North Beach House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, sleeps 6

Experience the Chesapeake from your very own front row seat. Surrounded by water on three sides, the living area is 1300 sq feet with an indoor walk up/utility area on the first floor. The third floor is unfinished & locked. The layout is open floor plan with kitchen, dining and living room facing the Chesapeake with stunning views out the large atrium doors. This property offers a 2nd level wrap around deck that looks down into the water where sea rays & skates glide by. Only a sea wall between you and the water out front, and a nature-preserve beach out back. A birder’s paradise—adjacent to, marshes, and tidal pools land-side of the property. Regular residents include diving ducks and dabblers, egrets, blue heron, sea gulls, gannets & terns. Osprey nest within sight and a bald eagle visits regularly. Fish feed on the surface before your eyes. Crab or fish from the property. Launch the kayaks from the yard and paddle to harbors north and south. Take a swim or float in the shallow water next to the property, or sit on the deck and watch ships roll down the channel.

Only 30 minutes to Washington DC and Annapolis. Locally it's a short walk or bike ride to the boardwalk/pier or shops, restaurants, and wine bar. Fine dining just 3 blocks away. Chesapeake Beach water park and charter boat fishing 2 miles south. Herrington Harbor 4 miles north. Stop by the Bay History Museum, walk to the farmer's market Friday eve where antique cars gather. Take in the summer concert series on the pier 2nd Saturday of summer months, or see free family movies all summer long on the 10 ft. high screen on the beach. Into night life? There's bingo, gaming and slots at many establishments within walking distance, as well as live music venues up and down the western shore. Cars are not necessary thanks to the Beach Trolley Association. Beach Trolley runs from Chesapeake Beach, through North Beach, up to Deale and back with a fare of only 25 cents per ride all summer. Bayfest live entertainment and crafts 4th weekend in August. September brings free campfires on the beach. Plan your vacation now for “Bay Galle”, the envy of North Beach.

About Patrick Murphy

Patrick Murphy and Annie Murphy Roberts inherited this home from their father, James Michael 'Mike' Murphy, and chose to preserve the property after purchasing interests from other family members. Mike Murphy designed the Smithsonian American History Museum and oversaw construction & maintenance of many Smithsonian buildings in DC for over 20 years before retiring at the house in North Beach. During World War II, he worked as a physicist on the Manhattan project at Los Alamos. He purchased the North Beach property in 1979. In 1986, he designed/engineered the building to withstand hurricane force winds by building on a 12-telephone pole foundation driven 34 feet into the ground. A category 4 hurricane (Isabel) has since passed in 2003 without disturbing the solid construction. He also engineered the tidal pool in the rear of the property to attract wildlife and serve as a boat launch. Patrick Murphy is an avid fisherman and small business owner. Annie Murphy Roberts is a health care provider.

Why Patrick Murphy chose North Beach

We chose to keep the property because it is unique among bay properties. There are water views on three sides, it has it's own private harbor, and unmatched proximity to the water. It is also less than one hour from our homes, making it the perfect weekend get-away.

What makes this house unique

The deck practically overlooks the water. The house has it's own protected harbor for small water craft. The proximity to the water allows you to see breaking schools of fish feeding, sea rays, ospreys, egrets or the blue heron residing in the back yard and adjacent marshes. Terrapins nest and their young hatch in the beach nature preserve behind the property. Unlike other houses on the street, you may crab or fish from the property.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was an amazing visit to this amazing house. Everyday we just enjoyed the views, the wildlife, the sounds of the waves, the laughter of the grandchildren and the many, many amenities and comforts the owner provided with this rental. We've rented many other houses in many other places and this was the most welcoming and most well-equipped. Thank you so much for that. We kayaked, swam, went to the beach, shopped, fished, crabbed, roasted marshmallows, puzzles, gamed, read, slept, and laughed a lot. We were able to go the farmer's market and it was a lot of fun. We hope to come back again some day. It was just great. Thanks!!

Very relaxing

  • 3 of 5

House is very nice location relaxing. Water views everywhere. Everything you could need is supplied by the owners. Unfortunately we picked a bad week unaware school started that monday so everything was closed. Jelly fish were out so we never went on the beach. Did go kayaking, crabbing, and fishing. Went to mt vernon and baltimore harbor a great place foe young children, elderly, couples get away and a group of fishing men. Do not recommend for teenagers unless it is a weekend trip.

Owner's Response: There is a public beach two blocks south of the property, with protective netting surrounding it to keep out sea nettles (jellyfish). It is very effective, but there are no guarantees. This was an unusually bad year for nettles. They may come in sometime after mid July, or not at all, depending on weather and currents. And a good tropical storm will chase them out late summer.

Family Vacation

The house was great! All the pictures are real. The parking is a little more complicated for larger vehicles than the picture leads you to believe b/c of the fence & driveway entrance but really no big deal in the end. The house is at end the street & there are neighbors even though you don't see the other houses in any of the pictures. Everyone we met was very friendly. The house is on the walking path for many residents & vacationers so we talked to people as they walked to the end of the road & turned around.

It was fantastic that the house has everything you need available. Not having to pack sheets, towels & other household goods was a plus. The house was clean & spacious & comfortable.

The boardwalk is close & brand new, lots of benches to sit & rest & enjoy the view. The bakeries, ice cream shop, candy shop, grocery store, waterpark & many places to eat very close by. The owner put together a spectacular binder for guests with all of the important & interesting information about the house & the area. I learned more from that book than all of my research on the internet.

DC is close by & easy to get to either by car or by Metro train (which I recommend).

The birds are plentiful & fun to watch. We loved watching the blue heron catch his meals along with the nesting osprey & ducks.

Kayaks(3) are in great shape and were fun to use and there are plenty of life jackets. The bikes were also in great shape though we didn't use them. There were also fishing poles available but you need your own tackle.

Jellyfish are present & prevalent in the bay so beware! I was unaware of the fact being from the Midwest.

I would recommend the house to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation spot close enough to DC but far away from the congestion & noise of the city.

Great family vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house was great! Had many features, HD tv, DVD player, Satelite TV, free WIFI. All the comforts of home. North Beach and Chesapeake Beach are great small towns. Nice people and great restaurants. We drove in to DC every day to see the sites. Next time we visit, we will book this house again and stay for 2 weeks or more to get in more sites.

Thank you for a great place and a great price!

Terrific Waterfront - three sides

  • 4 of 5

the view from the kitchen and living room was similar to being on a boat...water everywhere !

Residents in the community were very friendly...walking the boardwalk or attending Fridays wine tasting party.

and the owner was kind enough to provide a web site which allowed us to identy the ships which passed on the Bay....very interesting !

Family of five

  • 4 of 5

Location was nice (last house on street) with water on three sides. The owner's description and pictures of the property were accurate. The beach and pier were less than a 5 minute walk from the property, as were ice cream shops, restaurants, and antique stores. My husband and son enjoyed the use of the kayaks, and it was nice to not have to bring bed linens and towels with us. I would recommend this property.

SO Quiet and Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

The house is quite possibly the most relaxing beach property ever. The views from every window are amazing. The owner has provided everything you could possibly need to enjoy the beach right behind the house (2 kayaks, rafts, a tube, bicycles, beach chairs, life jackets and a grill!) The public beach is a short walk.

North Beach is a very quaint simple town so if you prefer the Jersey Shore type of vacation this is not for you. We loved it. Very natural and relaxed. Everyone we met was friendly. The restaurants are OK. Sweet Sue's Bakery is great! Nice 'n Fleazy antiques is a superb antiques shop a couple of blocks from the house.

Oh and the wonderful variety of birds that hang out in the tidal pool beside the house every morning.... VERY COOL.

We will definitely stay here again.
