This year-round vacation home (1,800 square feet) has been in our family for three generations. It has an exceptional location on a private peninsula with 1,500 feet of water frontage. Every room of the house has stunning views of Lake Hamilton. The main house has three bedrooms (a queen, a double, and a single with two single beds), and two baths. The kitchen and bathrooms (both with showers, no tub) were renovated in 2011. The living room and west bedroom were renovated in 2013. There is a gated private drive with plenty of parking. The long shoreline supports a variety of wildlife. You are likely to see great blue heron, ducks, geese, cormorants. The lake is stocked, and the deeper waters just off the south shore are considered some of the best fishing on the lake. There is a public boat launch a hundred feet from our driveway, and the property has a dock as well as a raft.
Each season provides special vacation opportunities; swimming, boating, fishing, fall foliage, ice fishing and skiing. There are also activities and events weekly at Old
No Smoking in the buildings.

We are three siblings (Zabby, John, and Robin) who are sharing the family project of renting 'The Peni' where we spent all our childhood summers swimming, boating, fishing, playing with cousins, and riding our pony. Zabby runs a study program in Paris for a New England prep school, John is a retired teacher, and Robin is a lawyer. Both John and Robin live in Holland near 'The Peni'.
Elizabeth Scott, Peni rentals, Lucie Satkowski purchased this house in 1926
In 1926, our grandparents acquired a part interest in 'The Peni' when they purchased the hill just to the west of it. They quickly realized it was an ideal swimming place. At the time, there were no other 'camps' on the lake. They went to great lengths to acquire the remaining shares of this extraordinary spot, and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have benefited ever since. It continues to be a favorite place for the family to gather for swimming, boating, and family reunions.
Swimming, boating, fishing, privacy, space, wildlife, and bird life. The long, convoluted shoreline of 'The Peni' provides many swimming spots as well as places to explore. There are lovely walks in every direction including into the Quinebaug Woods, formerly part of the family property, now owned by Trustees of the Reservation and open to the public. There is a wide variety of fine dining in nearby Sturbridge.
This rental was the first for the entire family together and it was amazing! Accommodations were perfect and offered a truly rejuvenating experience for all ages! We are kayakers and brought (5) with us along with the canoe provided- was perfect. Setting was ideal and offered much to each of us. It was the first time I had ever seen my son-in-law truly relax and gave the youngest member (age 3) many "first" experiences. Luci the manager was thorough, professional and friendly! Can't thank them all enough!!
I spent 3 nights at Peni with my 3 young children, ages 9, 7 and 2. It was REALLY cold and wet for the end of May but we still had a very enjoyable time. And we didn't even go anywhere because I am 8 months pregnant and just wanted to lay around! We did bring PDF's, although there is one at the house, and we enjoyed the dock and canoe very much. The canoe is aluminum and so I had no worries about damaging it, or allowing the 9 yr old out by himself. The house is situated so that there are water views from both sides of the rooms. It does feel private, but not isolated. There is a nice inlet set up for swimming, sanded, with a float to swim out to, and bench seating, There is also a fire ring, and we toasted marshmallows. The interior of the house is a nice mix of updated-- kitchen, laundry, pretty dining area-- and older "camp-style" house. The layout is nice for families, there is some cable tv channels, and the wireless capability allowed us to stream movies from Netflix with just a few hiccups. John was very kind when booking the reservation and he was unconcerned about my diffident arrival estimate. He came by to show us the house and it was obvious that he and his family have a lot of pride in the house-- his parents house-- and they really want their renters to enjoy their stay. The older kids were both asking to come back the next weekend, which shows how nice the house and property are, as the temperature did not get above 52 degrees and it rained a lot of the time.
Rented the Peni for a girls' weekend to celebrate my 30th birthday. It was a great central location for friends from NYC, Boston, Burlington and Portland, ME.
John was incredibly accommodating and welcoming from the moment I submitted my inquiry about the property on VRBO. It was refreshing to interact with someone who cares so much about both the property and the experience of the renters. The Peni is a well-loved, cozy lakehouse, with very comfortable sleeping and updated bathrooms. The kitchen is also well stocked and renovated - was fun and easy to cook big meals in. Lots of outdoor lakeside spots to lounge in the sun -- the swimming hole is adorable and gets great afternoon sunlight. It's not a huge peninsula, but there is a lot to explore. We also really loved taking out the canoe and making fires in the outdoor firepit.
All in all, a great spot to get away from the bustling city and reconnect with old friends! We hope to make it back someday soon.
We were able to secure a 3 day weekend on short notice. John was very accommodating to our schedule and provided a top notch experience, The renovations are very nicely done and enhance the cottage. We loved Wilbur, the great blue heron, Bucky the beaver, Mr. And Mrs. Quakers the ducks. The private getaway was perfect for our family. The fall foliage and wilderness experience was excellent. We enjoyed the canoe ride very much. Thanks for having us.
Our family was warmly welcomed and cared for by John, our fascinating host!. Can't thank him and his siblings enough for sharing their "Peni" with us. Our grandparents once had a cottage on this lake and this vacation not only brought our family together, but also renewed the fondest memories of our childhoods.
The location is unparalleled. Nearly island-like on beautiful clean Hamilton Reservoir, private with a huge variety of flora, fauna and terrain, swimming, views, and a rambling cottage... this is just the start of the list of good things you will enjoy. Everyday was something new to see and appreciate.
The new bathrooms, kitchen, breakfast/dining nook, and a large library all add to the atmosphere that is sure to get you unwound and relaxed. We highly recommend the "Peni" and look forward very much to coming again!
This property is not just well maintained, it is receiving ongoing updates and enhancements. The two bathrooms are new. The kitchen is great to work in and all appliances are modern. A new bay window was added to the eating area facing out onto the lake.
The owners provided remarkable responsiveness and hospitality. There were items we were planning to bring to use in the kitchen and the owners bought them so we could travel lighter! Thank you!
Because this is such a beautiful location and accommodated guests of all ages (3 - 82 in our case), we look forward to renting the property again...
