Owners Terry and Lori Backlund have been married since August 2007. Both have had long family histories that tie them to Grand Marais. Terry is co-founder of Sven and Ole's and current owner/broker of Backlund Realty. After a long career with General Motors, Lori finally made her move to Grand Marais.
We both enjoy skiing, tennis, golf and most of all, riding our Harleys.
Grand Marais has a unique vibe rarely found in a town of this size. Grand Marais places a premium on culture. The community's Arrowhead Center for the Arts hosts performances ranging from locally produced plays to national recording artists. The renowned North House Folk School attracts students from across the country with its curriculum of folk arts and crafts and construction skills. Founded in 1947, the Grand Marais Art Colony is the oldest art colony in the state. The Johnson Heritage post has continuous showings of works by local and regional artists.
Ella's Inn is only two to four blocks from most attractions including great dining, shopping and picturesque harbor views.
The historical significance paired with the location makes Ella's Inn the perfect place to call home while in Grand Marais.
The guests at Ella's Inn have access to all amenities of the home. A fully equipped kitchen allows guests to dine in or enjoy fresh morning coffee. Relax and share stories of the day's adventures around the outdoor fire ring while toasting marshmallows.
"I'm so glad I discovered Ella's Inn on VRBO. In the loveliest possible way, it feels like we're Goldilocks and the Three Bears who walked into someone else's house while the owners stepped out for just a moment. Honestly, staying at Ella's Inn is like staying at your second home - even if you didn't realize you had one until you walked in! It is immaculate, whimsical, eclectic, homey and oh-so-complete."
Ella's Inn is a wonderful eclectic immaculate kept Inn! All rooms are spacious with fresh clean linens on the comfy beds and plenty of towels etc. for a house full! Fully stocked kitchen, was a plus! (Incase you want to cook some or all of meals there) It is only a block and 1/2 from town and makes it easy to walk to and from. Never having to use your car. You can sit and enjoy the flowers on the front stoop, or a shady garden on the side. At night if you aren't pooped from site seeing you can sit by a roaring fire in the back yard. The owners Terry and Lori make you feel right at home and don't care that you and your family are loud when playing games at night! I would stay at Ella's again. I had family that stayed in town and they wished they had reserved a room at Ella's. Thank you Lori and Terry for opening up your home to our family. We had a great time!
Seven of us stayed at Ella’s place for the first time at the end of February. We found it charmig, very clean, comfortable and walking distance to town. We would recommmend it and come back!
Clearly outside of their control, but it was about -15 degrees but we had fun anyway.
My husband and I have spent our honeymoon and every anniversary after in Grand Marais. On our 25th we decided we wanted to bring our four kids, our son in law and our three grandsons along. Ella's was perfect for us. As we entered the house Friday evening the 5 year old shouted "This place is awesome." He couldn't have been more right. It was clean, it was homey and everything we needed was provided. The grandsons and some of the adults even played hide and seek Saturday evening. The 7 year old asked if we were going to do this again next year. Not a bad idea.
I was one of a group of 7 women who grew up together and chose Ella's Inn as this year's gathering place. From the moment we walked in the front door, we knew we had the perfect venue for our weekend. Ella's is cozy, but spacious, clean, comfortable, well furnished; an easy walk to downtown Grand Marais & a comfortable drive to area sites and trails. We will be back, and highly recommend this owner-friendly cottage.
What an outstanding time we had at Ella's. 7 of us (just turning 60 this year) have been getting together almost every year since 1984 and Ella's was voted best place to stay by all. Shopping, sightseeing, hiking, reminiscing and catching up - a wonderful crisp fall weekend! Ella's was more than we expected, charming, clean, comfortable, a well equipped kitchen and Lori and Terry were great hosts inviting us to feel at home. We thought it looked like a cute little place when we found it online.....we had NO idea how really ideal it would be. We can't wait to go back someday! Thank you so much for your hospitality!
My mom was so sweet to treat my daughters and I to a fun few days in Grand Marais at Ella's Inn. It is a short walk to Angry Trout, North Folk School, downtown and the shoreline. The Local Art hung throughout the house is so beautiful and adds so much to the charm of your stay. We all kept trying to figure out how to buy the place and live there forever. Would highly recommend, but kind of also want to keep it to ourselves as we just don't want to share! Thank you so much for blessing us with your home!
