Underwhelming at best

  • 2 of 5
Unless you are two people only, stay away from this property.

We arrived a bit late to find the "caretaker" who was supposed to greet us nowhere in sight. Fortunately, the door had been left open. Walking in, the place looks fairly nice - big great room with nice windows, and a nice bedroom with a king bed.

If you could stop there, you'd be doing all right. But there were five of us, so we ventured downstairs to what became known as the "dungeon". The windowless lower level is where 12 of the 14 are to be housed, and is, in a word, a dump. There are three bedrooms, all horrid, two with "bunkhouse" style bunk beds (5 each), no decor, and in one room the lens over the industrial-looking florescent lights was missing. A third room had the "queen" bed (actually a double, hard as a rock and pretty much unusable) as well as some old, crappy furniture. The bath had a large hole in the floor covered by a dirty throw rug, with a power cord running into it for some reason (CHUDS?).

We ended up sharing the upper room with our companions, because we all agreed the basement was such a depressing place.

Otherwise, just a basic inattention to detail. The kitchen faucet was barely installed (it was loose), there were no dishwasher tabs, no umbrella for the east-facing deck table, and the cushions for the metal deck chairs were downright disgusting.

This is luxury?

On the plus side - the view, the quiet, the hot tub, and teh main bedroom/bath. So if you're willing to pay this price for what is essentially a one-BR vacation home, please do.

We will NOT be back.

Owner's Response: We thank you and all of our guests for all of their feedback and we will fully address each issue with complete detail. In the 4 years we have rented our cabin we have never had a negative review like yours.
We want our guests to have the expectation that there is only one bedroom on the main with 3 larger below grade bedrooms in the lower level. These rooms are just like the pictures on the website, other than the colors are updated with fresh paint, a light yellow. The purpose of the rooms are for a clean, dry, quiet place to sleep and not advertised or implied as anything else. The bed coverings and pillows are all from The Company Store Magazine. 2 of the rooms are set up as bunk rooms for kids and close knit families. The Queen room in the basement is a queen bed, I am sorry it felt smaller. We actually had it in the Master bedroom for over 5 years until we recently added the king upstairs and moved it downstairs. The Queen bedroom in lower level does have an egress window if someone desires more light than the 2 bunk rooms.
Our family, friends and guests affectionately call the lower level "The Cave" and many boast it is the best night sleep they have ever had! The bedrooms in the cabin are clearly a place to sleep, not a place to spend the day. We are not sure what you mean by decor in the lower level. The walls are freshly painted, with newer bedding. We don't hang much artwork, but certainly could if guests feel this would add to the decor. The broken plastic light was broken by a child jumping on the bed and my caretaker has ordered a new one!
The hole in the lower level bathroom that you feared CHUDS reside in is a sump pit with sump pump. It is the waterproofing system for the basement. It is covered by a plastic grate, rug and has a cabinet over it. We will make a more diligent attempt to build a better cabinet to cover it, but it keeps the lower level dry.
The cushions on the deck unfortunately are highly used and are many times forgotten to be brought in, when it rains. We plan to exchange them yearly, base on your feedback. Because the home sits so high and overlooks the lake, the risk of having an umbrella blowing away is the trade off for the getting some morning sun until the shade comes in the afternoon. Our caretaker is a gift to us, and does a good job in between guests. He would have gladly tightened the kitchen faucet and supplied dishwashing soap. Thanks for your feedback and we wish you well!

So nice, we did it twice!

This is our second time renting the cabin. We use it as a chance to get our extended, and spread out, family together all in one place. We have built a lot of memories here and are excited to come back again.

Thank you Mari!

What a view! A bald eagle every morning!

  • 5 of 5
This is our favorite rental on Lewis and Clark lake that we have found so far. There are other places available to rent in this same area (Kohles Acres), but none that we have found have this killer view. We spent a weeks worth of sunrises on the porch and like clockwork every morning a bald eagle soared right over the house on its way to go fishing, just like the fishers in their boats on the lake.

We also loved the rental rate. What a deal for a whole week! We got a great view and a great deal. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a Lewis and Clark lake rental. The house is exactly as described and there is a caretaker just down the hill more than willing to provide any help needed.

Can't wait to do it a again.

A PERFECT GET-AWAY

  • 5 of 5
AWESOME!!! I would definitely stay at this home again. I went with a group of ladies and we had fun shopping in Yankton (especially Head2Heels), cooking together (great kitchen-has everything you need), enjoying the view (amazing sunsets), hiking, and relaxing (hot tub, fire pit, games, deck time).

This house is very clean and would work well not only for a group of adults, but also families. It's a great floor plan. The common space works well and the bedrooms feel private. Kids will love the buffalo head. The photos are very accurate.

This home is close enough to Omaha for a weekend away. It's so different from the city that you can easily relax.

I love this lake house!

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful lake house on the gorgeous Lewis and Clark Lake.

The property is perched high above the rest of the community providing an absolutely stunning view of the entire Lewis and Clark Lake.

The house is very roomy and the grounds are well-maintained. My favorite amenity of the entire property is the enormous deck overlooking the lake. This is the perfect spot to reminisce with friends and family over a few drinks as you witness one of the best sunsets of your life. The property also has a hot tub! Be sure and take a dip at night. You won't believe the sky as the stars light up the night sky.

The area is really perfect for any person. The beach is only a few yards away. If you have a boat, the marina is a mile or so. There are plenty of hiking trails and biking/running/walking spots. Tons of places to entertain the kids – go carts, mini golf, ect. About a mile down the road is the bar/restaurant CJ’s, a truly hidden treasure of Americana. There was almost too much for us to do.

Lastly, the entire renting process, from start to finish, was effortless. The owners provided flawless customer service. They have a caretaker nearby that allows for seamless check-in and check-out. I felt comfortable knowing that if I had any issues, the caretaker lived nearby.

If you are looking for a relaxing vacation, this place is a must. We will absolutely be back next year. I can’t recommend it enough!

Lewis and Clark Lake House

I loved every minute of the stay. The views from the expansive windows were stunning. Who would have thought there would be views like this in Nebraska. The setting sun illuminated the rocks on the opposite shore of the lake and they looked like they were aflame with color. The quiet and serenity were a most welcome change from the city. The house was well appointed with everything you would need for a very enjoyable stay. Thanks for the wonderful memories!
