Vera was born in Wyola, Montana on the Crow Indian Reservation. Vera’s mother Dorothy Williams owned an Inn in Wynla and father Francis Marian Williams worked for the railway system in Montana. Vera visited Hollywood and was in the process of establishing her career, at the time she married Dr. Effrus Freeman, an ophthalmologist to the stars.
In Hollywood, Vera worked at the telephone company doing secretarial work and then designed networks for wired music stations. She had a blind date with an eye specialist and that changed her life immediately. She resigned from her job and still hadn’t given up her dreams of being a movie star, but Dr Freemans said, “What do you want to do that for? I’ll give you everything.”
Mr. Freeman always wanted to come east. On a rainy day in 1953, Dr. Freeman visited Calvert County, Mr. Louis Goldstein introduced him to the eight hundred acres that was then Bancroft Estates. Vera renamed the estate White Sands and added three hundred more acres to develop the White Sands Community. When they first came here it was nothing but trees. In 1954, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman put a club house with white sand and palm trees. It was private for about 25 years. After that they opened it to the public and had the yachting club. That’s when there was nothing down at Solomons and the docks were successful. Tit was the only deep-water marina in Calvert County. Vera created White Sands Yacht Club with more than 100 boat slips on St Leonard Creek and St John’s Creek and also had a permit to put in 24 more slips.
Vera was inspired by Indian Casinos. She wanted White Sands to be another world filled with palm and banana trees. A getaway destination, where you can forget a hectic day and enjoy the beautiful view. Vera loved everything to be exotic, from the custom built leopard bar stools and herself.
Vera and her husband would travel the world and furnished the house and restaurant with souvenirs. After Mr. Freeman Died in 1980, Vera traveled on her own.
Vera loved her costumes. She would have her gowns made from Indian saris that she would find on her travels, She would have her seamstress make her the most beautiful dresses. She liked to dress up every night and entertain whoever came to dine.
In June 2006, Vera became a guest in her own domain. Vera’s Beach Club was reopened by neighbors Steve Stanley and Lisa DelRicco. On that date, Vera was honored by imprinting her hands in wet cement to mark her lifetime of luxury at Vera’s White Sands. Vera stated. “I didn’t find it like this 41 years ago. I made it this way.”
The things that Vera loved the most;
1. Her house in Hollywood
2. Her 58-foot Hatteras motor yacht she would travel to Florida and the Caribbean Islands.
3. 1960 Silver Cloud Rolls-Royce
