Uvita House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths (Sleeps 9)

This craftsman inspired tropical Villa is nestled on 3.75 acres of private paradise in the rainforest jungle of Bahia Ballena. The panoramic views of the ocean, Isla Ballena, Cano Island, Tres Hermanas (Three Sisters rocks), Osa Peninsula, and the rainforest will take your breath away!

The Villa is ideally located at a comfortable elevation of 200 meters, approximately 5.7 miles south of the town of Uvita in 'Perla de Ballena' - a private gated wildlife reserve surrounded by 100+ acres of rainforest.

Built in 2008, Villa Kristina Maria sleeps up to 9 people in 4 spacious bedrooms (including two master suites), 3.5 bathrooms, over 2250 sq. ft. of indoor living space plus 1500+ sq. ft. of covered wraparound decks with lounge chairs and rocking chairs for relaxing and soaking in the scenery.

The Villa offers a truly unique and private location with a spacious open floorplan designed for indoor/outdoor living, lots of windows with screens, and ceiling fans in every room and on the decks.

Relax as you sip a margarita at the bar on the palapa covered deck adjacent to the sparkling tiled swimming pool that features a serene rock waterfall surrounded by lush tropical plants and flowers. The palapa deck has a wetbar with a bar refrigerator, 5 bamboo barstools, 2 bamboo lounge chairs, a loveseat and arm chairs. You'll never want to leave!

The Villa is tropically furnished with locally crafted bamboo furniture and beautiful artwork by Costa Rican artisans. Each of the four bedrooms has a queen sized bed, pillowtop mattress, bamboo headboard, mirrored armoire wardrobe, an arm chair, and a covered deck with a ceiling fan, a rocking chair, and views of the ocean, islands and jungle.

The kitchen features stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher, tropical designed dishes, a breakfast bar, and is fully equipped with a toaster, electric coffee maker, blender, pots and pans, linens and cooking utensils.

The dining room has an oval bamboo dining table that seats 8 people. You can also dine al fresco at the bamboo table on the deck, or at the palapa bar.

Enjoy the sights and sounds of nature: Howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, white-nosed coati mundis (raccoon family), agoutis, iguanas, toucans, parrots, many other exotic birds, beautiful butterflies including the spectacular blue morpho, dragonflies, frogs, lizards, and other jungle wildlife.

Hike to nearby waterfalls in 'Perla de Ballena' eco-community and private reserve. Relax in a lounge chair and enjoy the tranquility and soothing sounds of the rainforest, or read a book in a comfortable bamboo rocking chair on the deck.

Minutes to beautiful tropical beaches where the jungle meets the shore, and the ocean temperatures range from 80-88 degrees year round!

Convenient to delicious restaurants in Uvita, Ojochal and Dominical, banks, grocery and convenience stores, gas station, and a multitude of nearby activities that include swimming, surfing, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, fishing, boating, kayaking, snorkeling, zipline canopy tours, hiking, exploring ocean caves and rainforest waterfalls, ATV tours, learning about jungle flora and fauna on a guided hike at Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge, Don Lulo's horseback riding tour to Nauyaca Waterfalls, visiting Reptilandia (a reptile zoo), and shopping for souveniers at beachside stalls on Playa Dominical, or at the Community Market in Uvita on Saturday mornings.

Ballena Beach Club access is included with this rental. Ballena Beach Club has a restaurant, swimming pool, bar, restrooms, parking, and a private access to Playa Ballena in Marino Ballena National Park.

A separate and private studio casita (Casita Kristina Maria #369661) may be rented separately, if available, for 2 additional people.

To take a virtual tour and view more photos of the property, see the 'Links to more information' below, which includes a link to the main house Villa Kristina Maria, and a link to the Casita.

A 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary. We would be happy to refer you to a reputable and reasonable rental car company. We also provide our guests with contact information for making reservations for nearby activities and excursions.

About Kathy Divel, Owner

We live in San Juan Capistrano, in Southern California. Kathy is a real estate broker, and Steve is a general contractor working for a local structural steel company. We have a daughter in her mid-20's, and 4 dogs and a parrot. We brought three of the dogs home from Costa Rica. Steve surfs, and we enjoy nature and hiking. Our favorite beaches are Playa Ballena at Ballena Beach Club, Playa Arco, and Playa Ventanas. Our favorite restaurant is Exotica in Ojochal, Costa Rica - their Chicken Exotica is Kathy's favorite, and their 'Devil's Fork' dessert is delicous.

Kathy Divel, Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why Kathy Divel, Owner chose Uvita

We fell in love with the spectacular views, the gorgeous scenery, private location, and abundant wildlife in the gated reserve of Perla de Ballena in the South Pacific region of Costa Rica. The Costa Rican people are so warm and friendly, and made us feel welcome.

Perla de Ballena, the private wildlife reserve in a gated community where Villa Kristina Maria is located, reminds Kathy's mother of Jurassic Park because of its lush natural environment and abundant wildlife. Being surrounded by nature is a peaceful and renewing experience.

We purchased the property in December of 2006, designed the home in early 2007, started construction in mid-2007 with Ecomaderas, a local Tico contractor, and completed construction in early 2008. We are proud of the way the home blends so seamlessly into the rainforest.

What makes this house unique

Relax to the sound of the river cascading through rainforest. You'll be lulled to sleep by croaking frogs and the sounds of the jungle at night. Awaken to the distinct roar of howler monkeys as they traverse through the jungle, and the squawking of green parrots flying overhead. At lowtide, and when the surf is big, you can hear the waves crashing on the beach.

Included in the vacation rental is access to Ballena Beach Club. Ballena Beach Club is a beachside restaurant and bar, swimming pool, shower, and restroom facilities with private access to Playa Ballena in Marina Ballena National Park. Playa Ballena is a beautiful tropical beach with views of Tres Hermanas rocks and Isle Ballena. The ocean water temperature is a warm 80-88 degrees year-round. Monkeys and scarlet macaws are often sighted in the trees surrounding the beach.

Villa Kristina Maria is located in Perla de Ballena - a private, gated, and protected wildlife reserve. It is an ideal setting for viewing the flora and fauna of the rainforest in more than 100 acres of primary and secondary rainforest, streams, waterfalls, and hiking trails.

An Oasis in the Rainforest!

  • 5 of 5

We've just spent 12 of the most perfect days here at Villa Kristina Maria. To make it even better, the owners were here with us. Their knowledge of the area and the experiences they've had over the last 6 years gave us an even better perspective of things to see and do. Each beach, Ballena, Ventanas, Uvita, Hermosa, Tail of the Whale, Dominical, and Arco has its own unique qualities and are highly recommended. A trip to the waterfall in Uvita is a must along with the horseback ride to Nauyaca waterfalls and a river ride down the Sierpe to see the mangroves and wildlife. Even those days spent here at the villa had their own adventure with hikes around the property to several small waterfalls or even just lounging by the pool with the frogs and lizards. Treat yourselves to a dinner (or 2) at Exotica in Ojochal-you won't be disappointed, but reservations are a must! The chicken exotica was delicious as well as the salmon. Leave room for lime pie, devil's fork or the passion fruit ice cream desserts...they're to die for! The minute you enter the villa you know you've entered a 5 star accommodation. Just about everything is Costa Rican made and the attention to detail is impeccable. You won't find many other VRBO's as beautifully decorated, well-equipped, welcoming and relaxing while being pleasantly affordable. Take time to read through the binder of things to see and do, as well as places to eat. I would recommend this villa along with the casita in a heartbeat to others and would definitely stay here again myself. It's obvious to all who come here how much the owners love and care for their home. They have gone out of their way to ensure you have the time of your lives and experience a slice of HEAVEN...pura vida!

A quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had the enormous pleasure of staying here for six weeks. The panoramic views down the valley to the ocean are breathtaking. The house sits perfectly in its rainforest setting. Although there are other houses around, you cannot see any of them and the impression is of total seclusion. The pool is lovely with its jungle waterfall and comes complete with its own family of anolis lizards (quite harmless and fun to watch). It is a bumpy rough ride up and down the mountain, but with a good 4 x 4 it is perfectly doable and, after you have done it a few times, becomes second nature. The house itself is very comfortable, there were a few issues with things breaking down (to be expected in this tough climate), but these were ably and promptly dealt with by the management team. Indeed, it was reassuring to know that people were on hand not too far away, as, on arrival, the impression is of being miles away from civilisation! On that note, we could not get a cell phone signal at all, however, the WiFi, for the most part, worked very well. If you want to spend some time away from it all then Villa Kristina Maria is certainly the place to be. We would certainly stay here again.

Chilling in the Jungle!!

  • 5 of 5

The house is fabulous, with wonderful inside/outside flow. Lots of windows and glass doors allows for easy viewing of the surrounding greenery. Decks are very inviting and covered, so you can sit out during the rain. Pool is more functional than it looks in pictures and the back drop of plants and waterfall is gorgeous. Tons of fans, both inside and out, keep the air moving. Super well equipped. Binders with info on the area. All makes this place very homey and comfortable, while feeling private and safe.

The road up to the house is a classic 4x4 road and the driveway quite steep. But it is concrete and very doable. Walking the road was our daily, private jungle hike. Saw all kinds of animals. Did not see any snakes, but made sure to stay open roads/trails!

Uvita is a great location to spend time and have a more "authentic" experience of Costa Rica. It is right between the central tourist areas to the north and the remoteness of the Osa. Very good amenities such as grocery stores and restaurants. And the jungle pretty much goes from the mountains to the beach, except in town. Which translates to wildlife everywhere.

The beaches around Uvita are great for body surfing and boogie boarding. Not the huge waves and strong undertow of the more surfer-oriented beaches like Dominical, Playa Hermosa, Santa Teresa, etc. Our favorite was Playa Ballena that was accessed via the Marina Ballena Club. A great perk that comes with the house. Sitting where the jungle meets the beach, plenty of shade and wildlife bursting in the background. Totally awesome.

Highly recommend. Wish we stayed there longer!

Great Jungle Experience

  • 4 of 5

Seven of us enjoyed Villa Maria for ten days last January. What an amazing house in a superb location! Travelers who want to experience the real Costa Rica will love Villa Maria. The house itself is spacious with all the amenities anyone could need. The location is beautiful with lots of wildlife. The road is like many roads in the area and four wheel drive is a must. Count on a 20 minute drive from the highway to the house. And you will catch your breath every time you hit the house driveway but it's a short ride. We can't say enough good things about the house and its management. It truly is Pura Vida!

Great for some privacy and not too far from everything.

  • 4 of 5

This is my second stay at Kristina Maria, being one month long this time. Because I really like it here! I always have a 4x4 and it is almost mandatory. The drive from the highway is at least ten minutes over a rough road but well worth it. For me, the lack of neighbors is premium. I could hear someone working occasionally 100-200 meters away through the jungle but never saw a soul. The Casita has not been rented while I was here so it has been especially private. The whole scene here is very beautiful. The Budweiser frogs talk half the night, but easy to sleep to. One afternoon a large batch of small moths hatched right from the hedge in front of the deck. A few minutes later there was a huge flock of swallows darting all around having a feast. Whether rain or shine, the view down the valley to the ocean changes with birds, sun, rain, shadows and wisps of clouds.

The beautiful waterfall above the pool bring does some extra debris to clean, but I enjoy the daily routine of skimming it out. A pool man does come at least once a week to check and clean also. There are some baby and adult basilisks that live around the pool also ( Jesus Lizards that run on water ). It's cool to see one zip right across the pool. I have looked every night but have never seen a snake. You will see some small mammals occasionally too. The howler monkeys are far enough away to hear faintly but not see. They can be very loud so this is good!

The house can hold many people but I have stayed here by myself for two weeks and it is very comfortable.( I like the tranquility ) With the locking gate on the main road, I do lock the house when I leave but do not have concerns for safety whether here or away. I also cook a lot here and the kitchen is quite complete and adequate. Cell service is lacking, however the internet has slowed but never failed.

For me I could give this five stars, but for anyone who is not a 4x4er or likes to have more cleaning done this may be an awesome four star location. That being said, Christine and Tom are very nice people who live at the top of the ridge and can help out in many ways. In my seven visits to Costa Rica this property is the best suited to my tastes and my favorite.

Pura Vida

P.S. Do the Superman Zipline at Osa Mountain Resort. Wow!
