Now retired we have settled near Big Sky, Montana. We enjoy the contrast between our home here in the Rocky Mountains and the lush, tropical setting of Wai Opae by the sea. Both homes allow us to live connected with the natural environment and play hard.

Donna LaHue purchased this house in 2010

After many years visiting the Big Island we finally found just the right spot to build our island getaway. Wai Opae is a unique place; off the beaten path in a friendly community of year round residents and visitors. Situated on the edge of the beautiful marine preserve, we enjoy fabulous snorkeling every day!!

Wai Opae is all about restoring the spirit, body and soul. There is something about living (or vacationing) on the edge of this island, in the shadow of an active volcano, that keeps us in touch with Hawaii as the ancients knew and loved it. Located in rural Puna district Wai Opae is the a great starting point for adventures around the island!

The house was just as advertised. There were no surprises, except on the up-side. Being so close to the tide pools is a real plus and having the loft and the back porch for the kids to sleep or relax in meant peace for the adults. The house and property were in great condition and everything worked. We would definately recommend this house to our friends. We like this location because it doesn't get much rain compared to Hilo, it's peaceful, and close great snorkeling at Wai Opae and in Hilo. Quaint Pahoa is only ten minutes away, and Keaau is only 30 minutes away and has all the necessary shops for supplies.

We are very grateful we had the opportunity to stay at your home...it is absolutely beautiful, everything we were hoping for! We live in Ka'u and I had a friend visiting from Austin. We loved sitting on the lanai, enjoying a cup of coffee and feeling the trade winds...very peaceful and relaxing. My two year old son also loved it! We are already planning our next trip, mahalo!

Great property off the beaten path

Our familiy spent two weeks there in the early summer. Fifty yards from the tide pools, yet private and tucked away, this was the perfect property for us. The sleeping lanai was dreamy, and there was plenty of room for the family. The Puna area is great, and although it rains a lot, it is mostly a tropical pattern at that time of year where the rain comes in late in the day to cool it down. Totally a great rhythm. Would definitely rent again and highly recommend for families with children gaining the confidence to snorkel in a pristine and safe environment. Those tide pools were as good as snorkelling as there is anywhere on the island.

Great!

This home was great! I must say the bed was so comfortable in the master bedroom, best mattress I have ever slept on. What kind was it? I was a little concerned that the frogs would keep me awake but happily that was not the case. Also the warnings on the net about the tidal ponds were not evident while we were there! There was 6 inches of rain the night we arrived followed by high surf so they got a good cleaning. That rain drained away quickly from the yard. The house being that tall provided lots of privacy and we enjoyed both lanais. It was clean and was as advertised. The owner responded in a timely way to our emails. Caretaker also responsive to our calls and checked in with us when we happened to be on the street leaving for our daily outings.
