About The Owner

Doug is a retired businessman who traveled the world for a living; Barbara a retired editor, retail manager, and Jill-of-all-trades. We both enjoy traveling, staying in foreign countries long enough to see the sights and absorb some of the local culture.

Both of us are very involved in community volunteer work. Barbara a fund raiser for the Hoodland Women's Club, currently attempting to bring in funds to construct a new community center.

Jed, our German Shepherd, doesn't let us forget his daily frisbee session or walk. He keeps us company during the day while Doug gardens, pastes together our 1920's house or works in his shop, and Barbara gardens, writes, prepares feasts or does needlework. We are both avid readers and music lovers.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1993

Why The Owner chose Welches

We chose this property because it came with the house on a beautiful twelve acres of land on the Salmon River. We have traveled a fairly large swath of the Earth and think this is one of the most beautiful places in it. It also is only an hour's drive from the attractions of Portland in one direction and the Columbia River Gorge in another. Barbara grew up spending summers in the family cottage on the Salmon River near their current dwelling.

What makes this cottage unique

Being secluded at the end of a dead end gravel road, having riverfront acreage with a swimming hole, a place to watch salmon spawning in autumn, a shopping center only five minutes away and a resort just across the river.

As Advertised!

What a lovely place with lovely owners and Jed too! Everything was as advertised, clean, stocked, cozy!

We love to hike and it was so nice to be able to just walk out the back door and start exploring. Grilling on the patio, sitting by the fire indoors, everything was like a dream.

We highly recommend Dancing Bear and hope that we can also return soon.

A PERFECT little cabin in the woods!

A Perfect Peace of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing time. Felt like something out a fairy tale. The weather was stormy and yet peaceful. We cuddled on the couch and listened to the flowing water from the creek off the back porch. From the outside to the inside it was a dream come true. I would love to come in the spring as I would love to walk through the back yard which they have created a park like environment with cobblestone accessories fire pits, trails, gardens. Very Romantic Wish we didn't have to come home.

Blissful

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I and our dogs just had the most blissful, relaxing, comfortable late-fall getaway ever at this perfect little cabin. The cabin looks rustic, but the amenities are extraordinary. Warm, beautifully furnished, wonderful bed, perfect tiny kitchen with nice pots and pans for cooking, if you desire.

The front of the cabin faces the pretty yard and creek, and the beautiful woods. Our first day was spent on hiking trails, exploring the forest right in our front yard! Mt. Hood village is less than two miles away - there is a great supermarket, coffee/espresso place, a few restaurants, and even a bakery. Mt. Hood and its world of recreational activities is very close by.

Doug and Barbara were extremely gracious and helpful, and their gorgeous dog Jed is a sweet, gentle giant.

I would give it 6 stars if I could!

Delightful Getaway

Charming location and hosts. As clean and tidy as can be. Completely accommodating. Added bonus.....the Wonder Dog. Trust your GPS - it will get you there but cell service is a bit tentative. Would return in an instant!
