Looking for a Relaxing and Fun getaway? Enjoy Richardson Ocean Park located just a few minutes walk from this Hawaiian retreat. Located on the sunny end of Hilo and the most popular recreational shoreline on the east side of The Big Island, you will find this recently remodeled home has privacy along with all the comforts and emenities for a relaxing comfortable vacation. Many vacation rentals are ocean front with views but few have such great accessability to the ocean with sandy beaches. A variety of snorkels, masks, flippers, two boggie boards, towels, chairs, cooler, beach cruiser bikes, even a kayak are provided for your use. The location of this home offers so much more than just private luxury. Wander down the park and you will find yourself engulfed in the local Hawaiian culture. Even from the porch you will hear the children playing and smell the BBQs of family gatherings. Richardson's Ocean Park is very popular for those with children due to easy access and sheltered lagoons and lifeguards on duty It was donated by the Richardson Family for the purpose of marine life preservation. All pictures were taken within two blocks of this home. Get the feel of old Hawaii wandering the paths around ancient fish ponds, tidepools, discovering treasures along the shore and meeting the local people. Watch surfers, net fisherman, or swim with the hundreds of varieties of tropical fish and search for turtles. Whales come yearly in the winter months, and can't be missed spouting and breaching just off shore. This 3 bedroom home is surrounded by a small tropical garden and even has a lava tube (cave) with a small fish pond. The home's large master bedroom also has a single bed for possibly that child needing to be close to Mom and Dad. There is a small desk, looking out to the ocean, Wi-Fi and printer. The kitchen is modern, fully equipped with most the gadgets a gourmet chief might need. Many hours can be spent enjoying the sights and sounds from the porch rocking chair or just watching the geckos. However; the most redeeming feature of this home is the location. This is not Waikiki and you will not find any luxury resorts. This is a very lush tropical area and here you will share the jungle with not only geckos, but also mongoose, wild chickens and coqui frogs. Hilo is unique in Hawaii. You will experience the 'real' Hawaii here. Hilo has the largest percent of Native Hawaiian population anywhere in the state and people here are happy and in their pidgin dialect always willing to 'talk story' of their lives and culture for those that are curious. Old Town Hilo with it's famous farmers market still retains the feeling of the sugar cane empire with it's turn of the century architecture. Take the scenic drive up the Hamakua Coast to Waipio Valley. Don't forget your swim suit when driving down along the Red Road Coastline. You won't want to miss a stop to soak in the warm pond. Along with a trip to Hawaii Volcano National Park and up to the summit of Mauna Kea (13,796 ft.) for sunset and you will leave Hilo with memories and experiences you will only find on the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Check the location of your prospective vacation rental. This is a big island and many rentals can be very isolated. This home is close to the airport, and all shops and attractions of Hilo Town.
PS. I do not have an empire of vacation rentals and will be personally taking your reservation, and making sure you are comfortable with all that you need. I am not a Landlord Mogul, Real Estate Agent or Property Manager. Just need to rent this home so I can pay the bills and also enjoy staying here as much as possible. When this home is rented I stay and work at my 3 acre farm 15 miles away.
After years of vacationing to Hawaii, camping around all the islands, I came to Hilo. I found a place rich in music and arts. The people are happy, kind, open minded thinking. And the climate is perfect !!!
This side of the Big Island is a lot like the culture and green environment I was used to in my rural Northern California home. I just felt like I fit in here better than anywhere else in Hawaii and so when the chance came, I moved. Scary as it was moving alone to a strange land with nothing but two suit cases, I have no regrets.

Richardson's Beach Park offers more recreation than anywhere else in Hilo. This house is also my personal place to relax when I can get time away from the Puna farm.
Ocean View just off the main road by half a block, has the sound of nature and not traffic. Just a short walk to all shoreline activities with crystal clear water to cool off in. Walking, jog, run or bike. Take the bikes or Kayak out for a lazy afternoon or to discover hidden coves along the shoreline. Lots of activities available.
Way too many comments to post. All positive.
I prefer to let guests post their own reviews if they wish
and don't feel the need to further pump up the attributes of this home with owner entered comments. Steve Walsh (Owner)
This home is just across from Hilo's most popular Ocean Park and recreational area. Watch the waves roll in from the porch and relax to the sound of the ocean. Swimming, picnicking, laying on the small beachs, watching whales, it is all just a short walk away. Richardson's Beach Park is an education site donated by the Richardson family for the study of marine life. It is a safe park used by many families with young children. The beach is safe for supervised children and there are life guards on duty. Enjoy picnic tables, benches and BBQs for your convenience along with the easy access for swimming and some of the best snorkeling in all Hawaii. Turtles are frequently seen and you can watch whales when they come to give birth in the winter to spring months. Even do some Boogie Boarding or Surfing if you dare at the break just outside the park. When you're ready for a great Seafood dinner, visit the Hilo Seaside Resturant just down the street. Hilo town center is just a quick 5 miles.
