Bob Dillard came to Lost River over 35 years ago to help with the development of the Lost River Valley/Mill Gap area consisting of 2400 acres. Quickly realizing that he had fallen in love with the area, he built a log home from which he managed the Tuscarora Land Co office, as well as the old Green Valley Farms Dude ranch adjacent to his property. Later he developed his log home into The Guesthouse at Lost River. From this property Bob ran several other businesses throughout the years but concentrated mainly on real estate. He has built over three hundred cabins and homes and, with his partner David and business partner Tammy, developed three subdivisions in the Lost River Valley. Although the Guesthouse at Lost River has changed hands, Bob still maintains a Real Estate office in the Lost River Subdivision.
David Mickow came to the Lost River Valley, first as a guest at The Guesthouse at Lost River. Within six months David had been bitten by the bug and moved permanently to Lost River, becoming a partner in the Guesthouse and quickly started working in real estate as well as the development of properties in the LRV. David is the expert in design, color and balance. He is the “go to” guy when you cannot deal with furniture placement or get hung up hanging up all that art work! He is the Broker for Guesthouse Realty and has extensive knowledge of LRV real estate and, very important, the provenance of these properties.
Tammy Stanley is truly a Hardy County gem and from the LRV. Born at the local clinic and from a farming family that dates back centuries. She is the glue that binds this Troika. She has worked alongside Bob since 1980 and David for almost 19 years! Tammy has been involved in Bob’s ventures from the get go, having singlehandedly run most of the Guesthouse business as well as maintaining her own Personal Touch Massage Therapy. She has run this business from the Guesthouse for over 20 years.
We look forward to our Lost River Guests
Bob, David & Tammy purchased this cottage in 2013
Location is stellar. Easy access from property via footbridge to Mill Gap for biking or running as well as direct access to gravel interior road for mountain biking or hiking Hommon Mountain adjacent to the Chalet. Only property in area with two converging streams that create a soothing background when relaxing on the deck. Easy 15 minute walk to the Lost River General Store. Only ten minute walk to a private fishing pond and hiking access to the George Washington National Forest. Less than two miles up Mill Gap towards Rock Cliff Lake is the Wolf Gap cut which is a 12 mile gravel road that is a gem for bikers who want peace, quiet and nearly non existent traffic.
If you want to spend the day in the Lost River State Park, 20 minutes away, there is a beautiful pool in a spectacular wooded setting with changing rooms and an adjacent game room for all to enjoy. Hidden Trail Stables provides an excellent and fun way to see some of the incredible views of the Lost River Valley from the back of a very well behaved horse! If you would rather hike up 'Cranny Crow' or any of the other beautiful mountain trails at the State Park, there are maps and markers as well as Park Rangers to assist. This property is within 35 minutes of a launching area for tubing or canoeing the South Branch. Located near The Guesthouse Lost River, there is the advantage of taking advantage of their 'open pool' days and poolside bar and 'Happy Hour'.
As I write about our property, and listen to the weather, I am reminded that even at 1700 ft. and located in the mountains, it still can get warm in the heat of the summer. Our property is unique in that it has central HVAC and a wonderful cool spring fed stream to put your in. Also, we offer a king bed room as well as a queen bed room for your sleeping comfort.
The swiss cottage was definitely a wonderful place to stay and get away.
Let me start with my small ‘not-so-good’ things and finish with ALL of the good things that this house has to offer. The pictures that are posted are a bit deceiving in that you can’t tell that you are relatively close to other houses. Normally when we get away, we try to stay as far from people as we can get. That being said, we didn’t really 'see' folks and the views from the cottage were spectacular... My only other complaint would be that the water is well water, so it has a ‘sulphur’ smell… Even though you could probably drink it, with the egg smell, you don’t really want to. They left a few bottles of water in the frig which was good (for coffee), but had we known before we got to the house, we would have brought more bottled water for our dogs – we think the water didn’t set well with one of them.
So, now all of the good things… The furniture was super cozy and nice to lay around on… the bed linens –pillows and sheets--were magnificent, I was trying to find the brand, so I could get some when I got home. The sun setting in the gap of the mountains was superb and the STARS-- wowsa, you can't even begin to imagine… Our dogs LOVED running around in all that space.. we, too, enjoyed walking around the space –the little stream that ran down the side, the bridge to cross over—it was all very nice.
FINALLY, I locked the door to leave on the final morning and left my cell phone inside. One of the ‘neighbors’ was nice enough to allow me to use her landline to call the owner, Bob, who met us at the house in 10 mins to let me in to get my phone… now THAT is service! We would definitely stay here again…I would have given 4.5 stars because of the water, but with the service that Bob provided in getting to us quickly, I have to make it a 5-star stay.. Thank you!!
The property was a beautiful spot with a great view of the surrounding valley. We were in town for a family wedding being held at the Guesthouse which was an easy drive up the hill away. We are looking forward to visiting Lost River again soon.
Our long weekend turned out to be exactly what we were hoping for, i.e., lots of open space for the dogs to run freely, great views and privacy. The view from the deck is amazing no matter which direction you look. It was very relaxing sitting on the deck at sunset with a glass of wine. On the inside it's very nice too. The only thing we didn't like was having to leave after only 3 days. This place is a keeper and we will definitely go back.
The two of us and our two dogs were looking for a place where we could get some much needed R&R, and Lost River Swiss fit the bill perfectly. We stayed for a week (and ended up wishing we could have stayed longer). The pictures don't do full justice to the beautiful views and the sweeping acreage.
The cottage is as pictured inside and obviously has been newly renovated. It has very comfortable couches, and much nicer linens than you'd expect in a vacation rental.
It was wonderful to sit out on the wraparound deck with our morning coffee, take in the views, and enjoy watching the dogs going 'free range' and playing on the hill just below us. They loved chasing bunnies and smelling the country smells, and their daily afternoon splash in the little creek on the property.
There are a number of restaurants with 15-20 minutes (although some aren't open earlier in the week). We had several lunches at the General Store, and great dinner and beer at the brew pub in Wardensville, along with dinner at The Guest House. (Definitely bring most groceries from home since the stores nearby are tiny.) We spent our time reading, hiking, checking out the nearby state parks, chilling out, movie-watching and golfing (golfers, try Bryce Resort in VA instead of Valley View in Moorefield;.further away but worth it-- great weekday deals via Golfnow .com).
Tammy was wonderful to deal with from start to finish, and very responsive on email when I had questions before our trip. We ended up having to have a package delivered via Fed Ex, and Bob was kind enough to let us send it to their place since we would be out that day, and he dropped it off for us.
David suggested an excellent hike from the cottage zigging and zagging up the mountain, which gave us a chance to see the outside of some of the other rentals higher up. [For us, having the 10 acres without close neighbors so the dogs could run around was worth it. The lightly traveled road on the other side of the creek does have a few more cars on weekends, but it was definitely the right trade-off for us.]
And you can't beat having a Saturday farmer's market within a three-minute walk. We came away with two full bags of fresh veggies, fruits, cheeses, baked goods...so many yummy things! The dogs also said 'paws up' to the homemade dog treats. There's even a fenced dog park area right beside the market if your dogs want to make new friends.
To sum it up...great property, great views, great owners!
Wonderful views, fresh air and a great way to spend time away from the city. Trails all around and fantastic equip modern house.
We had a wonderful weekend at the Lost River Swiss Cottage. The house comes with extra touches like shampoo and a hair dryer, and it was very clean and comfortable. And the views are spectacular! We will definitely be back.
