Overview

Clinton Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3-4)

Thinking about a vacation rental on South Whidbey Island? Welcome to our homestead flower farm!

Our cottage is located on Maxwelton Road in the beautiful Maxwelton Valley, 2 miles from Maxwelton beach and close to artsy Langley. This area is one of the most sought after real estate regions on the island, and you will see why! It is quiet and lovely bike riding country where you will likely see wild geese, osprey, ducks, bald eagles, alpacas and other farm animals, sweeping views, homesteads to dream for, and majestic old cedars and firs in lush mixed forest and meadows. Maxwelton Beach, just up the road, is known for its long stretches of walkable sandy beach and westerly views for spectacular sunsets with the Olympic mountains as a majestic backdrop. A great place to drop in a kayak too!

Rustic chic, simple and romantic, our beautiful large space (768 sq ft) is divided into kitchen, bath and one large room. Picture windows look out onto gardens and cedars. High vaulted ceilings with skylights, wood stove, all the basic kitchen necessities to cook your own meals and delicious, clean well water. Wake up in a comfy, 4-poster Queen bed with 100% organic cotton sheets and comforter (divided from the living room by a screen), a stand of regal cedars your view. We also have a pull-out twin bed for a guest or child and an additional futon if needed. Relax in the living room, with TV/DVD, a good book or journal and a smile. Fresh flowers in season grace the space.

Outside, roam our 5 acres of woods and gardens, sit on the chair swing, listen to the birds, take a bike ride or a hike at nearby Whidbey Institute-a 100 acre nature preserve. Simply RELAX.

About Kathryn OBrien

Our family moved to Whidbey Island to alternatively educate our children at the Waldorf School over 10 years ago, trusting all would be well. My husband and I were professional yoga teachers and our dream was to operate a yoga studio on our own land and to build a homestead. As life often dictates, not all went as planned:) Our oldest son made it clear that Waldorf education was NOT for him, our 'Yoga Sanctuary' turned out to be unsustainable, and my husband is still thinking that maybe homesteading and owning all this land is way too much work! Yet, here we still are...everytime we try to leave the island for a 'vacation' we realize how GOOD we have it at home. This beauty and community is hard to beat; we are so fortunate.

New development! In late summer of 2013, Kathryn was offered a temporary job at Kauai Community College teaching Sustainable Agriculture for 2-3 years...guess where the family is now? In Hawaii!! However...there are amazing new hosts at the homestead, the Weidendorf family of four.

Kathryn OBrien purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Kathryn OBrien chose Clinton

Cedar Moon Cottage has much history (see our website for more background). It was the original homestead house on the property, and housed a family of 8 in the 1930's. For us, it became the 'Yoga Sanctuary' , offering yoga and tai chi classes, spiritually-based workshops by visiting teachers and a space for community talking circles and dances. Today, infused with good-energy, it is a living space for relaxed rejuvenation, simple comfort and an affordable vacation.

What makes this cottage unique

Maxwelton Valley is the heart of South Whidbey Island. You are nestled in with the locals here, close enough to Maxwelton Beach or Langley (less than 10 minutes in opposite directions), yet far enough away to feel the real island vibe and be held by its beauty. You will hardly see a soul walking the enchanted Whidbey Institute trails and the further you get down Maxwelton Beach, the more isolated and in tune with nature you become. How about a night walk up Quade road along the creek? We might not be on beach front, but Yes, we have a slice of paradise here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A perfect cottage for the dream getaway we wanted. Quiet, private and well priced. Unique and fun activities nearby, great hiking and a fully stocked kitchen to make wonderful meals. Would return in a heartbeat, but for longer next time.

Sweet and cosy

  • 5 of 5
A very cute little cabin in the middle of some huge cedar trees. Special touches with games and great books. Small, but perfect for the two of us, great bed and linens.

This is actually one long room with a small divider to create a "bedroom". I am not sure how it could sleep four, there is a fold up bed but it looked small. Maybe they are counting the couch? I would have appreciated some better hanger space, there is no closet, just a dressing cabinet. Used products in the bathroom was a bit odd. No soap or shampoo.

quiet country hideaway

We stayed in this cabin two nights over Thanksgiving weekend and it was very cozy. It sits in front of the "big house" in a grove of towering firs. It's quirky, with some of the walls not meeting the ceiling (obviously a remodeled something or other) but comfortable. You enter through a wood floored kitchen/dining room area that has a generously sized wooden table looking out onto a grassy area and apple trees. The bathroom is off the dining room. Through a beaded curtain is the spacious living room/bedroom with a very large couch that easily seated us and two big dogs (we brought lots of throws...). At first the room was chilly but space heaters and a wood burning fireplace quickly heated it up. There are plenty of quilts and blankets and extra pillows for the bed. We left the windows open at night and heard a barred owl calling nearby. We didn't see the owners while we were there but caught glimpses of them so we knew they were available if we had a problem. They also had dogs but they called them in whenever we were outdoors on the way to our car so we never actually met the two dogs although they appeared to be friendly. Langley and the beach are nearby so this is a good place for solitude with forays into town to windowshop.

Mom with kids

  • 5 of 5
I stayed here with my two children and dog. The owners were wonderful. Very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable about the island. The house was just as described and well stocked with all the things one would need. There was a large bouquet of flowers from the garden on the table for us when we arrived. My kids loved seeing the chickens and looking around in the garden. Would definitely recommend staying here!

Great getaway cabin in a quiet, parklike setting!

  • 4 of 5
If you are looking for a quiet, secluded getaway cabin on south Whidbey Island, put this cabin on your list. Cozy, comfortable and convenient, this small cabin offers a full kitchen and big open living room / bedroom (separated by a small screen to afford some privacy), and small bathroom with a shower.

If you are there during cooler weather, be prepared to start a fire in the wood stove, as the two electric radiator heaters provided will take a while to heat the space by themselves. But that will only add to the rustic country charm of this place, as you practice your boy scout (or girl scout) skills of fire starting!

As far as access to the rest of the island, you are just off a main road for a 10-minute trip into the quaint town of Langley which features great restaurants for your dining pleasure, coffee shops and bakeries, some interesting stores, a book store and even a theater for seeing a movie.

And the main Island highway, 525, is also close at hand in case you want to travel north to Freeland, Coupeville or Oak Harbor. Driving any roads on Whidbey will bring you scenery that will restore your soul, so you should definitely consider the Cedar Moon Cabin for your stay on the Island, if you are looking for a great escape!

Go! Enjoy! Relax! You won't regret it!

Mother daughter get away.

  • 5 of 5
My daughter and I had a wonderful time at Ceder Moon Cottage. It had everything we needed for a great get away. Kathryn was very helpful and friendly in communicating and was willing to do anything to make our stay comfortable. The location is extremely quiet and beautiful....we had fun wandering the grounds and looking at the vegetable garden and flowers. Sunny the dog is friendly and welcoming. :) The cottage is decorated with taste, comfortable and very clean with a well stocked kitchen. Especially appreciated a nice cozy bed at the end of a long day of hiking. We really had everything we needed. We would highly recommend this cottage and will be back again. Thank you Kathryn!!!

Map

Cedar Moon Herb and Flower Farm began as a small farm enterprise selling roadside bouquets to local neighbors years ago. The land is blessed with many cedar trees and a myriad of other rich native species. When the full moon light shines through the cedars, and the owls call to one another; it is an enchanted land indeed. Each year, perennial gardens were added and in 2009, the 3 1/2 acres of farmland next door was purchased with good friends, Britt and Eric Conn. Together, a little bit of everything was going on....forest gardening, permaculture techniques, mushroom production, solar heated hot water, organic vegetables, new fruit trees, chicken tractors, ducks, turkeys, community gatherings and of course...lots of FLOWERS!

Then, in early 2013, Britt and Eric and their new baby son Kai, bought the 3 1/2 acres outright ending the 'commercial scale' flower production phase of Cedar Moon Farm and beginning a full- scale organic farming lifestyle for the Conn family. Their farm is called Full Cycle Farm; they are the best neighbors in the world, and we wish them huge success and happiness! Please support them by buying their produce at the farmstand...a short walk through the woods next to the cottage.
