Solitary until you want company

I wanted to get away from it all, even hotels and resorts, to something really different, with nice and friendly people, a culture different from mine, and lots of sun and sand. I found it at Black Point in Ida's Sand Dollar cottage. There I paced from front porch overlooking the pounding Atlantic to back deck looking out over the busy bay. With my binoculars I could keep track of the guest boats and what was happening at the dock, especially when the mail boat came in on Wednesdays. That's when I know to hop on my golf cart and get myself in on the action. I watched the tide going in and the tide going out and knew when I could climb down the cliff and walk halfway across the bay on sand.
I was cosseted with Lorraine's mother's wonderful coconut bread, Ida's conch fritters and trinkets -- like the papaya from her tree, so delicious with the young coconut her hired man, Delmore, got for me. I rode my golf cart into town and had lunch of fried conch at Lorraine's restaurant, and a rum drink at Scorpio's, did my laundry at Ida's laundromat and talked to tourist boaters who meet there to socialize and do their laundry. Nice people, natives AND tourists, but Ida is simply superlative.
My favorite thing about the cottages? The spacious shower, the well-appointed kitchen, the comfy couch, and those two porches, front and back. And that gorgeous sandy, sunny solitude.
