GREAT PLACE TO STAY

  • 4 of 5
Four of us stayed at the cottage for 4 nights. We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful Martin, who later bought us over a lovely chicken casserole and dessert - it was so great not to have to go looking for a place to eat after a long day's drive. The cottage is full of charm and reasonably well equipped (although we couldn't find a vegetable peeler, but a sharp knife did the job). We commented to Martin that it would be handy to have hooks on the back of the bathroom door, and they magically appeared when we were next out!
It's also very clean, and the heating very effective - we had one ill member of the party who was feeling the cold.
We did find it a bit further from Adare than we thought: it seemed to take us almost 20 minutes to get there, rather than the 10 minutes stated on the web site, but maybe we just didn't know the best short cut. This was only an issue for us as we were using the cottage as a base for going to Adare to follow up on family history, rather than using it as a basis for sightseeing the wider area.
There is a big Tesco's supermarket on the outskirts of Newcastle West that was closer than Adare.
The Internet access is WiFi via a dongle, which wasn't always 100% reliable and was a little slow. It needed to be put right near a window - like all these lovely old cottages, the thick walls don't encourage mobile phones! It did however work well enough for us to deal with emails.
Others have mentioned the steep stairs up to the den. They were a bit tricky to negotiate, but it's worth the effort as it's cosy and comfortable up there, and we enjoyed the selection of DVDs.
I recommend this cottage to anyone looking for an authentic Irish semi-rural retreat as a base for day trips - clean, comfortable with great hospitality from the owners.

PERFECT LOCATION AND HOSPITALITY

  • 5 of 5
Martin is the perfect host for this perfect little cottage in the country. Far enough away to enjoy the relaxation yet close enough that you can drive to wherever you need. Centrally located between Blarney and Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula are great day trips. Thanks for a great trip and your home cooked meal upon our arrival and crackling fire each night we came back to at the cottage each night. This has been the best trip we have done in Europe (over 12 countries visited) and you and your family was one of the biggest reasons. Thank you for being a great host.

WONDERFUL COTTAGE!!

  • 5 of 5
Perfect cottage for experiencing the Southwest part of Ireland. Photos displayed the property very accurately. Martin is a helpful, accommodating host and answered many questions for traveling around Ireland. Irish stew upon arrival was so tasty as well as the dessert prepared by Catrina. We recommend the cottage to explore the area, and experience the quiet, beautiful countryside. Adare, called the most beautiful village in Ireland,is close by with castle ruins, visitor center and pubs. Groceries are available in nearby Newcastle West. We arrived in the area by train from Dublin, but one could also fly in to Shannon Airport. Having experienced many vrbo rental properties, we were especially impressed Martin and his lovely family and their welcome during our stay!

OLD WORLD CHARM WITH ALL OF THE MODERN DAY CONVENIENCES!

  • 5 of 5
The thatched cottage was cozy and warm even in an unusual rainy January week.

I loved having use of the two coal/peat burning stoves - having a fire in the kitchen was a lovely way to start and end the day. There was plenty of room around the kitchen table for meals and games and lots of room to spread out on times when we all needed some space.

Mom and I had the place to ourselves for the first five days and appreciated the luxury of the two bedrooms and two bathrooms. When the rest of the family joined us there was plenty of sleeping space for six adults (two of the sofas pullout into full sized beds).

The upstairs loft is lovely; you have to be fairly spry to reach it via the ladder-like stairs, I thoroughly enjoyed the view through the skylights and privacy of the space.

Martin and his family were amazingly helpful with random questions including finding a local company to replace a tyre on the rental car. He was very responsive to all of my questions prior to arriving.

Arriving after delayed flights it was wonderful to find the fridge and breadbox stocked. Martin greeted us with delicious soup and sandwiches and made us feel right at home.

It was easy to get to Shannon, Limerick, Adaire, and Newcastle West and several points of interest from the cottage.

I'm looking forward to my next visit!

WE FELT LIKE WE WERE LIVING IN THE COTTAGE WITH THE MOST ACCOMODATING NEIGHBORS!

  • 5 of 5
This cottage was ideal for our driving tour of Southwestern Ireland. We made easy day-trips to The Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, Dingle Peninsula, Blarney and Cork, Limerick's King John's Castle, Rock of Cashell, and Cahir Castle. The towns of Newcastle West, Adare, and city of Limerick were all close by for restaurants and supplies. Best of all, the cottage was exactly as indicated on VRBO, maybe better. I use a walker, and found that the two short steps to enter the house were easy to naneuver, with the kitchen counter available for support. The entire house was clean, comfortable, and excellently furnished. There were two bedrooms with plenty of closet space, two bathrooms with showers and heated towel racks, a living room and sitting area in the kitchen. The kitchen had under-the-counter, well-stocked refrigerator and separate freeezer, dishwaser, and washer. With the small appliances, fully equipped kitchen, and the groceries our host had provided, we prepared a few meals at 'home'. Martin even greeted us with an Irish chicken stew upon arrival, quickly followed by apple pie a la mode! We loved meeting his family, just like neighbors, who were very helpful with advice on the local attractions and services. My husband really enjoyed talking with him about the power and water sources, somewhat different from those in Texas. My husband even climbed the ladders into the two loft areas behind each fireplace. He said it would be great for kids. The cottage had lots of CD's of a wide variety of music styles, and a television in each room. The rain didn't bother us too much because we could drive right up to the back door and walk right into the warm, dry, cozy home. We stayed five nights, and would love to have stayed longer, had time allowed. We would recommend this house to anyone who wants to visit the Southwestern area without having to change hotels every night. If you have mobility issues, this may be the place for you. The only thing I would say in warning, is to rent a smaller car because, like most areas we drove in Ireland, the roads are narrow! Thank you for a great vacation expewrience.
