Close to the hustle without the bustle. This beautiful home and (optional) cabin on Lake Michigan are situated within 15 minutes of St. Ignace (where you catch the ferry to Mackinac Island) on beautiful Pointe aux Chenes Bay. The entire bay is protected bird sanctuary and you can’t see the neighbors’ houses, so you feel like you have your own private bay all to yourselves. Unlike many of the lake front places in the U.P. that are cold and rocky, there is a shallow, warm, sandy beach. It is perfect for families with little ones who prefer the shallow, calm water. Directly in front of the house/cabin are reeds and muck so you do have to walk down the beach a little bit to get to the sandy part, but it is a very pretty and easy walk of about 200 feet so even the littlest ones can do it. Less than a mile west down U.S. 2 (or by walking along the beach) are the big-waved sand dune beaches for those that prefer a little more excitement. Less than ¼ mile up Brevort Lake Road are the trail heads of the Hiawatha National Forest. Hiking, biking, bird watching and just kicking back to relax are yours to enjoy. If you are up early you can watch a beautiful sunrise and will likely see a mated pair of Sandhill Cranes doing their morning calls and dance in the front yard. The cranes stand close together, calling in a synchronized and complex duet. With their 6-8 foot wing spans it is quite a spectacular sight and worth getting up early to see.
We intended the place to be a place where we could relax and completely unplug so there is no cable or internet. The TV picks up a few local channels and most cell phones work just fine so if you have access to the internet through your phone you'll be ok. Otherwise, there are plenty of restaurants and the library in town which have free wi-fi. There are also many books, puzzles, games and movies provided for your enjoyment.
The cabin rents separately from the main house for $600 per week plus $50 cleaning fee so there may be other guests on the property. If you want the privacy of the entire place to yourselves you can rent the house & cabin together for $1,500 + $250 cleaning fee ($250 more total).
If you are interested in just the cabin, it can accommodate 2 small adults in a full sized bedroom and 1 or 2 small children on a fold out couch in the living room. We say 'small' adults because the shower is very narrow and there is no bathtub. There is a full sized refrigerator, a small oven & stove, dishes, utensils, etc., but no microwave. There is a gas grill, outdoor chairs, a fire pit and linens and towels are provided.
In total the house can sleep 10 and the cabin can sleep 4 (if queen and full beds each sleep 2). If everyone wants his/her own bed then the house sleeps 6 and the cabin sleeps 2 (with one on a pullout couch).
If you are looking for a remote, quiet get away with spectacular views this is it. We were very comfortable in this three bedroom sprawling lake house. The spacious deck is very accommodating for patio grilling and bird watching or just staring out at the sparkling water. It was hard to bring myself to the patio when you can relax in the living area on one of three huge sofas and see just as well through all the windows. Perfect for reading, napping or enjoying the view. Tons of space for entertaining at the kitchen bar or dining table including another high top table with bar stools. There is a little road you can walk down to get to the shore or if you are wearing sturdy shoes you can traipse through the grassy area which can be rather prickly.
Being this remote and with plenty of shallow waters there were some mosquitos and bugs, but not enough to keep us from enjoying ourselves. Also, there was a note left by the owner about not drinking the water. A water cooler is available for drinking and making coffee. We brushed our teeth and showered normally.
This is a quiet cabin with a captivating view of the lake. There was no tv and no internet access. Phones worked fine on Verizon. If you want to watch anything you'll need to rent a video from the store in town.
We throughly enjoyed our stay. Really miss the view.
Only 10 miles outside of St. Ignace where you can catch the boats to Mackinac Island or drive across the awesome Mackinaw Bridge to tour the village of Mackinaw City. Across the street are the trailheads for hiking the beautiful Hiawatha National Forest and less than an hour away is beautiful Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Only an hour away is Sault Ste. Marie, gateway to Canada and home to the Soo Locks, some of the largest shipping locks in the world.
