Beautiful, private oceanfront house on 12 wooded acres on Islesboro Island, Maine. Islesboro is a 20 minute ferry ride from Lincolnville, a few miles north of Camden. It is an unspoiled, quiet place. The nearby towns on the mainland are some of the prettiest on the coast.
The house has four bedrooms plus a sunporch. One queen bed, one full, and four twin beds. One of the bedrooms us up in a tower. There is a full kitchen, satellite TV, wifi internet, washer and dryer. There are 840 feet of private shore filled with fat mussels for picking at low tide.
The island and the house are low-key. Although there are many activities on the island in the summer -- public beaches, little nature walks for children, community center activities, opportunities for sailing lessons, etc. -- time spent there is largely about relaxing, ambling around, thinking about what to make for dinner, wandering to the shore and back, looking at the sky and water. It is also an ideal place to do concentrated artistic or creative work.

I am a professor and a theatre and opera director and writer. I designed and built the house with a set designer colleague of mine. The island is a sort of heaven.
The feeling of being on an island is unique: there is a deeper sense of relaxation, a deeper safety. I sleep better there than anywhere in the world. My dog is free and full of himself.
We loved the house. It was just perfect for the four of us and gave us the tranquility we were all looking for. The kitchen was set up very nicely and the views were absolutely gorgeous from many areas of the home. The queen mattress was a little too soft for my comfort but I moved into the tower room that was incredible especially at night looking out at the stars and the cove at the same time. Would go again in a heartbeat. Maybe next year, I hope. Wonderful walking trails. Very impressive!!!
This house is a stunning and impeccably designed hideaway, with all of the comforts you could want. The views from every room are gorgeous, and the rooms are spacious and well appointed. The kitchen has everything you need, and many things you didn't know you needed until you had them handy! We had a great time picking mussels along the coastline in the backyard, playing lawn games in the big open grassy area, going to the many nearby beaches with our dog, stopping at the Dark Harbour shop for ice cream, and going on some gorgeous hikes. Life on the island is tranquil, so this is not the place if you want to go out to dinner every night. But if you are looking to truly unwind, and enjoy exploring it is just the ticket!
