Camden Cottage Rental Photos and Description

A new shingled year-round cottage with old fashioned charm, located at the end of a private road in a state that has been rated the most peaceful in the country and one of the top three states for bicycle touring.

A hundred acres of woods are right out the back door, with hiking trails and swimming in the ocean an lake just five minutes away. It's a peaceful place, private, but not isolated. Neighbors very friendly and the town is community-minded. This is a real neighborhood, with a village market a mile away where the locals meet for coffee every morning, farm stands for fresh bread, milk, vegetables and fruit. A local lobsterman whose wife cooks lobsters he caught in the morning to order for you to pick up in the evening is two minutes away. A local winery is five minutes further.

Five minutes to the ocean, five minutes to the lake, five minutes to hiking trails and the coastal mountains, 10 minutes to Camden, 20 minutes to Belfast, 30 minutes to Rockland.

Safe location for solo woman travelers and perfect for a writer's retreat.

Activities and Attractions: Hiking, fresh vegetables from a nearby farm, and wine tasting at a vineyard 5 minutes up the road. Minutes to sailing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and more hiking to dramatic mountain-top views. Three golf courses within 20 minutes, two of them with ocean views. Dine at Francine's Bistro in the village of Camden (open year round) after an afternoon sail across Penobscot Bay, fresh lobster from a fisherman a minute down the road (cooked to order and pick up) or at Lincolnville Beach, or dine at internationally rated Primo's in Rockland after touring local museums and galleries, lighthouses and cobblestone beaches. There is no shortage of year-round fine dining and views on the Maine coast. Back at the cottage at night, loons call from a nearby pond, owls hoot from several hundred acres of woods out the back door. Wild turkeys and deer regard the field as their own and moose and bald eagles make periodic visits. This is the real Maine --all the amenities and stunning beauty the Penobscot Bay area is known for are just ten minutes away, but the serenity and simple beauty of the cottage in a small town that will feel like home.

Summer Amenities: Canoe, paddles, life-jackets. Washer and dryer. Full Kitchen. Herb garden growing outside door. Linens, towels, soap, paper products included. Charcoal grill and picnic table. Books, board games. Basic satellite TV. DVD/VCR. Tons of old movies. For other gear: Kayak rentals, bicycle rentals, guided trips, two-hour sails are all close by. Solid recommendations for where to go and what to see, on and off the beaten track, from a local who knows the area inside-out.

Description: Time to get away from thumb cramps and the constant cellphone chatter? Time to read the latest mystery and watch hummingbirds cruise the wildflowers and go canoeing in the lake and eat lobster next to the shore in the evening? And not pay waterfront rates to do it? This is the place.

This is a modern, private Maine shingled cottage built ten years ago as a year-round house. It's a sweet retreat. The owner is on the property in another cabin not visible from the cottage.

About Christine

Christine is a newspaper reporter in Midcoast Maine with a background in natural resources and conservation. She is a Penobscot Bay Steward and a former forest service ranger and educator.

Why Christine chose Camden

I grew up in the area and wanted to build a house near Camden Hills State Park and near Megunticook Lake and near the ocean. I also wanted a house that had a lot of windows that framed the natural setting. I designed the house, which was built ten years ago by a family of carpenters I've known for 30 years. The finish work and interior were completed by me, with the help of close friends.

What makes this cottage unique

The house has in-floor heat and a marble hearthstone gas parlor stove, plus a choice of electric hot water or hot water on demand. Winter sunshine glows off the wide pine floors during winter. Its a cozy and welcoming year-round house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

(These guests liked to drive and took a lot of day trips up to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, which is just under two hours, and Downeast to Campobello and Quoddy Head, about 3.5 hours away).

I have never in my life seen such beautiful 360 degree view than that from Cadillac Mountain. It was spectacular.

The cottage was the perfect size for my daughter and I and a great place to come back to at night. Sad to go. Thanks, Christine.

Beautiful little house

  • 5 of 5
This house was a great find! Set back from the road and nestled in woods, it is very secluded while only 4 miles or so from the Lincolnville beach on Penobscot Bay. Everything was extremely well-finished, clean, and worked well. The kitchen/great room was well stocked with more than the basics; spices, teas, coffee, lobster-eating necessities, books, pillows, park passes, etc. The owner was available via cellphone when I had a question. Hummingbirds came to the window boxes. All our meals in town and in Camden were excellent. I would definitely recommend this home to anyone.

Owner's Response: Renting your house by the week is a business. After five years, I've worked out the kinks! Every year, I upgrade the cottage in the spring. Before I rent I talk to all guests to make sure the cottage is what they are looking for, I require a modest refundable deposit, and greet guests when they arrive to answer questions and provide directions to local attractions. The result is my property is treated well and that allows my guests to have a great and relaxing vacation!

A lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5
Wildflower Cottage is a beautifully kept and charming place to spend a relaxing vacation -- the photos really do match reality! We enjoyed hiking in the area, the ferry to lovely Islesboro, daily lobster consumption, exploring local towns - esp. Camden, Belfast, and Rockport - and hosting old friends from Portland for a day. Christine does a wonderful job managing the house. 100% recommend!

We had a fantastic time at the Wildflower Cottage. It was clean and attractive and the owner was extremely helpful and friendly. We hope to visit again. The house is perfectly situated close to the lake and the ocean. The drive from Camden to the house is both dramatic and gorgeous. No need to promote the wonders of Camden either - great restaurants and shops and views!

Quiet Get-Away...

  • 5 of 5
Wildflower Cottage was just as lovely as the description. Arriving in mid June, the wildflowers were in bloom and the drive up the cottage lane gave us a view which was amazingly like the photo. A welcoming note, with a phone number for any concerns, and fresh flowers awaited our arrival. We were impressed with the cleanliness and comfort - the needs of the guests had been well thought out and we wanted for nothing.

We spent our days hiking, visiting lighthouses, cemeteries, and driving to different ports for walks and lunch. Most evenings we were happy to be back at the cottage and prepare a meal there.

I would certainly recommend this property for a relaxing holiday. We hope to be able to return as there were many places we were unable to visit in a week and some which would be worth a second visit.

Great getaway spot.

We had such a wonderful time at the Wildflower Cottage. It is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful setting, yet so convenient to so many interesting and fun activities. Christine is an exceptionally gracious hostess. Not only was she full of advice on places to see and eat (her restaurant recommendations were spot-on), but she went the extra mile to point out scenic biking routes and even made great suggestions of views for me to paint.

Owner's Response: Before they come, I ask my guests what their interests are, so I can either send them information ahead of time or fill them in when they arrive. I grew up in this area and am a newspaper reporter and an outdoorsperson and previously worked as a natural sciences educator -- so I can point guests off the beaten path, if that's what they want.
I pointed Bob to some places that I thought would be inspiring to paint. He started four paintings of the area while he was here and later sent me photographs of the completed work.

Camden cottage

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage for a week. Our hostess, Christine was so nice and helpful. There were so many things to do close by. Or when we wanted to just relax the cottage was very private. All I can say is we can't wait to go back, we loved it!!!

Owner's Response: I sent Debbie and Bob information on attractions, like antiquing and hiking, that they were interested in well before they arrived, so they could plan their vacation in advance. Late July through October has so many festivals, art, sailing and other attractions that it is hard to decide whether to go for a two hour sail, hike to a mountain with on ocean view or eat lobster on the dock.

Sail Penobscot Bay for the day, take a lobster boat tour on Penobscot Bay, hike the Camden Hills in the state park, rock climb on Megunticook cliffs, golf next to the ocean breeze, fish for stripers, bicycle the island of Islesboro, visit offshore islands by ferry, picnic at lighthouses, look for whales and puffins off the Monhegan cliffs. The Camden Harbor/Lincolnville area is at the heart of Penobscot Bay, one of the premier sailing locations on the international yachting circuit because it is filled with islands, surrounded by low coastal mountains and has some of the best sailing and coastal in the world. Plus, the ocean breeze is refreshingly cool on even the hottest August day.
