Alpine Lake Suites is a Climate Smart social enterprise that hosts community pot-luck dinners, often with music and song, and you are invited! The community courtyard is a great place to hang out and for the kids to meet other children at play. There is even an awesome sliding hill that wraps it way down the hill.
In Nelson the bus drivers always wait until you are comfortably seated! If you find yourself on a corner with a confusing map, someone will stop and help you on your way. Later, you may find the person who stopped to help was the Mayor! It is just the way we are.
Ray and Karen met at the top of Kootenay Lake in the small rural community of Johnson's Landing. After a weekend of the very best of fights, they proposed to each other and were married 3 months later. Nelson is the place they have chosen to raise their two boys.
Karen was born in Montreal and spent much of her childhood in Mississauga. She was schooled at Carlton and McMasters University. She is skilled at building community as was demonstrated by her time as a coordinator for Big Brothers and Sisters. And she has a passion for arts and crafts!
Ray was born in Calgary and grew up in Pentiction and Kamloops. His schooling was done at the University of British Columbia with an Honors Degree in Economics and a Masters of Physical Education in counseling. He fell in love with storytelling and spent almost twenty years as a touring professional.
Together they are entrenched in creating a thriving, relaxing, and meaningful community with their sons.

At Alpine Lake Suites breathing comes naturally!
At this weeks pot luck Jamaican, Quebecois, and Spanish accents sang Bob Marley songs with a banjo accompaniment.
Our stay here for two nights was most enjoyable (and incredibly economical). We stayed with our two teenagers and they enjoyed the sleeping options of bedroom vs. futon couch. The radiant heat is real heat and the fireplace added a real homey touch. Incredibly quiet throughout day and night (There is a curfew for noise! and older building = thicker walls!). We fully recommend this suite to anyone.
Thank you so much for providing a wonderful retreat home, within minutes to the beach. I would recommend this unit to anyone visiting Nelson because of its superb location, cleanliness and ammenities. The caretaker and his wife were very friendly and helpful. Enjoy your stay in beautiful British Columbia!
This was my first summer in Nelson, BC. I was very happy with my stay at the Alpine Lake Suites...this suite had all the comforts of home and provided lots of space for visiting and the option of cooking our own meals. The property is ideally located a couple of blocks from the beach, and close to grocery stores as well as the great dining out options in Nelson. Ray was helpful with restaurant and activity recommendations including hiking in the old growth forest, visiting Kootenay Provincial Park and nearby hot springs. I would totally recommend this suite for summer or winter getaways
I loved staying in the suite because it was so clean and spacious. The view of the lake out the window was breathtaking. The location of the suites is also great because it is only a couple of blocks away from the beach. Karen and Ray and their boys were wonderful and went above and beyond to make my family feel at home and checked in regularly to make sure we were happy and comfortable. The suites also have a court yard where their are many different toys and nets you can borrow and the kids can meet some friends. I hope to be back soon and wouldn't consider staying any where else!!!
What a wonderful place! Karen, Ray and their two wonderful boys are so welcoming and receptive. Every time I have stayed there, this family has gone above and beyond the call of duty. They are truly great at opening up boundless opportunities for your stay in Nelson. The space was perfect for my romantic getaway and my family trip. I will most definitely come back again! (Hopefully sooner rather than later)
My friend, her adult daughter & I found this delightful, affordable property to stay at when visiting Nelson. The location was in a quiet neighbourhood and included a beautiful view overlooking Kootenay Lake and easy walk to downtown (even in the winter!). The suite was very spacious offering all the amenities that you would ever want. The decor was tastefully done, the bathroom was immaculate and a good size, the rooms were clean, comfortable & the kitchen was fully stocked: a pleasure to stay! Karen & Ray made us feel at home immediately and they were an enthusiastic wealth of information as to restaurants, shops, spas & places that were a 'must see': customer service at its best! Thanks for a great stay: we'll be Back!
