Relaxed coastal elegance

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away on a quiet, one-lane road in South Palmetto Point, the Laguna is a peaceful dream of a vacation home. We are so grateful that we could share the laidback joys of the Bahamian lifestyle from a luxurious base.

From a full rack of spices to salad spinner, the kitchen was well stocked and left nothing to miss. A Bahamian welcome dinner got us right into vacation mood. Cozy linens and fluffy bath towels felt just like home, but better because of the incredible views. A great snorkeling area is right behind the house and all the beach toys you might need – from well-maintained snorkeling gear to boogie boards and even two double kayaks – ensure you won’t be bored. Our kids didn’t turn on the TV (or play console) once.

The location in the center of Eleuthera makes exploring the many beaches easily accessible and the owners have plenty of great suggestions. In our rental Jeep, we ventured to the most southern point Lighthouse Beach, and north to the Glass Window Bridge where a dark blue Atlantic is separated from a light turquoise Caribbean Sea only by a sliver of land not wider than a bridge. But, we realized that Club Med Beach, just 10 minutes away from the house, is just as gorgeous as Harbour Island’s pink beaches minus the crowds.

Just a couple miles from the house is Island Farm, a local farm where you can buy fresh greens, tomatoes, peppers, root veggies and some other supplies, including delicious home-made sauces and dips. Fresh breads and the cinnamon rolls on Tuesdays and Fridays are finger-licking good (make sure you get there before 10am or they sell out). For a treat, we ate at nearby Tippy’s, a beachfront restaurant with life music two nights a week (try their garlic shrimp but make reservations!!!). We bought fresh Tuna off the dock in Governor’s Harbor and BBQed it on our deck. On Friday night, we went to a Fish Fry and mingled with locals and visitors, exchanging travel stories and enjoying local delights.

Stephanie and Kevin Blankenship are gracious hosts who responded to our emails prompty and kindly. Their property manager warmly welcomed us like we are family friends and showed us the property. The house looks like new. The spectacular infinity pool was just finished last year and is the perfect temperature. BTW, so is the ocean. Really the only drawback was that we had to leave.

I wholeheartedly recommend visiting the Laguna. Unless you like crowds, noise and overpriced food, skip Nassau and add a couple days to Eleuthera.

Georgeous waterfront property!

  • 5 of 5

Laguna was absolutely beautiful, and perfect to accommodate our family. The home was well-equipped with everything that we needed and more. The pool was beautiful, and was great for a break from the salt water and waves of the ocean! Location was perfect with very easy access to great beaches, Island Farm and more!

exceptional

The pictures of Laguna don't do her justice. You walk in and have a 180 degree vista of the Caribbean, looking out over an infinity pool. It's just exquisite. The house has every amenity you could imagine, and then some, and all state of the art. We didn't even wonder if such-and-such would be there...we'd look...and there it was. We truly felt we were members of the Blankenship family - they prep you well for what to expect, give you free rein of snorkeling gear, kayaks, beach chairs, extra towels, wifi....really, anything you'd desire. We loved the "Beach Book" there at the house and tried two different beaches every day. Finding the beaches is half the adventure - it becomes quite the scavenger hunt, and then you're rewarded by miles of deserted beaches with unbelievable sand and crystal clear water. The property was clean, clean, clean (we had a nine month old crawling around) and having Shirley graciously prepare a Caribbean welcome dinner was over the top wonderful. Truly, the only problem we had was leaving - we decided three weeks would be better than one. We'll return. It was such a blessing for our family.

Aha Caribbean moment

  • 5 of 5

Drive down the driveway, park in front of the Laguna sign, walk across the gated courtyard and through the gracious front doors into the foyer, enter into the main living space and experience that aha Caribbean moment you've been dreaming of. Yes, 180° unobstructed view of bright blue lapping water. Loved the kitchen. The large plunge pool, though not heated, is a wonderful bonus. The house was spotless, clean, no heebie-jeebies. There are neighbors set back to the right of the home and were very very quiet/private. The care takers of the Laguna, Gabby, John and Shirley are a few miles away and all great resources to aid in your stay. This was our first time in Eleuthera and not knowledgable about the location of the house, but it's actually really great. Its just a few minutes to the main town G. Habour which is a few minutes North, there is a fresh vegetable farm/store minutes to the South and then there are the wonderful Atlantic sandy beaches a few minutes to the East. We rented a car from Big Daddy rentals and highly recommend them. They were waiting for us at the airport, drove us to our rental and met us at the airport for our departure. No see ums are tiny bitting flies or something, they will bite the heck out of you at dusk so put on the Deet/Off in the early evening and you'll be thankful(there is plenty at the house if you forget your bottle). We ate at a number of restaurants all very good with the exception of Tippys, yes, it's a huge disappointment...worst service ever!...and the food is simply horrible. This is in contrast to the lovely warm hearted Bahamian service you will experience at other restaurants. If you are up for it, there are local fishermen that sell fish outside under a small tent right at the corner of Governor Harbour on the beach across the street from the Da Perk. This is the best place, maybe only place for fresh food and they will clean, fillet, whatever you need - very cool. I can't wait to return to the Laguna house in Eleuthera. The owners Kevin and Stephanie live in the US and are very responsive via email and very helpful. They returned my deposit before I made it back to my home in the US!

Perfect vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Laguna for ten days and I wish we never had to leave. There were 6 adults in our group. The house was spacious with plenty of room to spread out. The house is well equipped with every modern convenience you might want - WIFI, espresso maker, Apple TV , Bose radio, rain shower - as well as every beach item you need - chairs, umbrellas, towels, even a beach bag for us to borrow. The beds 2 queens and a king were comfortable. But even better than the house was the back deck and pool. It was so beautiful overlooking the Caribbean, we had to make ourselves leave to explore and experience the island's beaches. We spent mornings having coffee and breakfast on the deck, picked a different beach everyday to visit in the afternoon, and then returned to Laguna for sunset swims in the pool. It was perfect.

Everything was as beautiful as we were told. The house is amazing and the pool is incredible. It is so relaxing and peaceful it's almost a shame to come home. Shirley was wonderful and the meal great. Definitely a dream destination.
