Beautifully remodeled, our unique and inviting home features large rooms, eclectic furnishings (including many antiques), upscale appliances and a private yard with tropical landscaping in a setting just minutes from the heart of Coconut Grove, Biscayne Bay, downtown Miami and the beaches.
The spacious master suite has hardwood floors, a half-bath in the bedroom, a large walk-in closet and a luxurious master bath with 2-person Jacuzzi, beautifully tiled shower, smoked unpolished granite counters, twin sinks and a separate WC. Completely remodeled in 2010, the master suite includes a leather sofa, queen bed and antique furnishings including two unique “Bollywood” pieces we brought back from Europe. Occupying its own wing of the house, the master suite is a very private and luxurious space.
The large second bedroom, which was the original master, has its own ensuite bathroom which we enlarged and redid in 2010. This bedroom has a queen bed, antique oak dresser and rocking chairs, beautifully tiled floors and a walk-in closet.
The third bedroom is smaller but charming, with hardwood floors and several antiques. It has a pretty metal-framed day bed that converts to two full-height twin beds. Three antique art deco stained glass windows built into the bedroom wall contribute to the special feel of this room. A full bath is located directly across the hall.
All mattresses and pillows are enclosed in allergy covers and the house AC systems are equipped with high-end electronic filters to minimize dust and other airborne allergens.
The custom kitchen features stunning cabinetry and lighting fixtures, Italian floor tile and a separate breakfast area. It is equipped with upscale stainless steel appliances (Miele, Bosch, KitchenAid) and top-of-the-line cookware (Calphalon, Henckels, etc). The eclectic furnishings include an antique fireplace mantle from Connecticut, a retro atomic-age wall clock and beautiful round hardwood table. The adjacent laundry room has a new LG high efficiency washing machine and two Whirlpool Duet dryers. Unlimited hot water on demand is available throughout the house.
The living room is large and beautifully furnished, yet extremely comfortable. The recently-refinished red oak floors are complimented by two large Oriental carpets. Furnishings include an antique coffee table from India, leather chairs, an antique apothecary cabinet from mid-19th century Hungary, an oak dining table and an upright Steinway piano (for use by adults only, please). Three steps down from the living room is the Florida room, featuring a 50” flat screen LG TV with cable (and DVR), Internet-connected Blu-ray player (capable of accessing your Netflix or Hulu accounts, etc) and 5.1-channel surround sound.
The front yard features a large covered porch with slate flagstones, ceiling fans and speakers connected to the indoor stereo. It’s a great place to have your morning coffee or evening cocktail. A table and chairs can be used for outdoor dining. Kids and adults alike love the hanging Key West hammock chairs . This outdoor room looks out on tropical landscaping and is shielded from passersby by an architect-designed aluminum mesh fence.
WiFi is provided throughout the house by an Apple Airport Extreme base station with Airport Express repeaters.
Upscale white towels and linens are provided, along with beach towels and a sun umbrella, and the kitchen is stocked with basic cooking supplies (oil, vinegar, seasonings, etc).
All windows are impact glass. All windows and exterior doors meet Miami-Dade's strict hurricane code.
The Vizcaya MetroRail station is a short walk away. It’s a 5-minute drive to the restaurants, parks and nightlife of central Coconut Grove and Mary Brickell Village or to downtown Miami; 15 minutes to Key Biscayne and its beaches; and 20 minutes to South Beach. Miami International Airport is a 15-20 minute drive and it’s 30 minutes to Fort Lauderdale International.
We're both from California; met in high school and reconnected 30+ years later. Leora (Herrmann) is a partner in a Miami law firm and Jeffrey (Pierce), who also has a law degree, has spent the last few years writing music. Recently, we have been splitting our time between Miami and Baltimore, where Leora's daughter, an up-and-coming fashion designer, is starting a business. We love travel, books (you'll find hundreds in the house), gardening, movies and music.
We bought our house because it is conveniently located, has larger rooms than most Miami homes, and has a big yard with large oak trees. We then set out to completely remodel it. The result is a product of our eclectic taste borne of our childhoods in California, Leora's lengthy stint in New England and Jeffrey's years living in London, Paris and Ireland. It is elegant, yet casual, and (we think) very very pretty.
Some of our special touches include art deco era stained glass windows built into our interior living room wall, beautiful rose onyx shower tiles, custom Nantucket Blue kitchen cabinets, unpolished 'smoked' granite in the master bath, and -- our big weakness -- very cool lighting fixtures.
Because we both love nature and the house is in the Grove, we replaced the front lawn with tropical plants, many native, and added a large covered porch equipped with ceiling fans and hanging hammock chairs. For privacy, our architect designed a brushed aluminum mesh fence.
Most of our furniture was picked up over the years in California, New England or Europe. It's as eclectic as the house -- including items such as an antique fireplace mantle from Connecticut, 'Bollywood' wardrobes Jeffrey brought home from London, an antique apothecary cabinet and architect's desk (both from 19th century Central Europe), an antique oak breakfast table from Maryland and Oriental rugs.
Very spacious house with unique furnishings, many antique; very large and private master suite with separate WC and shower and a 2-person Jacuzzi; hardwood and imported tile floors; upscale appliances; and easy access to everything Miami has to offer.
We love Coconut Grove, the most magical part of the Magic City, where banyan trees grow, residents cultivate lush tropical gardens, sailors moor their boats and no one takes themselves too seriously. A few minutes from our house, you'll find Kennedy Park, with three beach volleyball courts, a running track with vitacourse, and a playground for kids. It's a great place to picnic, jog or walk. Pick up your picnic supplies at the gourmetFresh Market, just past the park, or dine at one of the Grove's many restaurants. We love Lulu's small plates and outdoor seating. The Paragon movie theater at Cocowalk, just a 5 minute drive from our house, offers reserved seats and a wine bar. Grab a quick meal at Bice before the show or stroll down Grand for an after-movie dinner at Jaguar where the ceviche is out of this world. If you're looking for a faster pace, the vibrant nightlife of Mary Brickell Village and South Beach are just a short drive away. For lovers of classical music, we recommend the New World Symphony wallcasts on South Beach, where live performances are projected onto the exterior of the beautiful Frank Gehry concert hall. Of course, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami also offers concerts as well as opera, dance and theater. Sports fans won't want to miss our own Miami Heat. Keep an eye out for Lebron James. He lives in the Grove, a few blocks away, and frequently bikes to the arena. Don't miss Fairchild Tropical Garden. The giant banyan trees that line Old Cutler Road en route to the Garden are breathtaking. You'll enjoy getting there as much as you love the botanical garden itself. And, of course, there's the beach. Key Biscayne is only a few minutes away. A 20 minute drive with gorgeous views of the Miami skyline and Biscayne Bay will get you to South Beach. To learn more about South Beach's famed art deco architecture, or the history of Miami itself, visit the downtown History Miami museum or sign up for one of the museum's fabulous walking or boat tours given by the engaging Paul George.
