Not what we expected
We came down to Oak Island and planned to stay at Karen K. We arrived and the property was dirty, dog hair on every surface, paint chipping and peeling off exterior windows and doors, and the yard was littered with trash and cigarette butts, and there was a serious ant problem inside and outside the house. Pickets were missing from the front porch railing. The house also sits on one of the busiest corners of Oak Island, with continuous traffic throughout the day and night. We had small children with us, and the corner was frighteningly busy. In fact a moped and a car collided at that corner the week we were to stay there. Also, there is a very busy convenience store directly behind the house. I am sure this rental suits many types of people, but if you have small children, this may not be the one for you.
Owner's Response: We have been renting our Oak Island beach house through the same rental agent for the last 20 years without any problems or major complaints from renters. Also, with a little investigation (searching the internet), any renter can find out details about the house and its location.
This particular renter wanted the house for 3 weeks and they showed up with more children than what they had originally told us they would have. After staying in the house for 3 days, they called our rental agent with a list of complaints. They were extremely rude and belligerent to our agent. The agent was more than happy to correct any problems immediately, etc. but the renter would have no part of that and demanded another house. Our agent, who manages hundreds of homes, assured us that these renters only wanted to upgrade to another house and that she has seen people like these over the years.
We asked our agent to provide us a report on the complaints the renters made so we could fix these problems for future tenants. Our agent assured us that there was nothing to fix and the house was okay for future renters. The house was sprayed for ants just as a precaution.
Before these renters arrived, the house had consistently rented to various other VRBO clients and no complaints were received.
Fortunately for us, once these tenants left our house we were able to re-rent the house within 3 days.
