Sullivan’s Island is one of the oldest and most unique beach communities on the East Coast. Founded in 1671, Sullivan’s Island has played a key role in our nation’s history. It was the site of one of the first victories over the British during the American Revolution, 40% of all slaves traded in North American landed on Sullivan’s Island and the first shots of the Civil War were fired from the Island. In the middle of this history is 1705 Atlantic Avenue. With just over 5,000 square feet and featuring six bedrooms with five full baths, 1705 Atlantic Avenue is ideally located oceanfront and overlooking a natural low country maritime forest. The private walk from the home to the ocean through the maritime forest is like taking a step back in time when Edgar Allan Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie and wrote the Gold Bug as he walked in this same forest. Once through this remarkable setting, your family will be in awe as you overlook the Atlantic Ocean with Sullivan’s Island Light House to your north and Charleston Harbor to the South. At this point of the Island it almost feels you are alone since the maritime forest covers all other structures. The beauty of the beach in this area cannot be matched anywhere on the East Coast.
The main floor is incredibly open and is flanked on all sides by floor-to-ceiling windows which overlook the home’s yard and the Maritime Forest. The Great Room serves as a central gathering space for friends and family and there is a large dining room alcove for family meals. The kitchen, off the Great Room, has abundant natural light as well as ample counter space, plenty of cabinets, and a large eat-in area. One of the best features of this floor is the massive wrap-around porch. Crack open one of three sets of French doors and let the fresh ocean breeze filter in or enjoy a dinner al fresco on the porch! Three of the home’s six bedrooms are located on this main level, including a spacious guest suite with a walk-in closet and en suite bathroom. The master suite encompasses the entire third floor and is also ocean-facing. Floor to ceiling windows flood the room with warm sunlight and there is access to a private sunning porch and deck. The ground level of the home was designed as an efficiency or separate guest quarters. In addition to a large game room, there are two bedrooms with en suite full bathrooms, a cozy den with a fireplace as well as a full kitchen. Outside, you will find a large yard that has been landscaped with native plants and palmetto trees. The in-ground pool is perfect for warm summer days and is fenced-in for privacy (hot tub pictured is not in operation). There is also a large deck surrounding the pool.
Walk in the footsteps of Edgar Allan Poe during your next visit to Charleston’s beaches while staying at 1705 West Atlantic Avenue. Walk or bike to Fort Moultrie, historical structures like Stella Maris Catholic Church, or one of many outstanding restaurants on Middle Street. You and your family will have an outstanding vacation at this beautiful home, 1705 West Atlantic Avenue, Sullivan’s Island.
