Stay over July 4th week
We stayed over the week of July 4th, and overall were pleased with our stay. We really enjoyed the screened porch. It was nice to sit out there when our daughter was in bed. We had coffee outside in the morning too. We were able to see fireworks from the porch. For parents of kids who are too young (or too scared), it's a plus. Plus we didn't have to drive in awful traffic afterwards!
The living room and dining room furniture is fairly nice. The kitchen is spacious, though as a chef, I tend to bring a lot of cooking supplies, and there was not much room for my stuff. Also, the refrigerator and freezer were quite packed when we got there. I suspect some of this food may have been the owners', but some was probably other renters' food too. I cleared off a shelf for our stuff in both fridge and freezer, and we were fine, but I'm used to seeing an empty fridge at check-in! I suspect part of the reason there was so much food is because renters are to clean the house before leaving, and maybe they think they're being helpful by leaving a third or fourth mayo? Eventually you can see a crowding issue develop.
We have an almost 2 year old (18 months at the time), and she is quite adventurous. I imagine once she's older, this place would be great, but at her young age we had to put a lot of tchotchkes up to make sure she wouldn't damage them, and make sure that the front door was closed at all times. The house is on stilts (which we obviously knew), but underestimated our daughter's desire to get out and explore her new surroundings. We clearly didn't think about her explorative nature before renting (and 99% of beach houses would have been this way), so this review is not intended to be critical - just mainly a heads up for parents with small, "curious" kids.
Finally, we enjoyed the proximity to town. The house is kind of on a dead end street, so it's fairly quiet and the neighborhood seems family friendly. It didn't seem like a party area (at least when we were there). We were happy about that! We ate at several places (Village Market was really close & walkable, & pretty good).
The homeowner got back to us quickly throughout the stay. The non-master b'rooms were smallish. Generally, who cares, right? But with a crib, it was real tight. Again, we didn't think about this before we came. Overall, we recommend!
Owner's Response: Laura,
Thanks for the review and feedback. The issue with the refrigerator and freezer has been a challenge. Departing renters do feel like they are doing the new renter a favor by leaving items in both locations. I am now asking departing renters to remove all items from the refrigerator and freezer.
The cottage is a second home for me and is stocked and decorated as such. The complete stocking of the kitchen has proven to be very positive for most renters since they do not have to worry about packing those items. A majority of my renters are looking for fully stocked kitchens. I also deocrate, to make my cottage feel like a home as much as possible. I have no issues with families with small children removing those items that they would consider dangerous or easily broken. All in all my cottage will not be like the properties handled by rental companies.
