BRILLIANT EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful time on board the Cathy Sue. While not the newest exterior it has recently been refurbished inside and was perfect for the two of us. Located in the centre of the harbour it is so easy to get to and from, for just $5pp on the harbour craft which operates from 8am until 12pm.
We were provided with fresh water, lanterns, radio and fresh linen and enjoyed a takeaway meal with bottle of wine in such a peaceful and desirable setting.
While worth it for the experience it is also a low cost alternative to hotels and rental housing. Would definitely stay on board again, great fun! Thanks very much!

A UNIQUE, AFFORDABLE & MEMORABLE NANTUCKET EXPERIENCE!!

A Unique, Affordable & Memorable Nantucket Experience!!
  • 4 of 5
"Cathy Sue requesting launch pickup, over." ...and with that, in no more than 5 minutes, the harbor launch pulls alongside your off-shore "room" to take you into town for your on-land adventures. I've been visiting Nantucket for 40+ years. Not many places I haven't stayed, including cramped "servants' quarters" in the 80's when working in 'Sconset. I took a chance & booked Cathy Sue for 2 weeks. Wow! A new Nantucket experience for my memory book. If you're looking for the luxury yacht experience, Cathy Sue is not for you. But if you're willing to put a bit of effort towards your creature comforts, staying on this boat in Nantucket Harbor will not disappoint. Your essentials are provided: drinking water, flashlights, lanterns and a radio to call the harbor launch. Everything else is a welcome luxury. Sunrise or sunset, this is the best seat in the house. Wish I could post a few pics of my view of a previous night's full moon while facing west, & simply turning 180 degrees on deck to see the simultaneous rising of the sun. Simple living on the boat insists that you slow down; no better way to truly relax. Launch owner Mike & his staff John made the launch service easy & enjoyable. Cathy Sue was usually the last drop off, so a GREAT way to get up close & see the many beautiful boats moored in the harbor. The launch can be your biggest expense, $5 each trip, but get a punch card for $30/8 rides & save $10. Showers, restrooms & laundry facilities on dock were clean & never crowded. Cara was a wonderful & welcoming host. A great bonus she provided was the use of a bicycle during my stay. This was my island get-away-get-away: spend time w/ family & friends in town & beaches, but then return to my own space. (Beware, however, of family members with kayaks & early morning surprise visits on the water!) This is the closest thing to camping on the island as you can get. It's back to basics, but this leaves you to enjoy the view, the water & the peace & quiet. I'm a camper, have lived in a cabin in Alaska with no running water or electricity & have spent time on boats. But if you've never camped or stayed on a boat, I would recommend brushing up on some basic boat facts & you won't have any surprises. I wish I had brought two things: binoculars and a solar/battery charger for my cell phone. However, I never had trouble finding a spot to charge my phone in town. Visit town's Historic Library for free computer use & plenty of outlets for charging. Thank you Cathy Sue!

SERENITY ON THE WATER!

  • 5 of 5
I wasn't sure what to expect as a friend set me up here but I have to say was very pleased. You hop on the launch at the dock in Nantucket Harbor right where the HyLine Ferry disembarks, pay your $5 fare, and tell the captain to take you the Cathy Sue. They know exactly where it is but if for some reason they don't, the hosts leave instructions on how to find the boat. The captain does his best to get you as close to the back deck as possible but the seas can be unpredictable so you will need to have some good balance and mobility to hop from one boat to the other. I'm 45, in decent shape, and never had a problem.
The launch pulls away and you are at your home away from home. There is a deck on the back and from there, you enter the spacious cabin where you'll find a sofa bed, chair, and counter. Walk down a few stairs and there is a dinette and galley kitchen. Keep walking and the head is on the left and the v-berth is straight ahead.
I arrived to the island early and had time to kill before check in and cycled the island in the rain and by check in time, I was wet and tired and couldn't wait to get to the Cathy Sue and take a nap. I got there, familiarized myself with my surroundings and climbed into the v-berth and was pleased with how comfortable it was as the boat bobbed in the waves with the water slapping the sides of the boat. Very relaxing.
After catching up on some much needed rest, I put myself together and radioed the launch. The hosts leave a 2 way radio for just that purpose and it's already tuned to channel 68. You press the talk button and say, "harbor launch, can I have a pick up to the Cathy Sue?" and the captain will answer in the affirmative or ask you to repeat what you said. If no response, you do it again but most of the time, they answered on the first try. Important! Be completely ready to go when you make the call as the launch can take 10 seconds to 15 minutes to get to you and you don't want to make them wait or that would be rude. The launch captains are consummate professionals but have a lot of pick ups and drop offs so you don't want to make them wait. Make sure you have proper gear. On my first night, it was rainy and choppy so I wore my rain coat and was glad I did as it was a pretty wet ride. Nothing tragic, just be prepared.
The first morning I woke up, I was treated to the spectacular view that is Nantucket Harbor and frankly, I didn't want to get off. I enjoyed going up on the bridge and reading. Very Nice!
