Sunset Lodge at Dover Bay
Atop Dover Bay in the upscale residential community of North Nanaimo, ‘Sunset Lodge at Dover Bay’ enjoys phenomenal views of Georgia Strait, Texada Island and the Sunshine Coast with the Coastal Mountains rising in the distance. A ten minute walk through this gorgeous, quiet neighborhood will take you to Invermere/Rafter Park and a nature path to beach access. A ten minute drive will take you to everything else including a boat launch and some of the best shore accessed cold water scuba diving sites in the world. There are basketball courts and a playground across the street, tennis courts down the block.
The Great Room has floor to ceiling plus apex windows overlooking Dover Bay. Enjoy your favorite beverage on the deck at the view counter, mesmerized by the 180 degree ocean view. Observe eagles and hawks soaring, deer frolicking below and a myriad of marine activity that may include dolphins, orca, sea lions and seals. Cruise ships and boats frequent the strait. As the sun finally sets (after 9:30 pm in the summer) you will be treated to an extraordinary sky: never the same one, but always spectacular-- have your camera ready. Bring your telescope or use our telescope binoculars and/or spotting scope and experience the Pacific Northwest starry sky. We have seen the Aurora Borealis from the deck. Spotting scope and/or telescope binoculars available upon request.
While you are enjoying the view, the kids are happily occupied in the large recreation room playing ping pong, Wii video games or watching a movie. The very little ones can amuse themselves with Thomas the Tank trains/track and other preschool toys. Please let us know if you would like to use these items.
Prepare meals in the fully equipped gourmet kitchen complete with bar prep sink. The gas BBQ is on the deck. There are two casual areas to dine: at the huge granite island counter in the large kitchen or in the breakfast nook. The formal dining room seats 8 comfortably.
Don’t feel like cooking but don’t feel like going out? There are many restaurants in the area that will deliver. Or, for a special celebration, let us arrange a scrumptious, gourmet dinner catered and served in the dining room.
Relax in the ‘cozy’ room, our small paperback and games library or use the desk in the downstairs Sunset Suite to write your novel.
The California Suite (Master Bedroom) has a terrific ocean view and it’s own private ocean view deck with café style patio furniture. This room has a California king bed with duvet, a walk in closet and a five piece ensuite bathroom with soaker tub.
The Queen Room has a queen canopy bed and shares a full 4 piece bathroom with the Bunk Bed Room.
The colourful Bunk Bed Room has two twin bunkbeds.
The Sunset Suite has a full bed and a twin bed and it's own
four-piece bathroom. There is also a small kitchen with a full size fridge.
The house sleeps 9 very comfortably in beds. The salon contains two single sleeper sofa beds and can accommodate up to 2 additional persons at the rate of $25.00 per person per night.
Don’t worry about bringing absolutely everything—Sunset Lodge is within minutes of restaurants, bakeries, pubs, cafes, groceries, hardware stores, gas bars, liquor stores and scuba shops. Housekeeping and catering services are available.

Lisa Maddox purchased this house in 2010
Vancouver Island is absolutely paradise! We were so fortunate to find this unique home atop a hill and overlooking the Georgia Strait, within walking distance to the beach. We wanted a magnificent home to host our very large family for vacations and special holidays. We cherish the many memorable occasions we've had at Sunset Lodge and we would spend all our time here if we could!
The phenomenal views from the balcony deck are absolutely mesmerizing. There is nothing better than sitting on the deck, taking in the view and enjoying your favourite beverage.
Excellent property that certainly lived up to its description. We found it clean and well maintained. We did have a couple of problems but they were quickly fixed by the owner. The house is in a smart area, in the Lanzville area of north Nanaimo. It has fine views of the sea, islands and mainland. While not in central Nanaimo it is well located to reach downtown and the surrounding area. A car is almost mandatory, but a bus does pass the house and another route is close by. We are an older couple and it was February so we did not do anything too energetic. Nevertheless, we enjoyed walks along the harbour front in Nanaimo, seaside walks in Parksville, Qualicum Beach and other points of interest. We would certainly recommend the property to anyone.
Have you ever seen that TV home renovation show where everyone screams at the completion of the reno's "Move that bus!!" and the family then gasps, gapes and goes bananas over the miracle they're about to take part in? That's what it's like walking into Lisa's house.
You can't quite believe YOU get to be THERE! You drive up, and it's a 'nice' neighbourhood, very Canadian, suburban. Ample parking, easy to find, and you park the car. Front garden well maintained. Then, you open the door: It's THAT moment when the breathtaking view can not be under estimated. An elegant dining room, a reading room for days of rest and relaxation, but you'll see those in a moment, just walk into the main room - there's room enough for a battalion! But it's the view.....you get up early on your vacation to soak it in and you eat breakfast and lounge on the terrace - wine and cheese. Lisa and Blake have a home on the corner lot - there are no neighbours peeking in - privacy!
The house is furnished with everything you can imagine, and then some - the bar sink, the master bath, the gas bbq, and a basement for a gaggle of teens to hang out and claim as their own - games, games and games - electronic and old fashioned (the kind that require no electricity)
We were 9 - two families blended for a perfect 7 days together - can you live with another family that long and not start to twitch a little at each other's idiosyncrasies? We have known each other for over 20 years, and we're seriously sad and disappointed to leave - each other's company and the house that helped facilitate bringing us from continents apart to our shared vacation - having the space, luxury and ambience - the house.
The from the inlaid bamboo roof detailing to a very handy and welcome easy-to-use washing machine (decorative to functional).
The area, Nanaimo offered so many activities for all of us of different age groups and temperaments - Rathtrevor Beach is a MUST, and if you happen to hit the right time of year, so is the Bathtub Race Parade. One thing you CAN NOT miss - a trip to Pacific Rim Natural Reserve/Kwisitis Visitor's Centre. Want to challenge yourself and your teens? Swing from the trees in the nearby zipline parks (a bit pricey) or simply investigate the local boutique wineries.
We would not hesitate to recommend this property, it's managers or experience the summer again at their home.
Thanks Lisa - for facilitating memories that will last a lifetime!
Our holiday at Sunset Lodge was an amazingly wonderful time! We were able to spread out for each to do their own thing and come together for special moments and meal sharing times. And of course there was “THE VIEW”! How peaceful and awe inspiring! There were the little things too...like the yoga mats where I did sun salutations with my granddaughter in the mornings...the toys that the kids loved...the ping pong table where our youngest daughter maintained her title as family champion...the efficient recycling and composting system that the hippy dippy daughter was thrilled with...the morning sun in the reading room...so many little things! We enjoyed evening walks to the ocean, a beautiful day at the Nanaimo downtown and oceanfront, drives to the quiet beauty of Cathedral Grove and the quirky Coombs Country Market. I am already recommending this property to my friends and relatives!
My husband and I needed a temporary "home" when a work project came up that required us to relocate to Nanaimo for a few months. Sunset Lodge was an ideal home base for us. The house was immaculate, comfortable and incredibly well stocked. With just the two of us we also had tons of space to spread out. The location provided easy access for my husband to get to and from Duke Point every day and for me to explore the area. The amazing views were an added bonus and made a temporary work assignment seem like vacation! The house was also close to lots of everyday essentials we needed for our longer stay. Lisa was extremely helpful whenever any questions arose and very pleasant to deal with! We could not have been more pleased with our choice of Sunset Lodge. Thanks Lisa!
Thank you Lisa and Blake! We had an awesome time at Sunset Lodge! 10 family members came to celebrate our nephew's wedding. The house was absolutely perfect. With the rental of the in-law suite we had more than enough room for us all. We had a blast playing ping pong, showed off our talent at rock band, snuggled on the couch and watched one of your many movies, enjoyed a glass of wine by the fireplace, and had many good meals and laughs in your kitchen/great room.
And the view was spectacular! Your home was immaculate! It was close to everything. We enjoyed walks on the harbor front, the beach, and some shopping at the mall.
This home was perfect for our mini family reunion and even our 9 month old granddaughter enjoyed all the space to explore and enjoy.
I would highly recommend this vacation home!
My family and I recently stayed here for a week and were beyond pleased with our stay at Sunset Lodge! Our week got off to a great start as we got on the ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo. Views from the ferry on the way over were absolutely gorgeous and they didn't stop as we arrived at Sunset Lodge. Pictures of the ocean and mountain views from the house just can't do it justice. On clear days we could see snowcapped mountains across the water. I did not want to leave waking up to that view every morning!
The house itself exceeded our expectations. We just rented the main house, which is beautifully laid out and there was plenty of room for four adults to relax and hangout. Many ping pong wars also took place in the downstairs recreational space!
The house is in a great location if you need to run out for anything. There were plenty of grocery stores, restaurants, and whatever else you may need right around the corner. Victoria is also only about an hour and a half drive. If you have the time, I highly recommend driving down for a day trip to Butchart Gardens. We we're questioning whether to pay to view gardens, but they are well worth it. MacMillan Provincial Park is also about a 30 minute drive from the house and well worth a visit to what I can only describe as forests straight out of a fairy tale.
Overall we highly recommend Sunset Lodge!

Nanaimo has a vibrant downtown/harbour area. Watch float planes and explore quaint shops in Departure Bay. Hike through the awesome rainforest at Cathedral Grove or the tranquil Morrel Sanctuary, or picnic at Englishman River Falls. In the area are five different shore access scuba diving sites, and three artificial reefs to explore. Join a boat tour and snorkel with the seals! Spend the day sunning at Sebastian or Rathtrevor Beaches or play mini-golf, bumper cars or bumper boats 15 minutes away in Parksville. Mount Washington, one hour up island, is home to one of the most spectacular coastal alpine settings in North America. In the winter brush up on your ski skills at the resort school and then ski, snowboard, night ski or experience family snow tubing. In the summer there are a dozen trails that lead up to the summit.
Sunset Lodge is 90 minutes from Victoria, 3 hours from Tofino, 2 hours from the Butchart Gardens and 60 minutes from Comox/Courtney.
A car is recommended, but the city bus stops right in front of the house.
