcomes your other furry family members as well (pets up to 35 pounds) for a per pet fee of $50.

Rollin' N the Hay feels like stepping into an 'old shoe'. Warm cypress wood, stained glass panels, Frederick Remington cowboy prints, nature collections, your horses just below, and of course modern 'must haves' WiFi and digital television; who could ask for more to get away from the hustle and bustle of the 'real world'? Ask about partnering Rollin' N the Hay with the owner's close by log cabin, Hemlock Point and its two stall barn, to create a unique Equestrian compound for large groups of up to 10-12 guests and 6-8 horses (10% off rental rate for both homes on the same contract).

About Mary Helen Ellis

Love the quote by an unknown author: 'The Human Spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hand of man.' Scott and Mary Helen Ellis; we love the rural life! Our passions range from the oldest town in NC on the Pamlico River to the northern NC Blue Ridge Mountains. We love all things nature: woods, wildlife, Celtic music, boating, hiking, horseback riding, crafting, gardening...and all things old: antiques, genealogy, NC's oldest town, and old legends. Give us the views across rivers, oceans and mountains to the most sophisticated views across the grand cities of the world. We wonder at the remarkable beauty and elegance in a bevy of butterflies sunning on a rock in a bold mountain stream...as opposed to the brush strokes of someone hanging on a wall, lit by a bulb, in a stuffy building...Our fervent belief is that nothing mankind can do is ever on par with what our Creator did!

Mary Helen Ellis purchased this barn in 2007
Why Mary Helen Ellis chose Boone

Every year of our 28+ years of marriage, we have ventured to the NC mountains. In 1997 we made the leap of faith to purchase our property at Leatherwood Mountains Resort, appreciating the concept of stewardship in creating a human presence but maintaining the wilderness for all generations.

What makes this barn unique

Our Concept: seclusion, just you and your family/friends, your horses, the beautiful wilderness all around, the long range views of the glorious mountains, peace...

Property is exactly as described on the VRBO site. The apartment is welcoming, cozy and comfortable and the view was beautiful!!! We enjoyed riding down the mountain for lunch and never started the truck the whole weekend...no need to drive when you can ride a great horse on beautiful trails. America by Horseback was added bonus during our stay. A great combination of accomodations for the family and the horses. We'll be back!!

My son wanted us to spend a quiet Christmas together so we could relax and enjoy the peace and beauty of the mountains - and we did! We had a great time in this beautiful place - it was fun exploring the area and enjoying the hot tub in the evenings. There were 4 of us - me, my son, his girlfriend and my grandson who is 10 yrs. old. It was even more beautiful than the pictures! it was clean, cozy and welcoming. We cooked most of our meals there - the kitchen was so well stocked we did not need anything other than the food to cook to make our meals each day. The owner is delightful to talk to and more helpful than we could have asked for. The time there was a blessing! I would recommend this home to anyone, any age. We wanted to stay forever and we hope to go back again!!

Great weekend getaway!

We had a wonderful stay at this mountain cabin. We came up to visit our son who is in his first year at school in Boone. The beds were comfy, the shower was great, functional kitchen and excellent hot tub!

The view from the porch was wonderful and we loved the feel of the cabin. It was truly like getting away to a different part of the world.

We ate at the Leatherwood Resort restaurant and the food was pretty good and the people were great.

The owners were great leading up to our visit, offering helpful information and tips on their favorite apple orchard. They were more than gracious when I contacted them afterward about my daughter's lost cell phone!

I would highly recommend this as a mountain retreat.

We only had a short time here, but Rollin N the Hay is a beautiful home set in a beautiful place! There are lots of hiking, biking, and horse riding trails right outside the house. It's best for a secluded getaway, but Boone and Blowing Rock are less than an hour away for some more tourism options. Thanks for opening your home to us, we had a great time here!

From the moment we drove in the driveway of this beautiful property, we knew we'd chosen the "perfect" place for our weekend getaway! The accommodations were excellent, and there wasn't anything that we needed that this rental didn't have. The entire living area was very well decorated and had an eccletic flare that nicely complimented the property's uniqueness. The kitchen was great for "stay-at-home" dinners (we loved all the spices, cooking utensils, and serviceware!), the family room provided a comfy place for relaxing after the day's adventures, the deck was perfect for lounging and watching nature's majesty, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was spacious (great shower!), and the washer/dryer made it a breeze to have clean clothes for the next day's trail ride! The constant cool breezes kept the house cool (without using the AC) and it was wonderful to hear woodpeckers, other birds, etc! As for the "equine" living area -- all I can say is WOW!!! My horses did not want to leave!!! They thought they were celebrities in their HUGE matted (very clean) stalls, and they loved the post-ride outside "bath" area! The center of the barn offered plentiful space for tack, hay, and accessories, and our dogs loved "hanging out" with the horses at night! The ultimate for this horse lover was to walk down the steps and say "good morning" to my horses will still in my PJs!!! We had no need to "do" anything else or "go" anywhere else -- this place has everything for a "chillaxing" get-away. THANK YOU!! We WILL be back!
