About Donna LaHue

Now retired we have settled near Big Sky, Montana. We enjoy the contrast between our home here in the Rocky Mountains and the lush, tropical setting of Wai Opae by the sea. Both homes allow us to live connected with the natural environment and play hard.

Donna LaHue purchased this house in 2010

Why Donna LaHue chose Kapoho

After many years visiting the Big Island we finally found just the right spot to build our island getaway. Wai Opae is a unique place; off the beaten path in a friendly community of year round residents and visitors. Situated on the edge of the beautiful marine preserve, we enjoy fabulous snorkeling every day!!

What makes this house unique

Wai Opae is all about restoring the spirit, body and soul. There is something about living (or vacationing) on the edge of this island, in the shadow of an active volcano, that keeps us in touch with Hawaii as the ancients knew and loved it. Located in rural Puna district Wai Opae is the a great starting point for adventures around the island!

5 stars

A wonderful place to relax and reconnect with nature. The accommodation was in a great shape and clean.

Tide pools were 3 minutes, walking distance, from the house. They were filled with sea-life, always calm, and safe for swimming (during any weather). Green, lush, colorful rain forest.

The town (Pahoa) offers everything a traveler might needed (food, souvenirs, entertainment, gas, etc.)

ADVICE: Please don't leave anything valuable in your vehicle (rent car) while parking anywhere by road . Unfortunately, even paradise is occupied by individuals who will 'make living' by stealing. That's the world we live in.

Thank you Mitzi for a warm welcome, and thank you Donna for making this trip easy to book and find.

We have a ton of wonderful memories!!!

Excellent Kapoho rental just steps from tidepools

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at several Kapoho rentals, but overall this has been our favorite. The house has a great kitchen, beautiful bamboo floors, and lots of space. The provided washer/dryer, outdoor shower, and snorkeling gear are all useful before/after tidepool visits. The owners and the property manager were friendly and very responsive when we had questions.

Thank you for a great week!

Perfect Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house. It is very clean, well equipped, comfortable beds, one of which is even on the lanai, outdoors (and I used it).

It is very spacious with a tropical garden around. The best thing perhaps is the closeness to the champagne ponds which allow fantastic snorkeling - we went there almost every morning, just a few steps away, no car needed and exceptional snorkeling - many fish and beautiful corals, probably the best on our entire trip.

Texas yellow rose on the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

Texas gem in Hawaii. We arrived late in the evening tired from a full day of travel into a beautiful lighted home awaiting us with fresh flowers and a welcome note on the entry table.Thank you Mitzi for the extra touches. This home is everything that it is described to be and more. The pictures are accurate but everything is even better when you get there. The owners care and pride for their island home is apparent throughout their home. We were extremely pleased with our stay at this rental property especially the cleanliness and order throughout the home. i made sure my family left it as nice and orderly as we found it. The owners Donna and Jack were a pleasure to rent from they responded to my questions and e-mails promptly and even gave me tips about staying in their area. If you are considering renting this home it is amazing if you are already on the calendar I envy you! A big TEXAS thank you from the Soria family. Mahalo

A little slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here in July of 2013. The property is exactly as pictured, clean and comfortable. The owner was so helpful at providing information for our stay. The house is centrally located in Kapoho. Close to lava, tide pools and the jungle. Everyday was an adventure. If you go to Kapoho with children keep in mind that is not a tourist destination. My family loved this. We were 45 minutes from Volcano National Park, 5 minutes from the Lava boat tour and walking distance to the tide pools. I am giving this property 5 stars but feel that the following things need to be known. The house during our stay was very buggy. Screens were ripped and torn but not unsightly. We had many geckos in our house everyday. Personally my kids loved trying to catch them. There were no Mosquitos and my son slept outside every night during our stay. I mentioned the bugs because you are in a jungle and if that isn't your thing then you should consider that. Also, the property manager was not very helpful. She was out of town during our stay and showed up 15 minutes before checking out. Also, we were here during a hurricane that turned a tropical storm. The property mangers comment to me about proving emergency evacuation information was "well your're from the Carolina's so you should be familiar". I was speechless. This house is on cement pillars next to the ocean. There is a potential for flooding and your car washing away. There is one page about Tsunamis in the guest book but not helpful. We had no power for one day and there many trees down that did get quickly cleared. It was a little terrifying to get a warning from the Red Cross about emergency shelters For your location. We called the property manager several times and she was slow to return our calls and had left the Island to go to Maui. I thought this was poor service. As far as the tide pools go they are amazing and one of a kind. They we're clean at high tide and no health issues for us. We did wear water shoes and shirts. The area is known for a hippy feel and there were several occasions at the tide pools where there less savory folk drinking and smoking pot. They were harmless and this is the kind of feel you get in Puna District. Overall these things made for a lot discussion with our kids and believe this part of the Island is so rare and unique and that made for an interesting trip. The house itself, the location and the owner make this property a gem to stay at. Dreaming of return in the future.
