Stayed one night here whilst travelling around Ireland with friends. Martin was a great host- very welcoming and friendly. The cottage completely exceeded our expectations- it's huge, very beautiful, filled with everything you could possibly need and the stocked fridge supplies and soup/sandwiches were a delightful surprise on arrival. The cottage has two good sized bedrooms, two bathrooms, two lounge areas and a large kitchen/dining area with its own fireplace. Martin had lit both fires for our arrival too which also a lovely treat. When our fire went out and we had trouble restarting it, Martin happily came over to relight it for us- very much appreciated! I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this cottage to others and I look forward to staying again in future! Thanks Martin.
Martin and his family know how to offer a true Irish welcome. He was always generous with his time and hospitality. We had food in the frig, a hot meal welcoming us and goodies shared with us throughout the week.
The cottage was lovely and roomy enough for 6 people to have both privacy and shared space. It was spotless and enhanced by a fire that was lit for us each night. All amentities were as described.
The cottage was on a quiet country road about 10 min from a major highway and other roads that lead to major areas, i.e. Adare, Cashel, Killarney, Cahir, Limmerick, the ferry to county Clare, Galway, Cork, etc. There is also a town about 10 minutes away with a selection of supermarkets, restaurants and a pharmacy among others.
It was great to be near but not in the middle of a bustling tourist area. It gave us the ability to see the sites and still have the quiet of the countryside.
Not only would I recommend the cottage, I would look forward to staying again.
Martin was a wonderful host for out three night stay. This cottage is central to many attractions in the area. We were greeted with a chicken stew, very welcome after driving from Duncannon. The cabin was stocked with all the essentials. The cottage can easily accomodate many guests! The sitting room was seperate from the kitchen and allowed us some privacy from the rest of the people who were traveling with us. We were pleased to see a washer/dryer (although we had to ask Martin on how to operate it - seperate appliances in the US).
Martin is an excellent, obliging and attentive host --- and, yes, he had a supper ready for us upon arrival. The cottage is accurately described by its photos. And excellently located about 1km east of the Ahalin school and 2km east of Knockaderry. It is an excellent location for day trips to anywhere in the counties of Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Clare and the easier parts of Galway.
There was only me and my wife as residents and it was just right for us. While it would sleep 6 that many people would find the eating area and TV area pretty tight. Four OK.
The kitchen is well equipped. Alas, the dishwasher is a bit temperamental and the combined washer/dryer difficult to comprehend and slow by Canadian or US standards.
Similarly, you need to jot down Martin's instructions re TV operations so as to be sure you get all the many channels available.
These latter remarks re dishwasher and washer/dryer are why this review is headed Good++ rather the Excellent.
Easy to take day trips to many highlights of Ireland. The owner, Martin, is kind and looked out for us. We had a basket of food and a bottle of wine waiting for us. (I tried to leave a review in Summer 2011 when I stayed here but it didn't go through. So here you go, Martin. I never have forgotten what a great host you are.) My husband and I would return to this sweeeeet cottage definitely. The Knockaderry village pub is the real deal. Stay here and you won't regret it! -- Will, Coco, & our son, Ryan
Four of us stayed at the cottage for 4 nights. We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful Martin, who later bought us over a lovely chicken casserole and dessert - it was so great not to have to go looking for a place to eat after a long day's drive. The cottage is full of charm and reasonably well equipped (although we couldn't find a vegetable peeler, but a sharp knife did the job). We commented to Martin that it would be handy to have hooks on the back of the bathroom door, and they magically appeared when we were next out!
It's also very clean, and the heating very effective - we had one ill member of the party who was feeling the cold.
We did find it a bit further from Adare than we thought: it seemed to take us almost 20 minutes to get there, rather than the 10 minutes stated on the web site, but maybe we just didn't know the best short cut. This was only an issue for us as we were using the cottage as a base for going to Adare to follow up on family history, rather than using it as a basis for sightseeing the wider area.
There is a big Tesco's supermarket on the outskirts of Newcastle West that was closer than Adare.
The Internet access is WiFi via a dongle, which wasn't always 100% reliable and was a little slow. It needed to be put right near a window - like all these lovely old cottages, the thick walls don't encourage mobile phones! It did however work well enough for us to deal with emails.
Others have mentioned the steep stairs up to the den. They were a bit tricky to negotiate, but it's worth the effort as it's cosy and comfortable up there, and we enjoyed the selection of DVDs.
I recommend this cottage to anyone looking for an authentic Irish semi-rural retreat as a base for day trips - clean, comfortable with great hospitality from the owners.
The cottage is located within walking distance of the local village Knockaderry. It is approx 45 mins from Killarney , Tralee and Bunratty folk park. It is approx 1 hours from Dingle the Ring of Kerry and the Cliffs of Moher .local community events including hurling, gaelic football, rugby, carnivals and traditional music and dance. 15 mins from Limerick Racecourse, Clonshire Equestrian which caters for riders of all abilities, Newcastle West and Adare Manor Golf Clubs.
