Built in 1927, my custom cottage, which I call Oakhaven, is full of charm, but with modern updates to make your vacation a summer breeze. It has two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with a convertible sofabed. Most of the floors are figured marble, many of the windows are stained glass. The living room has a cozy fireplace and 37' flat screen TV. The spacious dining room seats six, and the sunny full kitchen features a glass electric cooktop and wall oven, with plenty of counter space and storage. Out back the fun continues in our large fenced yard, with its beautiful ancient oak tree and lush gardens. There's a brick patio with an umbrella dining table and chairs and a barbecue grill. Enjoy using our bicycles while you explore ride the Legacy Bicycle Trail, with the trail-head just a short block away at Nokomis Center Park. The park also has tennis courts, trails and a place to launch kayaks. Our cottage is on a quiet street across from and next door to an antiques shop. There are several great shops, parks, preserves and restaurants within a short walking distance, and US 41 and I-75 are nearby for easy access to any other areas of the state.
I was born and raised here in Nokomis, directly across the street from this cottage. My parents and I have been world travelers, and for a time, I've lived in the jungles of South America. I've carried on my family's business of antiques and operate two shops here in the Nokomis Historic district, one next to Oakhaven Cottage and one across the street. I have always loved being part of this friendly community.
Eugenie Lanius purchased this cottage in 1975
When this house came up for sale in 1975, my father said that he'd restore it if I would purchase it, so we did that. He was a master craftsman who had done incredible work to our family property over the years, and he and I both saw the potential in this lovely little house. After 35 years of work and love, we are thrilled with how lovely it is.
Why vacation in an ordinary house when you can stay in a place that has a lot of charm and character? Why stay in a crowded, busy place when you can be in a historic district cottage close to everything? Why not stay in a place with a big, beautiful yard with lovely oak trees, including one with a hammock where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of Florida nature right where you're staying? Our historic district has the charm of a rural setting yet it's just blocks from US 41, 2 miles from Nokomis Beach and downtown Venice, and 3 miles from I-75 which gives you easy access to anywhere in the state.
