About The Owner

The owner, Bruce, was a factory worker, logger, newspaper reporter, PR flunkie, and unpublished fiction writer before he discovered computers and lost all interest in reality. He spent 12 years in a computer fog, but gave it all up to move to the Silver City area in 1999. He is now in recovery, but does find time to manage an office building and a few other business projects in town.

The Owner purchased this house in 1999

Why The Owner chose Silver City

Bruce lived in this beautiful house for five years before turning it into a vacation rental. If you don't book it, he probably will. It's a sacred place that he likes to share with others.

What makes this house unique

This is the next to last house on the phone and electric lines. Beyond us are a couple of tiny communities and a hundred miles of wilderness. The nearest mall is about 90 miles away. It's a little inconvenient to get here, but worth the trouble.

Perfect for our stay

  • 5 of 5

The house was nicely decorated and very secluded. It is a perfect place to get away from it all. We weren't left for wanting much. They do not provide toiletries and the charging for extra people was a new charge for me that I find hard to justify. However the owners were very responsive when we had a house repair issue.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to share your comments! It is always gratifying to hear that our efforts provided an enjoyable experience for our guests. Sorry about the wind blowing the screen out of the window but glad we were able to get it back in for you quickly. Yes, we do follow a common practice in the lodging industry of charging for extra guests over a set number. This compensates for the extra time to set up, clean up, the use of extra linens and the extra costs associated with the use of utilities (water, electric, etc.). Safe and happy travels! We hope they will once again give us the pleasure of being your host at Agave Ridge Retreat!

The home was beautiful, spacious, and a perfect location. The kids enjoyed hiking and 'rock climbing' in the back yard. It was the perfect getaway!

The most restful vacation I've ever had

  • 5 of 5

This home was everything it was billed to be and then some. It's VERY secluded...so secluded in fact that we drove past the cutoff for it two or three times before we found it. However, once there, it gave us everything we wanted...quiet, spectacular views, nature, room for the dog to run, interesting surroundings to explore, and all the creature comforts of home. We took small side trips every day into Silver City, Pinos Altos and different parts of the Gila Wilderness area. Silver City offered food, art, crafts and all the other amenities that make a vacation fun. The wilderness area also offered us plenty of opportunities to hike with the dog. We went there with no schedule; woke up when we pleased, napped when we pleased, ate when we pleased, and two weeks later left limp as noodles. It was like a massage for the soul.

The house itself was meticulously designed to blend into the environment. It's carved right into the mountain; about a third of it is underground. When we went (in late August) the afternoon temps can get quite warm, but the house never became oppressively hot thanks to quilted, thermal shades that kept the direct sun out and the living quarters comfortably cool with fans. Four decks surround the house, so you can eat outside in shade any time of the day. However, warning: bring some bug spray. July and August are the rainy season and when we were there, there was no shortage of mosquitoes.

The home is exceptionally quiet and comfortable. The owner had quite a library about local history and I think my wife read every book during the two weeks we were there. I would go back again in a heartbeat and recommend this home to anyone healthy enough to hike in the surrounding area. The elevation of the house is at 6800 feet so the air is quite thin. The terrain is also very rugged – there are lots of steep trails in the surrounding national forest.

All in all, it was a great stay. We left with many fond memories.
