Light-filled and inviting, this three-level house is biking distance to beautiful beaches and driving distance to all that the Vineyard offers. Built in 1986, the house sits on over an acre of wooded land with stone walls, beetlebung, oaks and birch, a small babbling brook and grape vines. An additional acre of undeveloped wooded land sits directly behind the property. Inside, the house offers wood floors throughout and a wonderful floor-through living area. The house has three modest outdoor decks including a roof deck with water views of Vineyard Sound and the Elizabeth Islands. About Dana An

I am a psychotherapist in Brookline, Massachusetts. In my spare time, I write, read, make art and spend time with family and friends.

Dana An purchased this house in 1998

Why Dana An chose Gay Head - Aquinnah

My husband and I chose this property together. We both wanted to be up-island and away from the bustle of the towns. I love the winding drive through Chilmark and up through Gay Head to get to the house, the chance to be in the woods, the height of the roof deck and the way the kitchen is designed to look out toward the water as I'm cooking. He loves the Bauhaus-inspired layout, the quirky and high end bathroom fixtures from the 1970s (1/2 bath has a black toilet), and the short bike rides to the beaches.

What makes this house unique

The house is tall and narrow and private, with only a few neighbors nearby. The kitchen is efficient and open and it's possible to prepare dinner while the sky changes color. The roof deck is the perfect spot for watching the sunset.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was a pleasure to have booked and lived in Dana's home for a week. We had very good contacts and advices from Dana and although she could not be present during our stay, she left very good information.

The house is tall with 3 terraces, in the middle of the forest, simple but with all of the modern comforts (hi-fi, DVD, laundry, dishwasher) and some bicycles were put at my disposal. In my point of view, it's best to have a car at this part of the island.

Peaceful Quiet and Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Very comfortable home that is true to the photos and description.

Up island is the place to be to avoid any kind of crowd. Period. We made use of the available Philbin Beach pass. I highly recommend acquiring the car pass. Fantastic beach. No crowds any day we were there. Menemsha is a 10 minute bike ride and a quick hop on the bike ferry, our favorite lunch/dinner spot. Comfy beds, a well stocked kitchen, plenty of outdoor space including the huge roof deck and a great main floor for gathering provided the perfect setting for our group. Dana was a pleasure to deal with and responded to questions re: our rental before and during our stay in a friendly and concerned manner. So glad we visited!

A little piece of heaven!

  • 5 of 5

This multi-level house is airy, modern and fun. It had everything we needed. Great location and amenities. It's called the "Aquinnah Treehouse" and it was lovely to hang out on the rooftop deck among the treetops. We especially enjoyed practicing yoga and stargazing at night on the roof. We have stayed in several houses up island and this one is our favorite. The owners are extremely nice. Very caring, attentive and appreciative of our business. It was a fabulous experience and we hope to return soon. Thank you, Dana and Steven!

Great Location and Roof Deck!

  • 4 of 5

This is a very nice, multi-level home in Aquinnah. It is just a few minutes drive to either the Gay Head beach (public) or Philbin Beach (private). In fact, Gay Head beach is only a 15 minute walk. The home is clean, comfortable and decently equipped (except for the lack of internet) and it has a large, very private roof deck with great water views. The owners are wonderful people who really care! I would give it 4.5 stars if that was possible!

Car: recommended

Located on the western-most tip of Martha's Vineyard, Aquinnah is 18 miles from the nearest bustling town. Visitors pass through rural lands, farm steads and salt ponds stretching to the ocean on the way from the ferry. One of 3 up-island towns, it is the part of Martha's Vineyard Obama's family visited to do their biking and it is where Caroline Kennedy makes her Vineyard home. On every side -- north, south, east and west, Aquinnah is abutted by water -- there is sound, surf and pond, awaiting your exploration. This is a town of light, where people come to watch the sunsets and it is a town of color and history, where people visit clay cliffs and the historic lighthouse built in the late 1700s. Venture a mile east from the house and you reach Lobsterville Beach on the Sound; wander a mile and a half west and you are at Philbin, an exclusive town surf beach. In Aquinnah, also known as Gay Head, you are among Wampanoag lands and people, the famous cliffs and world-class fishing spots. Nearby are undeveloped coastal lands, rolling hills, excellent restaurants, farm stands and markets, crafts and shops. The summer activities up-island include camps and programs for children, dance performances, yoga, writing retreats, surf lessons, kayaking, sunset sails, a weekly film festival with guest speakers, talks, classes, nature tours and hiking trails. Surf and sound, beautiful vistas and sunsets, a place of summer -- Aquinnah is a place to unwind.
