GORGEOUS LAKE MI VIEWS WITH PRIVATE BEACH--TRANQUILITY AT ITS BEST

St. Joseph House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, sleeps 5

Located on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, this beautifully landscaped property has over 100 feet of private, white sand beach. A wall of windows on the west provides spectacular views of the Lake from both the Great Room and master suite. A baby grand piano and a Vermont Castings wood burning stove are features in the Great Room. French doors from the Great Room open up onto a wood-decked screen porch that adds another 350 sq/ ft. of summertime living space. The 14-foot ceiling is high enough not to obstruct the Lake views from the master suite and still accommodate two large, working iron chandeliers. The kitchen is designed for serious and efficient cooking with stainless KitchenAid appliances and a custom stainless counter with welded sink. French doors lead out to a grilling patio and herb beds. The master bath has a 6' by 6' open marble tile shower with a hand-painted lilac bush tile mural. Many paintings and painted furniture are by local artists.

When you arrive: Lavender House is approximately 90 minutes from the Chicago Skyway Bridge and 30 miles north of South Bend. When you arrive at 3960 Evergreen Lane, turn to the Lake at the split rail fence and drive down a 100-yard country driveway, past Lilac Cottage to arrive at a spacious courtyard area where a 6 foot tiered fountain provides a welcoming atmosphere. From here you get your first glimpse of the magnificent Lake Michigan to the northwest. Perennial gardens surround the residence, with approximately 1800 sq. ft. of blue stone forming a path around the perimeter and three large stone terraces. The house is beautifully landscaped. There is a swing on the bluff to view the spectacular sunsets or just swing and read during the day. A fire pit and bench at the bluff expand your options for viewing the amazing Lake. At the edge of the bluff are the stairs, with landings every 20 feet, down to the private, white sand beach. Often one can walk for three miles without seeing another person.

When not at the beach: Inside, a 46-inch HD flat screen TV with satellite provides viewing options; a CD player with over 600 discs provides listening pleasure. Oriental rugs, original Eames chairs and ottomans, a Mitchell Gold sleeper sofa and leather recliner, furniture hand-painted by local artists, a baby grand piano, and artwork provide a comfortable ambiance. Or, you can experience light lake breezes from the 350 sq.ft. screened porch, furnished with a dining table and four chairs; a chaise; and a rocker. Every room in the house, with the single exception of the interior bathroom, has a beautiful view of either the Lake or gardens. There are stone terraces on three sides and a half bocce ball court on the Lake. After you make your reservation, you will receive Morrison and David's 20 most favorite things to do in the area--guaranteed to be something for everyone.

A cook's Kitchen: Designed for serious and efficient cooking, the kitchen boasts a 6-burner (each 15,000 BTU) KitchenAid gas cooktop; KitchenAid Architect series dishwasher, KitchenAid convection/conventional wall oven and convection/microwave oven; and an Amana double-door with freezer (and ice maker) under refrigerator. All appliances are stainless steel, as is the main counter with a welded sink to create a seamless workspace. Windows over the sink look out at the herb garden; French doors lead out to the grilling patio with a Weber Genesis propane gas grill. There is a built-in bookcase for cookbooks, and a closed-off laundry with Whirlpool Duet front-load washer and dryer on pedestals. Hand-painted tiles cover the top of the island concealing wall. All dishes, glasses, flatware, and cooking ware are provided. Naturally, there is a blender, food processor, coffee makers (drip, French and expresso), and toaster.

There is another house on the property, Lilac Cottage, homeaway.com, # 237744. Both houses sit on 1 1/2 acres and maintain privacy but do share beach stairs, the beach, and the bluff. There are 120 stair steps to the beach, with small landings every 20 steps. NO TELEVISION, ONLY DVD, UNTIL APRIL 18, 2014.

An amazing stay. Priceless views, spacious living area with ample storage and fabulous open floor plan. We loved it in the dead of Winter with ice and snow on the beach, piers and lighthouse. St. Joseph was very quaint and affordable. We had great soup, sandwiches and coffee at the Chocolate Cafe and we had two delicious meals at Shu's restaurant on the bluff. Highly recommend to anyone. House offers privacy and proximity to St. Joseph is great for sightseeing, shopping, food and beaches

WOW!!!!

This was our (Wife, 4 month old, and I) first time traveling to Michigan for a vacation and I must say I was very impressed... This property had everything needed to make it feel like a home away from home. Views were phenomenal property gorgeous and very clean. In short just bring yourself, food (if you plan on cooking in the lovely kitchen - Highly recommend - oh and some adult beverages) you wont even have to leave the property. I must add that the neighbors were very welcoming and a pleasure to meet as well. Sarah thank you for being such a great person to work with and for being so accommodating and understanding with our last minute booking... Again thank you and will definitely bee back sooner than later..

Absolutely beautiful!

  • 5 of 5
We loved this rental! The house was very modern, updated, and really clean!
Everything worked well, and the beds and furniture were comfortable.
The best thing, of course, was the lake! As soon as you step outside, there's a fresh breeze, and an amazing view of Lake Michigan! The backyard was great. We made s'mores by the fire pit, and sat on the chairs and swing looking out to the lake.
The stairs that go down to the beach are a bit scary and may need some improvement. Also, the master bedroom in the house was wonderful and large, but the other two rooms weren't that great. The 2nd bedroom was a bit like a garage. Very small, and low. The 3rd bedroom was small also, and a bit awkward since it was right by a hallway. The beds in all the rooms were either queens, or twins and it would be better to have a queen in the smallest room, and kings in the other rooms.
Overall, the house was beautiful and there were great amenities! We would definitely recommend this rental to family, friends, and even strangers!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review. Happy renters make us happy! Just a few notes. Because the master bedroom is so large, it makes all the other bedrooms feel small! The second bedroom that you refer to is actually 15'x11 1/2' with an 8 1/2' ceiling; in most homes this would be considered relatively large! It also has windows along the south wall that look out over the raised herb beds and gardens. The third bedroom is small with a twin bed. However, there is a pocket door that closes it off from the hallway. Most bedrooms are off a hallway. Because of its size, we have only a twin bed so that there can be a chair in the room, too. Unlike many owners who rent out houses, we do not try to maximize our accommodations. We limit Lavender House to 5 people so that there is plenty of space for everyone. In our listing, we do correctly identify the beds as two queens and one twin. In appreciation of our wonderful renters, we do offer a 10% appreciation discount off future rentals. Hope you visit Lavender House again.

Just about perfect!

Fabulous home on the beach. Beautiful interior, well suited for a family with older children. Washer/Dryer, BBQ grill, all the extras that made it easy to relax and enjoy the beautiful view and white sandy beach. Grounds and house were beautifully maintained. I would defiantly recommend this property to anyone and would stay there again.

AWSOME VOCATION!!!

  • 5 of 5
We have been spending our summer vacations in the St. Joseph, Michigan for the last six years. In our many years of visiting we have been searching for the perfect place to stay. I believe we have found it! This home is was fully equipped with everything we needed. We bought some groceries and really didn’t have any reason to leave this tranquil, lovely home. Down at the private beach we enjoyed the kayaks! Our children were able to leave some of their sand toys without having to lug them back and forth. The neighbors were helpful and delightful. Our questions were answered quickly! We definitely plan to stay here again!

Perfect Spot!

  • 4 of 5
My wife and son, along with our two labs stayed in the main house for a week. What a great spot. The house is up to date, well maintained and well equipped. The master Bedroom has a great view of the lake as does the liviing and dining area. It's a bit of a climb down to the beach, but the beach is wonderful and private. It just goes on for miles.

Our only complaint is that internet connection is very SLOW. This was not a function of the wireless router.. but a very low speed (DSL?) connection... it was barely useable. I know you're supposed to unplug.. but in this day and age... the internet connection is essential for my family. With an improved connection ... this would be a "5 star" location.

Owner's Response: We have the fastest DSL plan that AT&T offers in the area. It is the most dependable type of internet access for the area. We do, however, recognize that it may be slower than what our guests are used to. Because there are two rental homes, Lilac Cottage and Lavender House, on the property, we pay for separate internet accounts to avoid overloading the service which could result in even slower service. We are sorry that the guests were disappointed in the internet speed, but it is the best and most dependable internet that we can offer in the country location.

St. Joseph, Southwest, Michigan, USA (less than 2 hours from Chicago, 6 miles north of St. Joseph, Michigan, and 30 miles north of South Bend, Indiana). The area is known for its beautiful, white sand beaches on the shores of southeast Lake Michigan, which is actually warm enough to swim in during the summer months. Most renters can't tear themselves away from our beautiful and quiet beach where they can kayak, swim, walk on the sand, or just sunbathe. But the House is just down the road from the Harbor Shores Golf Course, a Jack Nicklaus signature public golf course that the Wall Street Journal named one of best courses in the USA. The many wineries in the area have created a Michigan Wine Trail; some wineries have summertime jazz festivals or antique car shows. In Benton Harbor there is even a craft beer brewery,The Livery, which often has live music concerts. Many fine restaurants abound in the area. You can walk along the channel in St. Joseph to view the sculptures and history markers, or even take a stroll out to the St. Joe Lighthouse past the glorious Richard Hunt sculpture. Chocoholic? Drive out to Coloma, past Contessa Winery and Grandpa's Cider Mill, to arrive at the absolutely fabulous Chocolate Garden with its handmade truffles. Cloudy day? Go to the movies, either the mom and pop theater in Coloma or the multi-screen complex at Celebration Cinema off U.S. 94 in Benton Harbor. From June to October, enjoy the best local food products at the St. Joe's Farmers' Market on Saturdays. Like Art? Visit the Krasl Art Museum along the bluff in St. Joe. Or go to the Children's Museum down the block. St. Joe also sponsors weekly band shelter concerts along the bluff. Even the Southwestern Michigan Symphony Orchestra schedules outdoor concerts during the summer. There is an avid sailing community in St. Joe. If you want to do some fishing, contact one of the many fishing boat captains for a day out on Lake Michigan. Want to go for a walk in the woods? Try the Sarett Nature Center where there are several nature trails, some handicap accessible. Spend some time at the Box Factory for the Arts in St. Joe, gazing at the artists at work in their studio/retail shops. There are dozens of artists, and a small performance center which often has concerts and plays on week-ends. Interested in glass blowing? Stop by at Waterstreet Glassworks in Benton Harbor, a public access glassblowing, beadmaking, fusing, and metalwork studio with a gallery. Next door is a gelateria operated by students at the Glassworks. Down the street is yet another artist studio building, The Studios @ 210, where you can walk through and see artists at work. Like gardens? Try visiting Fernwood Botanical Gardens in Buchanan. Want to take a short road trip? South Haven, Holland, Saugatuck and Douglas are all close and an easy drive. Or a quick shopping and sightseeing trip to Chicago is less than 2 hours away on Amtrak, leaving from the St. Joe station daily. If you desire a public beach, Silver Beach in St. Joe is very popular with its Carousel, Fountain and Butterfly House. Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor is also a fine beach with wonderful mosaics. Of course, the best activity in the area is watching the sun go down over our bluff.
