Tucson Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Tucson Glass Cottage: open-concept living in the desert

This architect-designed original home was completed in early 2013. High sloping ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, polished concrete floors, custom poured concrete feature walls, bamboo drop ceilings, beautiful recessed lighting and myriad 'Architectural Digest' touches make this the perfect spot for the discerning traveller seeking an urbane hideaway in the Sonoran desert.

The panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass walls mean you will be completely in touch with the desert landscape. Saguaros and other cacti surround you. Quail, rabbits, javelinas, coyotes may wander by. You will wake up on the bedroom to the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains to the east and can view the sunset over the Tucson Mountains from the dining area.

Covered quartzite stone decks facing both west and east. Acacia chairs and table on the east deck, bistro table and chairs on the sunset deck. Lounge chairs for sunny afternoons. Driveway parking for one car, a second car can be parked in a pull-out immediately across from the Cottage.

One half of the Glass Cottage has a Poliform queen size bed; Wassily-style chairs and a Frank Ghery cocktail table and 'Wiggle Chair' in the sitting area facing a working acorn fireplace; dressing room with ample drawers and hanging space; huge two-person glass shower with stone floor and stunning views to the west; vanity area with bamboo sink on cantilevered concrete counter; and a separate and fully enclosed toilet room. Facing east, you will wake up facing the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains.

A few feet away across a covered breezeway, the other half of the Glass Cottage contains the fully equipped kitchen with beautiful tiled countertops; a custom-designed trestle oak dining (or work) table, with 6 chairs; a Danish swivel reading chair and Damson reading lamp; and a leather flip-down sofa, ideal for an afternoon nap. Facing west, you'll be treated to the sun setting over the Tucson Mountains as you prepare dinner.

Tucson Glass Cottage shares 3.3 acres with only the owner's residence, some 100 yards away and oriented to ensure privacy for both homes. The Cottage is accessed by a private gravel road, shared only by the owner's home. The acreage is in the center of a group of 6 similarly large plots, far from traffic.

This is the perfect spot for an individual or couple seeking real tranquility and a touch of luxury in a magical desert setting. Yet an easy drive into the University area, downtown, and into the magnificent Saguaro National Park.

True Desert Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Glass Cottage (GC) for the entire month of March in 2015. It was our best VRBO experience in Tucson. We had stayed in others places during our previous visits and they were all fine, but the GC was a true special experience.

1) Great location. The GC is a quick drive to shopping areas, particularly the streets of W Ina and N Oracle, full of endless shops. It is also a few minutes drive to the Sonora Desert Museum and nearby parks. Downtown is about 10-12 minute drive.

2) The environment surrounding the GC. As soon as you drive onto the private road to the GC, you are immediately surrounded by giant cacti and other desert plants. It is peaceful and private. The only occasional visitors are coyotes, javelinas, rabbits and birds.

3) Description of the GC. The building is actually two separate buildings/rooms, the kitchen and the bedroom, connected in the middle. It feels much bigger than 950 sq.ft. The ceilings are high for both rooms. You get great views from both rooms in every angle. Unlike a conventional building, which encloses or separates you from your immediate environment once you are in it, the GC blends you with your environment. The inside and the outside are like one. I often felt as if we were "camping" in a modern room. The best views for me were the moments each morning when I woke up and looked out of the glass walls/windows. The views were magically beautiful, no matter what time and what sunlight! I indeed looked forward to each morning's awakening.

The pictures of the GC on the VRBO website are actual representations. What you see is what you get. The GC practically has everything you need, from kitchen and laundry equipment to various daily necessities.

4) The owner and the manager. We met the owner Jim and had a quite pleasant chat with him, a friendly guy. The manager, Carella, who lives minutes away, was very helpful whenever we needed anything. She was the one who greeted us at the door when we arrived, and the one who said goodbye to us when we were leaving. Both Carella and Jim were invisible but present when we needed them.

In short, we had a great time staying at the Glass Cottage and will definitely return and whole heartedly recommend the GLass Cottage to anyone who wants a true desert experience in Tucson.

Thanks, Jim and Carella!

We will treasure the memories of our stay in the glass cottage. We loved the Tucson area and the location of the cottage is private and convenient at the same time. The owner and the manager were both great and we thank them. If any one is looking for a unique, special desert retreat this is it !!

Diamond in the Rough

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at the glass cottage during our time in Tucson to perform and celebrate our marriage. There is no way to describe the awe that occurs when you first roll up to the property - it is aesthetically breathtaking. We took the time to wander around both buildings that comprise the entire home and explore the surrounding desert landscape before moving in.

Once we started arranging our personal belongings we realized how completely functional the space is. There are more than enough hidden storage areas to hold your items and avoid cluttering the beautiful space. We appreciated the fireplace being in the bedroom and made sure to take advantage of it every evening. The shower makes it very fun to get cleaned up because it provides the allusion of being outside in the desert. Waking up to the sunrise every morning was more peaceful that the grievance that an alarm causes.

There is a Fry’s grocery store, Walgreens, multiple retail necessities, and even an Eegie’s within a 5 minute drive. Make sure to buy groceries and make use of the fully equipped kitchen. There is a coffee maker, French press, grinder, juicer, pots/pans, dinnerware, silverware, grill & accessories, oven, stove, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator/freezer, and MORE. There is no better place to spend breakfast, lunch, and dinner than the spot facing East and designated separately from the bedroom. We even brought a guitar and must say that the acoustics in BOTH halves of the home were absolutely incredible.

Make sure you take a stroll around the property. You have a generous amount of space to do so without intruding on the neighbors. The area is full of exotic plants and you feel as if you are taking a tour through the desert botanical gardens. Thank you for creating this space so that folks like us are able to experience a true architectural piece of art surrounded by beautiful views of the Catalina Mountains.

Sunrise, Sunset: Inside and Out a Beautiful Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

This morning was the first morning in 7 days that we have not awoken to the sunrise colouring the Arizona sky. The view from the incredibly comfortable bed at the Glass Cottage was a joy every single morning. We have been travelling in a VW Westfalia for the past six months (www.folksblogen.com) which means we have been living in our van, always with a different incredible landscape surrounding us. The Glass Cottage was a perfect transition from our bright and airy van because the glass walls of the cottage nearly erase the line between inside and out except that we were always comfortable no matter the temperature outdoors. One might think that people travelling in a simple van for six months would be quite easy to please but truthfully we will not just stay anywhere...we are pretty picky. We truly enjoyed cooking and dining in this beautiful space while enjoying the mountains, skyline, saguaro and other cacti of the surrounding desert. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again or to recommend the Glass Cottage to our friends and family. We are grateful that James was able to squeeze us into his otherwise full calendar. We miss the Glass Cottage!!

When a house is more than a roof over your head

  • 5 of 5

The Glass Cottage is an extraordinary find. More than a cottage, it is an exquisite fusion of space, light, design and taste. We’ve been devotees of VRBO’s for some time. This is once-in-your-life place. Sited in the desert, but easily accessible, the Glass Cottage is splendidly appointed. It’s elegant, minimal and hospitable at the same time. It was like being suspended in the desert with nothing to interrupt your experience of its essence. We never failed to get a slight rush when we approached this delightful set of glass prisms at dusk. There is no more beautiful place watch the sun sink (or rise.) The sky, stars, mountains, cacti, quail, are as visible from the inside as the outside.

The interior is just as compelling, only a different composition, and an exquisite complement to the natural habitat. The choices of color, texture, shapes, materials, are stylish without being pretentious.

The owner and his caretaker manage to be invisibly attentive. Their presence is manifested in the front end, before you arrive. They epitomize the reasons why we love to rent from owners. I would recommend the Glass Cottage as an integral part of anyone's vacation experience.

Too many superlatives can call the credibility of a review into question. But we can’t invent a negative. Seldom has the physical design of our living environment made such a positive impact on a holiday.

You will wake up on the bedroom to the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains to the east and can view the sunset over the Tucson Mountains from the dining area.
