Traverse City Apartment Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom Guest Suite With Kitchenette, Sleeps 4

Welcome to our home! We just finished building it in June (2013). It is one of the coolest houses in Northwest Michigan. We live on the 2nd and 3rd floors with an amazing view of West Grand Traverse Bay. It is a passive and active solar home. We are 2 blocks west of downtown Traverse City - on West Bay across from the West End Beach. Our guest suite is on the first floor of our home AND it has a private entry off the front door. It includes a living room, bedroom (with a Queen size bed) and a full bath with a tub. The living area has a sofa bed (with a memory foam mattress), TV with cable, WIFI, and a kitchenette. The kitchenette has a full size refrigerator, hot plate, microwave, sink and a coffee maker.

Most are downtown across from West Bay within walking distance of everything that Traverse City has to offer. Park Your Car!

Walk, bike or drive to our many restaurants, wineries, breweries, bars and food trucks:

Come for all our festivals, for the Great Lakes, for family and new friends. Use our place as a hub for all your explorations to the surrounding counties!

You can connect to miles of paved trials just across the street. Mountain bikers and cross country skiers will enjoy 3-25k loops at the Vasa trail system. Bike, kayak and stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the Bayfront Park, approximately 1/4 mile away. Hiking and fly fishing are superb on the Boardman River, a blue-ribbon trout stream. Just 30 minutes to the north, Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore was recently named the most beautiful place in America.

There are museums - the north's only children's museum and Dennos Museum, which holds the world's largest collection of Inuit art. There are numerous art galleries. Our downtown is one of the most vibrant in the state - unique shops abound.

Named a top five Foodie Town by Bon Appetit, we love our local restaurants and will point you in the right direction. The best bakery in town is a half block away and you can often smell fresh bread and cinnamon rolls baking at night. There are a number of wineries on both our peninsulas and microbreweries abound.

Traverse City is home to the State Theatre, just named the top small theater in the country - you can walk to the State and its new sister theater, Bijou by the Bay. Art and first run films are shown at the theater, along with kid's 25-cent matinees and classic films on Wednesday mornings. Traverse City's Film Festival takes place the first week of August - it is in its ninth year, attracting film makers, actors and producers from around the world.

Just down the block -

Bay Bakery - the best bakery in town.

Frenchies (Breakfast and Lunch)

Sledders Restaurant - kiss the moose!

Wonder Freeze Ice Cream

About Bob Eichenlaub

I am retired Special Education Teacher and builder and Becky is manager at a local foundation. We are avid runners, bikers and skiers. I have biked all over the world and love biking here the best. We have lived here for decades and love Traverse City!

Bob Eichenlaub purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Bob Eichenlaub chose Traverse City

The ‘Rock Shop 2’ started 3 years ago when my wife and I were looking for a new home. We stumbled onto an old storefront with a house attached. The “Davidson Rock Shop” had been polishing Petoskey stones and selling them to tourists for over 50 years. The building was part of Traverse City’s original downtown and was built just after the Civil War. It sits across the street from the public beach on West Bay - an awesome location, just 2 blocks away from downtown.

We decided to tear down the commercial side and sell the small house to some friends. The design was particularly difficult due to the fact that the commercial infill lot that was left was 25’ wide and 117’ deep AND we needed a ‘one hour fire rated wall’ on the long sides. That means no windows on the long sides. A big challenge was bringing light into a ‘shotgun’ style house.

The other big design consideration was that I wanted to build the most energy efficient building in Traverse City. The building follows a German design standard called Passiv House. This design standard has four main criteria 1) Super-insulation 2) Very tight envelope 3) an Energy Recovery Ventilator to bring in fresh air and is 4)Solar heated.

I retired last June from teaching and started tearing down the old building the next day. The final design (I went through 4 major design changes) has a small apartment and a garage on the first floor. The second floor has the main living space and has a ‘clear story’ that goes up to the third floor and the decks, flooding the house with light. The floors and the domestic hot water are heated by the solar panels on the roof. Last week we got a courtesy call from DTE saying that we would not be getting a bill for the month of May because they do not send out bills less than $ 30.00.

What makes this apartment unique

We are so very happy with our new home, it is nothing short of amazing! It has turned out better than we expected. Look out your front window on one of the most pristine bays in the world!

CAUTION: A sign has gone up on the bank across the street. Apparently, a developer has purchased the building and is planning on razing the building and constructing condos in its place. We are not sure of his timeline, but he may start this summer (2015). Fortunately, we'll still keep our view, AND due to the fact that our house is super insulated; we don't think the noise should be a problem.

Why would we want to tell others about this fabulous place and risk it being booked when we're ready to go back?! We have used VRBO on many occasions and have always had great experiences; this was no exception. There was a difference however: this was quite possibly the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in at a rental property. The place is small, as described, but beautifully decorated and there was plenty of room for the 2 of us - we never felt crowded. There is a beautiful view of the bay, a short walk to town and wonderful restaurants nearby. Although we never got to meet Bob and Becky during the 2 nights we were there, we enjoyed reading the story of the Rock Shop and agreed with and enjoyed several of the restaurant recommendations. We've visited Traverse City many times: it is a beautiful area, great downtown shopping, golf and wineries are nearby. We stayed in the Fall but the beach would have also been convenient had we been there in the summer. We'll need to make several trips back just to hit all of the restaurants we missed in this Foodie paradise. We can highly recommend this property (unless you're trying to stay when we're ready to revisit....).

Clean, bright, roomy and perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

This is billed as a Studio but it doesn't appear that way at all! There is a lovely double glass door that slides open (like a modern barn door) to the bedroom and bathroom area. The living area is light, roomy, and the furniture is new and perfect for lounging comfortably. There is a desk area as well.

The bedroom furniture features a beautiful antique high back scrolled wood headboard and footboard, and a gorgeous matching dresser/mirror with plenty of storage space. There is also a large closet for additional storage.

We loved the heated floors!!! So nice to wake up on those cool October mornings and feel warmth under your feet.

The owners are so accommodating & helpful, including allowing us to keep our bikes in their garage. The apartment has its own entry so you never feel like your are intruding on anyone's privacy and visa versa!

The location is so convenient to downtown (within walking distance), and the TART Bike Trail, and you can't beat having the smell of fresh bread wafting through the air at Bay Bread just a few steps away. We also LOVED Frenchies Bistro just a few doors down - Seats only 10 people, so plan ahead - it is worth it. Convenient food/wine/liquor store right down the street as well.

We plan to come back to Traverse City and book this unit again.

Rock shop hideaway strongly recommended

We absolutely loved our experience at this lovely apartment! It's a unique and cozy place that is clean, well cared for, and close to everything! We enjoyed being able to see the lake from our windows, and walk downtown to all the restaraunts and shopping options Traverse City has to offer. Bob and Becky were wonderful hosts. I would strongly recommend this apartment to anyone looking for a home away from home. We will definitely be back!

This was our first VRBO experience and our first trip to Traverse City, so we were a little nervous about it all . . . but it was awesome! From the start -- when I emailed Bob to see if we could bring our noisy blender -- to the finish -- when I wondered about our deposit refund, the owners were responsive, kind, and helpful. The listing description is spot on. The studio apartment was clean, well-appointed and so cool. The owners prepared a 3-ring binder with all kinds of recommendations for restaurants, sights to see, and a history of their property. Top-notch customer service. They even invited us to tour the house before we left. One really impressive thing? Bob asked if we had any suggestions and we had a couple little ones about the bathroom fan (so quiet we weren't sure it was turned on) and what can guests put in the recycle. By the time we returned home Sunday night, Bob had sent us an email with photos of the labels to clarify our questions for future guests. It's so refreshing to know that others listen! So, yes, we would highly recommend this to a friend or relative. Loved being within walking distance to awesome restaurants and seeing the view of the bay. I'm not sure when we'll be able to return to TC, but if/when we do, we'll be back here.

Amazing Location!

This was our first time using HomeAway/VRBO and we were not disappointed! Everything about Rock Shop 2 is accurately described in the description. The pictures are spot on! Bob is super quick to respond and answers any questions you might have. When we arrived to Rock Shop 2 we were blown away by the view and the location. The place itself is very clean and had everything we needed for our stay. We felt very safe while staying there, especially with the private entrance with the locking system. Bob and Becky are very gracious and have amazing recommendations for anything you might want to do! The best part of Rock Shop 2 is the location. It is perfect as it is close to the places you want to go but still far enough away from the touristy parts of the city. It is located just across the street from the bay and a couple of blocks from Front Street. You are able to walk to the bay and enjoy the beach, or get on the TART bike trail that you can enjoy for miles. Just next door are an amazing bakery and a great restaurant to enjoy breakfast and lunch. Downtown is about a 10-minute walk where there are plenty of great breweries, shops, and restaurants. We could not have asked for a better place to stay, and I would hands down recommend to stay at Rock Shop 2 rather than a hotel!

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

"Rock Shop 2" was the perfect location for our visit to Traverse City! Nearly everything we wanted to do in the city was within walking distance, and when we wanted to do further exploring it was only a very short drive. Bob and Becky's recommendation book came in very handy.

The place itself was very clean and just the right amount of space (larger than we expected, in fact). Checking in and out was a breeze. When we return to Traverse City this will be our go-to place to stay!
