El Cuyo Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Beachfront, Peaceful, Relax, whale shark, holbox,German Owner Adventure,

Dear Travellers in the Yucatan,

we made a very attractive 360 degree virtual tour for you to be able to 'walk thru' our homes and Apartments, the beaches of El Cuyo, the Fishing Port, the Lagoon

and its surroundings. The link is available on this page, or simply send us an email, then we will send it to you as well.

If you dont feel like spending your well deserved vacation in Highrise Hotels, timeshares or condos in Cancun or Playa del Carmen , and you are rather looking for relaxation and recreation in the real Mexico, the unspoilt Caribbean Feeling of El Cuyo may something you should consider.

Puerto del Cuyo is a small, unspoiled Beachtown filled with Cocunut palm trees near Holbox, and is today the only coastal town in the Yucatan which is dotted with palm trees. At all other beaches in the Yucatan, the palm trees were exterminated by a plague some years ago, and were sadly not reforested . Not so in Puerto del Cuyo, here you can still find the Caribbean Feeling mixed with mexican flair that used to be found in every Yucatan Beach town.

Hacienda del Cuyo with Penthouse and Casa Maya Lodge is a private three-story beach house built in colonial spanish style right on the pristine beaches of El Cuyo.It is equipped with air conditioning in the bedrooms, for better sleeping comfort of our guests. The cushioned lounge chairs on the beach and our hammocks invite you for sunbathing and relaxing the Mexican Way. The Villa is surrounded by many coconut palm trees with plenty of natural shade.. From large beach terraces you can admire sunrises and sunsets over the ocean. Up to 8 people find room on the ground floor , up to 4 people in the Penthouse (Floor 2 ) 1 bedroom, fully equipped kitchen, living room, bathrooms with hot water. The Casa Maya Lodge on the 3rd Floor has a Queensize Bed, Bathroom and Kitchenette and Terrace. A tropical garden with a palapa and palm trees invite you for get-togethers.Its ideal for families with children, seniors, singles and adults that don't want to spend their well deserved Vacations on crowded beaches.

Activities: Mayan Ruins, flamingo-, bird-, whaleshark-, dolphin and seaturtle watching, caves, cenotes, colonial cities, markets, bullfights, etc.

We plan to stay on the road until some time in 2015. Starting the adventure in Halifax, exploring wonderful Newfoundland, heading west through Canada, enjoying the summer up in Yukon, the Indian Summer in British Columbia, Centralamerica with all its edgyness and soon Southamerica.'

Casa Maya Lodge, Eagle Nest over the Palmtrees on the Beach of Puerto del Cuyo Nestled among the palms on the 3rd floor in a typical country style, the Maya Lodge (26m2 living space) with a palm roof, shower room, kitchen and beach terrace (24m2) for 2 guests. We recommend that Eagle Nest Lodge with fabulous views of the sea and the beach for adventurers and people who appreciate the simple and natural Life ala Robinson Cruesoe. Since many of the guests wanted to experience how the local Mayan Indians live, some have already been staying in the so-called 'Palapas', 'Cabanas' or 'Lodges' in various places in Yucatan or Central America and had fun doing it. And we thought, why not offer something different on the 2nd floor, special and truly authentic, our guests? Thus, our Casa Maya Lodge has been launched. It is not unbending mt for families young children, but rather recommended for couples and singles.

About Mattias Doehling

The best career decision I've made in my life was to come to this beautiful country,....Mexico.

I love the country and its people, but their slowness, tardiness and informality in some cases still bothers me, even after 20 years I now live here. You just have to put everything into the balance ... it's a bit hard to explain .... but it's something like if you want a fruit that has no shell or skin, is something ... thats not possible.

I was born and educated in Bamberg, Germany and finished my career there. After that, I went to work for the Mouse in Disney World in Orlando Florida and have worked in the German Pavilion at Epcot , .. followed by 2 years at Lufthansa in Frankfurt. Driven by wanderlust ... I then followed the call Mexico's in 1993.

I lived for 20 years in Cancun, Mexico, ... and still work part time in 5 star hotels. 12 years ago I started with the first Vacation apartment. We now have 7 and also rent you our Vw Beetle to our guests. We are the owners of these houses and can be reached anytime personally, by phone or by email. In the Competition of the Landlord of the Year in 2011, we made the 3 place, and in 2012 we reached the 1st place. It's a lot of fun with guests, and we are always passing along our longtime experience in Mexico . We look forward hosting you ...

Mattias Doehling purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Mattias Doehling chose El Cuyo

Who do we recommend to rent a vacation home in Yucatan?

If you are interested in getting to know the mexican culture, its people the hospitality and its food , is flexible and willing to learn more about the 'Mexican way of Life'and wants to experience more 'Local Flavour'... away from the beaten Tourist path and 5 Star Hotels will enjoy it..come and stay with us.

Who should reconsider it?

If you are looking to be pampered in a 5 Star All inclusive Hotel and need Buffett style meals , having an English speaking concierge 24 hours a day...then do yourself a favor..and dont renta a vacation home.

What makes this cabin unique

Hacienda del Cuyo:

Working in Cancun´s Hotel Business during the week , on days off, we enjoy travelling in the Yucatan with its fabled culture, away from the city .. and mass tourism. In February 2000, we have come by accident to El Cuyo ... the drive threre was overwhelming ... over a reddish pink lagoon with flamingos, the road led to the village .. further to a Mayan pyramid with a lighthouse built on top of it. The roads in El Cuyo are made of sand and coconut palm trees everywhere in the quaint Village. Miles of fine white sand beach with no tourists but lots of seashells.. as far as the eye can see. We were delighted, and then spent every free weekend in El Cuyo. One day, someone offered us a small house for sale. There was at that time only a ground floor. We immediately fell in love with this 'rough diamond' and have restored it with much passion. we didnt think of it as a rental business at that time. After some time, we have added the 2nd floor Penthouse and te Rustic Casa Maya Lodge.

We still spend every free weekend in El Cuyo ... now with our 2 young Kids...

Hacienda Antigua

We acquired it in 2002 and 2012, lovingly converted it to the Hacienda Antigua. Outside walls are handmade of a natural stone facade by Mayan Craftsmanship. Inside a Mayan artist from Izamal Hand-painted colonial decorations on the Walls .Lots of heavy wrought iron was used inside the Hacienda. The Beach terrace covers a big Pyramid shaped palapa , so our guests can always hide in the cooling shade of this palm thatched masterpiece.

The atmosphere fostered a sense of "JUST BEING".

The atmosphere fostered a sense of "JUST BEING".
  • 5 of 5
Our three week stay at Casa Maya Lodge was extraordinary to say the least. It began with our cheerful host, Mattias, greeting us at the Cancun Airport at 8 pm and chauffeuring us to our comfortable hotel the ibis which he suggested because there was a super market and pharmacy at it's base with currency exchange and shopping within walking distance and it's reasonably priced; The following day we stocked up on groceries and were then again met by Mattias and Alfredo and his taxi which Mattias had arranged. Alfredo and his taxi were immaculate and our journey, 2 hours, was very safe; Alfredo even carried our luggage up 3 flights of stairs and summoned the caretakers Magally and Christian.
Now the magic began. Upon arrival in El Cuyo it was obvious that this small fishing village 2 hours NW of Cancun was quaint, quiet and safe. The accommodations were very adequate, charming with its thatched roof and rustic interior and afforded a superb vista of the Gulf and beach 3 stories below. The north facing private veranda afforded adequate sun and shade allowing for personal sunning. Soaring pelicans and frigates abounded overhead with an occasional squad of Marines from the local Naval Base jogging by below at the surf line. The towns people and merchants were extremely friendly and understanding of our language barrier. The merchants were very helpful since we spoke no Spanish other than "Hola". The town square was an easy walk and included Mayan women selling their fresh fruits and vegetables, several excellent restaurants, the fishing boat harbor and several small grocery stores, even a pharmacy. Our host provided us with internet access and was easily accessible and accommodating.
We feel this was the perfect get-away for a couple; it was peaceful and tranquil. Strolling the clean white sand beach, immersing into the calm warm Gulf water and greeting friendly towns people while strolling into town on the sand streets or to the harbor was the frosting. Transportation away is limited unless you rent an automobile in Cancun though if you're seeking peace and tranquility isn't necessary. Fishing and excursions can be arranged.
The atmosphere at Casa Maya Lodge fostered a sense of "JUST BEING", no pretense or pressure to live up to others or caring; the view from the veranda was incredible and welcomes all who come to return. T&J

Best Mexican Vacation EVER!

  • 5 of 5
The Hacienda del Cuyo is the perfect place to stay in El Cuyo. It is clean and spacious and has all the amenities you could ask for. Imagine English TV in a tiny fishing village in the Yucatan! Not that we watched it. The location of the Hacienda is perfect on the beach and the sound of the ocean was too good to cover it up. Every evening was spent outside enjoying the stars and the warm breeze. We even had a bonfire when friends joined us for the weekend. Being there during low season was perfect. No one even walked past us on the beach for hours at a time, so we spent most of our day in swimsuits running in and out of the ocean only to collapse into one of the many hammocks Mattias and Gemi had hung up for us. They are great hosts and we have rented from them twice so far and will never even try any other place after having stayed at the Hacienda and Villa del Faro. The best recomendation ever was to take a boat ride to Rio Lagartos to check out the flamingos and other wildlife. If you want nightlife and bright lights, go to Cancun. If you want to feel like you are one with nature go to El Cuyo. And definitely rent one of Mattias' places. They are much more comfortable than any of the hotels, and you will be treated like family. Thanks Mattias.

Yukatan + Vw Käfer...eine tolle Kombination!

  • 5 of 5

Clever gemacht.
Gerne wieder,...Hasta Luego

Toller Urlaub für echte Erholung

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

We are German Owners living in the Yucatan

Puerto del Cuyo is a typical laid back Fisherman's Village away from the crowds.

If you are thinking about an eco-tourism adventure or weeks of relaxation and privacy near a ocean with turquoise greenish

waters and white sand sprinkled with a beautiful variety of shells,

which invite to explore and make long walks on the beach, Hacienda

del Cuyo is an option you shouldnt miss. We invite you to walk the

beach in front of the Villa in the morning, enjoying a brilliant

dawn and during the evening you will be able to see

spectacular sunsets on the same beach. This is one of the

many advantages to stay at this Villa, as it faces the northern

waters, spectacular dawns and sunsets can be watched.

And there is more… if you get tired to watch the ocean, we invite

you to take a look behind the villa to the south towards Ria

Lagartos, where you will find countless pink flamingos, unique in

this region, nesting very near in the calm waters of the Lagoon.

Other Activities: snorkelling, stargazing, swimming with whale sharks, flamingo and bird watching
