Welcome to a spectacular luxury home, nestled in a lush hillside garden with breathtaking views in America's 'hippest neighborhood', Silver Lake. This 3/4 acre property is a true piece of paradise, an oasis in the middle of this great city. The spacious house is bright and breezy and the grounds are a tiered garden of Eden filled with flowers and fruit trees and patios and decks and a spa, all featuring wonderful views of the lake and Hollywood Hills beyond (featuring the Hollywood sign and Griffith Park Observatory). The classic LA view!

The home is set way back off the street. It is multileveled and offers modern open plan living, with large windows everywhere displaying the spectacular views throughout. At either end of the house there are two master Bedroom suites with full bathrooms. One is nestled in the garden, a Utopian setting with a door leading directly into the lush greenery. The other has vaulted ceilings and a large picture window featuring that gorgeous view again, with a door leading out onto a large deck. It will be tough to decide which bedroom to enjoy first.

Originally the house was a classic California bungalow from the 1920’s. It has been tastefully expanded and updated with all of the luxuries of modern living. The living room features a wall of bi-folding glass doors which create a 16’ opening to a 500 sq. ft. deck, a spectacular perch form which to enjoy the dramatic sunsets across the lake.

The eat-in kitchen is state of the art, a real cook’s delight with everything you’ll need, brand new appliances and striking black granite countertops. It also feature a charming banquette, surrounded by windows, nestled in the garden and bathed in light from the three overhead skylights.

One of the master bedrooms has a bonus room for an office and dressing room and its bathroom features a whirlpool tub with garden view. But you’re probably not going to need it, the outdoor spa is just up the hillside in the back yard. It is situated high on a promontory with an expansive view framed by fruit trees and palms, a truly idyllic spot.

The unfortunate thing about this house is you are probably here to see Los Angeles, but you won’t want to leave the property.

Other amenities include a majestic stone fireplace in the living room, perfect for those cool winter evenings. There’s a gas grill on the front deck, wireless (or wired) internet, Garage parking, brand new LG washer and dryer with steam feature, a 65” Sony smart HDTV with Direct TV Genie with HBO/SHO and Starz, Netflix and Amazon Prime. And there are additional TV’s in the bedrooms. There is central A/C but you probably won’t need it as there are ceiling fans throughout and the house is airy and breezy. The furnishings are a mix of modern with some quality eclectic pieces, and a great collection of colored glass lamps. All designed by me, the owner, a design architect with great taste.

This home will give you an authentic flavor of life here in this special community. Silver Lake has been a magnet to creative people for decades. Artists, film makers, musicians and architects have been drawn to this almost bucolic setting, lush hillside homes around a lake in the middle of this huge and vital city. The house is in the absolute heart of this community, just 2 blocks from the lake with its popular jogging path and the beloved Silver Lake meadows, the core of this creative neighborhood. Mix with the local color, have a picnic on the lawns, enjoy a glass of wine, fly a kite, become a part of this dynamic community.

Wonderful shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, music venues, galleries and all the other attributes of an artistic enclave are abundant and easily accessible from the apartment, many by foot or a just a short drive. Just around the corner you you'll find a few of Silver Lake's trendiest spots, the Cha Cha Lounge, The Red Lion Tavern, Silver Lake Wine, Gingergrass, Silverlake Coffee, The Edendale Grill, Home restaurant... The list just begins.

Silver Lake has been an architect's playground for decades, many famous designers have experimented here, building what have become iconic examples of mid century modern designs. You will find many classic Neutras, Schindlers, Lautners, Ellwood, Ain, Lloyd Wrights, down the block and around the corners. My favorite is an exquisite Lloyd Wright around the corner, it was home to Anais Nin, where she wrote many of her trailblazing diaries. Many young architects are continuing in that tradition of experimental modernism and many new future icons continue to pop up all over the neighborhood.

Although you feel like you're in a hillside lake resort in the Italian countryside, the house is right near 4 of the city's main arteries, the 5, 101, 110, and the 2 freeways are minutes away. So the entire city is easily accessible from here. Head west on the 10 to the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice, or you can hop the 2 west to Pasadena and enjoy a day in old town and the gorgeous Huntington Gardens and Museum (Gainsborough's Blue Boy) and the astounding collection at the Norton Simon museum (many Van Goghs, and a Raphael). If you're here for work you can hop the 5 to Universal, Warner Brothers, Disney and Dreamworks, all a short 10 minute drive. Or take surface streets to the Paramount lot, a 10 minute drive. Downtown is even closer. Enjoy the LA Philharmonic at the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, an opera at the Dorothy Chandler, a play or musical at the Mark Taper or a concert at the Staples Center or Nokia Theatre at LA live. Hit MOMA, or LACMA. It's all nearby, Silver Lake really is the perfect central location to visit all of LA. And my place offers serene and functional comfort, a perfect home base for your visit.

Please note that cats live in the yard, they generally keep to themselves and they are not allowed in the house.

I am open to longer rentals as well and I will happily negotiate discounts for extended stays.

The house is registered for Transient Occupancy with the City of Los Angeles and thus I am required to charge (and pay to the city) a 14% Transient Occupancy Tax for all rentals under 30 days. If you stay longer than 30 days, we do not have to pay the tax.

About Jeffrey Schneider

Aloha form Tunnels beach, Kauai! (My other home). I have been a long term resident of Silver lake, over 20 years now. I'm originally from NY and spent my early adult life as a pioneer of the East Village in NYC going to NYU, then working as a set designer. I came out here and began to work with architects doing specialty design for many high end casinos and hotels in Las Vegas and around the world. I'm just another Silver Lake artist/hippy/eccentric doing my art and enjoying my gifted life.

When I gaze over the lake at the hills I feel like I'm in a resort in a European hill town. And yet this is probably the most vital metropolis in the US (after NY). To enjoy such serenity in the middle of such a large city is really special.

Great vacation

Fabulous view and garden

We stayed at this rental for 4 weeks in Jan. and Feb., and loved every minute of it. The house is as wonderful as it looks and the view is fantastic. The neighborhood is very nice and quiet. Stores, restaurants and the reservoir are within walking distance, if you don’t mind climbing hills. We liked the Red Lion and GingerGrass restaurants and both are quite close. The appliances are great, the TVs (3 of them) impressive, and the WiFi excellent. The garden area is well worth the stay in itself. It is beautifully laid out and well kept. Something was always blooming. The pictures don’t do it justice. The landlord was very helpful, and available if needed. We were able to use the outdoor hot tub several times and enjoyed it immensely. Our grandchildren stayed with us occasionally and loved the house and garden, especially the cats that roam the garden. (Just have to be careful not to let the cats escape). All-in-all, this a great place to stay. I would recommend it to anyone, and we hope to return next year.

We made this our Christmas home in L.A.

We live in Toronto Canada and spent many weeks in the Fall looking for a spot in a warm climate so we could whisk our adult children and grandson away for a Christmas holiday. We scoured the Florida rentals and just could not find a space that felt right for all ages. Then we found Jeffrey's L.A. home. It fit the bill and he immediately responded to our inquiry (not everyone is so prompt this way and some rental agents take far too long to get back to you), providing all the information we needed to make a decision. We have rented VRBOs before and were aware that often the photos don't tell the whole story. But when we arrived, we were immediately comfortable and impressed. We love to cook and the kitchen was perfect with table and banquette where our grandson did his coloring under a skylight. We wanted our kids have their separate space and the bedrooms were in separate parts of the home (Jeffrey recently installed extra privacy blinds in the bedroom area that is close to the living room). We needed to rent a car, and we do recommend having a car, and were provided with carport parking. But the really beautiful feature which sold us on this space when we originally saw the pictures was the living room that spills out onto an outdoor terrace; doors sliding all the way across to double our gathering and dining space. Overlooking the Hollywood Hills, and yes that iconic sign (which I read thay are planning to light up again - making this little feature all the more amazing!), we just loved this part of the house and spent almost all our time here together. The thing that meant a lot to us was that Jeffrey lived at the top of the hill; came by to welcome us and made us feel so at home, telling us to feel free to turn up the heat if we felt the least bit cold; bringing us extra bedding for our kid's room as well as a new bluetooth speaker so we could enjoy our music while there. He had self-inflating mattresses which was perfect for our grandson. He made sure he was available to us but left us to enjoy our privacy. Like many families that travel with children, we really did not want to have to worry about being in a fussy fragile space, stressing about kids just being kids in someone else's home. We just felt so comfortable in Jeffrey's home, this was never an issue. Three large tvs throughout meant that everyone had a space to enjoy their movies (this matters with a 6 yr old in the mix). We rented for 4 days - my husband and I and 3 adult children -

What we loved - the view, the hot tub, the amount of space, peaceful, easy highway access to everything, strong wifi, owner that was very easy to rent from and connect with, comfortable beds, nice to have 2 full baths

Somewhat disappointed - the property is very weathered, especially the outdoor living space - rusted chairs, really dirty cushions, aged wooden picnic table - I love spending time just sitting outside reading, etc but did not do that at all due to poorly maintained furnishings. The house smelled very musty. The 2nd bedroom has no wall or door, it is wide open to the living area which made it a challenge if someone tried to sleep-in and others were awake. The first bedroom is nice but the front entry door is in that room, which again caused a privacy challenge for our group of 5 - probably a non issue for 2-3 guests, though. Not enough blankets - a total of 3 blankets in the house - did reach out to Owner but no offer to bring more over, but did encourage us to turn up the heat, which we did. Lastly, there was rarely available street parking so we parked in the garage which is up a steep driveway - probably ok for Californians, but a little surprise for us from the Midwest (with a minivan rental). One oddity - there are several outdoor cats on the fenced in property, and signs throughout the house not to let the cats in. We are not cat lovers, so seeing them around a lot was odd, not problematic, just odd. If you like cats, however this would likely be a bonus for you.

The price, however was perfect for the area - there are other houses the same size but more expensive - this house suited us fine as we were out and about during the day and it was affordable for the size group we had.

Owner's Response: What can I say? You arrived at the end of 4 days of relentless rains, a rarity here in Southern California. Of course things were dank and the outdoor furniture was wet and uninviting. You use the moniker "unique" as a put down; to me that is its badge of honor. This is not a cookie cutter track house, it is a "unique" high end architect designed hillside gem, as supported by the 14 five-star reviews that proceeded yours. However I did follow through on your suggestion to provide a greater privacy option for the second bedroom with added shades. And I stocked the linen closet with additional blankets and linens. I would recommend going to your local pet rescue and adopting a cat. Your kids would love it and perhaps in the future you would find the sight of a cat less of an "oddity" :)

Sorry this is a little late in coming but just wanted to say your place was just perfect!! The only little problem was coming up the drive right at the edge where the drive widens overhead branch needs to be tied up a little if you have an SUV. Hits the roof of car. Otherwise a beautiful and perfect vacation rental! We just loved it. Thank you again and would return to you when we come again to beautiful LA !

Extraordinary House and Location!

Even the glowing descriptions from other reviewers don't do Jeffrey's house justice! The accommodations contained everything anyone could wish for: A clean, airy, and spacious abode, outfitted with top of the line appliances, great Wi-Fi connection, large TVs, and super comfortable bed. The amazing views, gorgeous flora, large deck, and fabulous location provided us with everything we could have wished for. Jeffrey was very friendly and accommodating, and always reachable if we had a question. We highly recommend this property. Silver Lake itself is now brimming with restaurants (Night Market Song, the L&E Oyster Bar, and Sqirl spring to mind) - and we can't wait to return.
