My husband and I own a photography business in the RTP area of North Carolina that keeps us very busy. We started our business in Apex 17 years ago when we moved an historic 3000sq,ft. 2 story home to our current location and added a 2000sq. foot studio on to it as well as built gardens on 2 acres of the property for outdoor portraiture. What we created was a beautiful place to live and work from but we soon found out we never 'left' work. Our cozy cottage in the mountains has become our place to just unwind and be immersed in nature and the quite sounds of bubbling brooks and birds chirping. We can get in our car and be in the quaint adorable town of Blowing Rock when we want a fine dining experience or just walk down to the stream and catch our dinner out of the stream. We feel like we have the very best of both worlds here and always find it so hard to pack up the car and leave here when work beckons again. Once you have spent a few nights here you will understand the magic of our place and will want to make it one of your 'happy places' as well.

Kim Henson purchased this cottage in 2006

We had been looking for property in the nc. mountains for a few years when we found this little slice of heaven. We told the realtor we wanted mountain views as well as a stream and she said it was almost impossible to find, so when we saw this property we new we had found a most unique and perfect place. We had our home built here in 2006 and have called it our 'happy place' since our 1st day of moving everything in. We have made so many lasting memories with our 2 girls and now a son-in-law as well. Our youngest will be attending college in the mountains this fall so we will hopefully have more reasons to spend time here. Our wish is for you to experience the serenity and beauty of our most beloved home and make new and lasting memories of your own.

To get to our house you have to traverse a beautiful winding road cut through the mountains bordered by deep forests on both sides. We sit 1/12 miles off the main road and when you arrive at our home you feel that you are in a place a million miles from all the hustle and frenetic activity of our city or suburban lives. It is so quite and tranquil and yet just a short ride to any activity you would want. Fine dining, great shopping and wonderful spas are all a short drive for us ladies. We abut up to a 5000 acre NC. game-lands so you can walk a few hundred yards and be in some of the most pristine and beautiful hunting land in the whole state. Walk to bottom of our property and go fly fishing for trout or tubing down the stream.Drive a couple of miles down the road and you will find historic properties to tour, equestrian centers to ride or board horses,as well as a public park with picnic and basketball areas and playground equipment.Go a little further and you are on the blue ridge parkway, one of the prettiest scenic drives in the country. Whether you want to come and explore the wonderful Blue Ridge Mountains are just sit and read a book on the front porch you are sure to love every minute here.

Happy Little Cottage

  • 5 of 5
LOVED IT! My husband & I had a wonderful time at this happy little cottage. Very peaceful and relaxing. The only sounds we could hear were the birds singing and the trickle of the creek. It was an excellent place to get away from everything. We had no wireless service or cell phone service which provided us the opportunity to disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other. We were happy to have access to a land line phone in the home just in case of an emergency & we were given the number prior to our stay so I was able to make sure my children had it before leaving town.
The cottage is decorated in a very sweet, simplistic manner which makes for a nice cozy feeling. The cottage was EXTREMELY clean which is very important to me. When I sat down on the bed & could smell the clean scent of the freshly laundered bedding I was thrilled.
The kitchen was well stocked with items to cook with. My husband and I enjoy cooking together on our trips as opposed to eating out, so having things we needed to complete our meals was a plus. We have learned to tote with us certain items, but we were pleasantly surprised that those little things like salt and pepper were right there ready for us to use.
The road getting to the cabin is very curvy and unpaved. We decided to drive my Honda Pilot based on another review. I am glad we did. My pilot is not a 4 Wheel drive, but it still helped us over some of the bumpy spots. A lower vehicle might have a little difficulty on the road, but should still be able to make it under normal conditions.
The outside shower is wonderful. I didn't think I would like that much but it was actually really pleasant. There is a shelf for toiletries and hooks for towels and robes.
We took extra blankets with us and used them at night to lay down in the front yard. We were able to look up through the trees and see the stars. It was beautiful and peaceful.
The pictures posted, accurately show off the quaint little home. I was very pleased with every aspect of our stay. I have bragged on our stay to everyone at work and on Facebook. Kim told me in an email that it was their happy place and I am pleased to say that my husband and I have named it as our happy place too. I hated to leave but I hope that we can return again very soon.
I highly recommend this place if you need to truly get away. It is far enough away but not so far that you can't go out for a drive and find something fun to do. Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, etc.

Perfect for our first anniversary trip

  • 5 of 5
Wow. This house was absolutely perfect. I was so sad to leave. My husband and I wanted to go somewhere quiet for our first anniversary and this was it. I won't lie, when we first drove up the mountain on the dirt road, I was super nervous. It does take a good 10 minutes to get to the house, but it is totally worth it. We made the mistake of driving a car but that was our own fault. The sunrises were amazing and the trees were beautiful. The inside was like a fairy tale with the high ceilings and loft. We rented a few redbox movies to watch at night. It is about 20 minutes or so from Blowing Rock which was perfect. I wish I could go back and hopefully next year we will! The photo that goes along with this post is exactly what it looked like! If you are looking for a quiet and serene place with beautiful views, this is it!

The definition of peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5
Rather than taking our usual Caribbean vacation, my wife and I decided to go somewhere different, and a bit closer to home. Neither of us had visited the Boone/Blowing Rock area before and thought we would give it a look. We arrived at the cabin with no problems from the directions given to us by the owner. This property is very secluded! Be prepared for this. You will most likely have no cell phone/internet signal. Aside from watching DVDs and reading, you get the opportunity to actually converse with your traveling partner/group. The cottage is quaint and well-equipped, with a comfortable bed and nicely appointed kitchen. The silence at night, all but for the crickets and the creek, were the the highlights for us. The long driveway to get to the cottage offered plenty of walking opportunities. Blowing Rock and Lenoir were about 25 minutes away for supplies, and Boone just a bit further north of BR. The Blue Ridge Parkway was close as well as several wineries and good restaurants. If you're looking to get away from it all, don't have to be in the middle of nightlife, this cabin may be able to help you recharge.
