Clean water with great swimming & fishing for all ages.
Keywords: Kewadin/Birch Lake, Elk Rapids 3 Miles Traverse City 20 Miles)
Cottage with ease of accessibility for all. Room to roam. Perfect for birders, as there are many songbirds. Quiet & peaceful retreat from the busyness of daily life. Plenty of local activities to participate in.
Our stay at Birch Perch was very enjoyable, plenty of room for the family. Having a washer and dryer was a big plus in my book!
It would be nice to have a TV in the living room and a few more pots and fry pans for cooking, some better silverware and unbreakable dishes for people with younger children.
The owners are very nice and we are already looking forward to our stay again next year in Aug.
Thanks for sharing your cottage with us.
I happen to be looking on Verbo for a cozy cottage on a lake near my Aunt who lives in Elk Rapids and I came across this cottage. We just recently rented it over the 4th of July because there are so many wonderful things going on around town. We found the cottage to be cozy and comfortable. Was wonderful being able to swim in the clean lake and have dinner outside with no bugs! Was easy to have the kids sleep there and they had plenty of room. The cottage was clean when we got there and owners were delightful and answered any questions. A great quiet stop for any weary traveler!
Last year was my family's first cottage on the lake summer vacation. My wife and I have an 8 year old daughter and a 6 year old son who has special needs and is in a wheelchair. I looked and looked for a cottage that was wheelchair accessible, a true cottage (not one that is a "summer home" that is bigger and nicer than our actual house, and not too expensive to rent. Finally I came across Birch Perch. After talking with the owners (who are as nice as can be) it sounded like it was what we were looking for. It was even better than that. There are 2 ramps into the cottage, a full bath that is wheelchair accessible plus a 2nd full bath, and even the dock was built for a wheelchair and big enough to lounge on for all 4 of us. It even has steps down into the water. The cottage was clean and well kept. Plenty of everything we needed even firewood for campfires which we had every night. Birch Lake is perfect for little kids too. The lake is sandy and shallow a good ways out. There is a rowboat, plenty of vest life jackets, and paddle boards that we tried for the first time (which are a total blast). Our daughter played in the water most of the time and she even made a friend with the daughter of another family a few cottages down. We are coming back this year the same week that the other family is too. We had such a good time we cannot wait to go back. There is plenty to do in Elk Rapids and the surrounding area if that is your thing but we hung out at the cottage most of the week. Seriously consider this cottage if you want to relax, kick back, and have a great summer vacation.
Oue stay at Berch Perch was very nice. We loved the property. Lots of room for the family to enjoy
especially the fire pit. The axcess to the lake from the dock with my sons boat was perfact. and the\
paddle boards were enjoyed by all the family. The inside of the cottage was very nice except for
two things. It needs One regular sized refrigerator instead the three small ones, and it needs some
regular beds instead of the pull out couches. All in all we had a grand time and would love to return.
Here are my thoughts about the rental, after a recent stay.
Liked the owners, the sunrises and sunsets, and sitting on the dock looking at the stars.
Convenience of laundry facilities a big plus.
Appreciated the paddleboards that were included with rental, and the availability of coffee maker, hot air popcorn popper and electric griddle. Loved the convenience to Elk Rapids, US31, and numerous farmers markets.
Birch Lake is very shallow, with a sandy bottom. And lots of clam and zebra mussel shells. Water shoes are a must.
Queen size Beds (1) In master bedroom, Sleep Sofa or Futons (1) Two pull out sofas.
This may lead you to believe that you've a bed, a futon, and two pull out sofas. This is not accurate. You've a bed, and two ancient pull outs. anymore than six people, large or small, and you'll need air mattresses.
Kitchen is tiny, with virtually no counter space.
Kitchen table is also tiny. There was a STRONG unpleasant odor emanating from the rug under the table. There are three dormitory sized refrigerators in the rental, as opposed to one full size one.
Each had food in it when we arrived, and each really needed defrosted.
The limited cupboard space for dry goods was also very much in use already, when we arrived.
The large gas grill was a nice addition, but it was in desperate need of cleaning and gave off a strong odor of old grease when opened.
Numerous incidences of realizing that things were broken (bench on deck) or not far from it (mis-matched / cracked oars for rowboat, rusty chairs around firepit)
Overall, not a place to rent if you plan to spend the week with anyone besides yourselves and 2 or so small children. Also not a good rental choice if you hope to take advantage of the local produce and meat opportunities, and do a lot of cooking.
Not a bad place to stay, but not a very good one, either.
Could use updating, a good cleaning, and perhaps the addition of another fold out or set of bunk beds.
My husband and stayed at the Birch Perch, with our 4 and 1 year old daughters. We all had a wonderful time, the warm water on Birch Lake is crystal clear with sand bottom and shallow for a long ways out; perfect for swimming. The dock is great as there are stairs that walk down into the lake (bottom 2 stairs need some gripper as they are slick). We all had a great time on the paddle boards, even our 1 year old! We took night time rides is the rowboat looking at the stars. Right next door to the property is a secluded small boat launch, which has a little sandy beach area for the kids.
We brought our bikes and rode the exactly 3 miles down to explore the quaint town of Elk Rapids, which was a nice ride partially along lake Michigan. We also biked daily to Wilcox Palmer Shah Nature Preserve (a 5 min bike ride from the cabin), which is the public access to East bay lake Michigan beach. It is a beautiful stretch of beach and lakefront which is like a hidden gem!! Awesome sunsets, long walks on the beach hunting for Petoskey stones and the kids loved swimming and building sand castles on what seemed to be our own private beach!
The cabin has a very roomy feel since it has a lot of windows and is very open floorplan. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need. We had great times around the firepit and bbqing on the gas grill. There is plenty of outdoor seating. It was great to have a washer and dryer to use and there were plenty of linens. We loved the newly remodled bathroom and spacious shower. We felt right at home here!
The only thing we would have enjoyed was a little more sun on the property. It is completely shaded and in the late afternoon the dock was even shaded. But that is just 1 minor detail, otherwise we all had a great vacation and we were so happy we chose to have it at the Birch Perch!!
