This unique 3-level house is IN the jungle canopy and sulks above the exquisite West Bay Beach. The ocean view only enhances your delight at being on an exotic vacation as you sip a morning tea or coffee on the deck. You can usually spot an iguana or two in a nearby tree and occasionally macaws fly overhead, while a variety of exotic birds and lizards of all descriptions cavort in the trees all day long. Down on the ground you'll see Honduran rabbits darting in and out of the landscape. The rabbits look a lot like rat-colored guinea pigs, but bigger, and they love apple cores (West Bay Mall DELI sells the entire apple and most everything else you'll need). The house, artist-built and designed, is small, private, secure, perfect for two people and cute as can be. Small, i.e., a conservative yet good functioning and well-designed simple 16 x 16 feet each floor with an 8' x16' deck on each level. Level one serves as the artist/owners painting studio when in residence and the outdoor shower is on that level. Up eleven (more) steps leads to the air-conditioned bedroom/bathroom/shower and on the top level is the kitchen 'great room' living room, complete with bar seating and a chandelier. Top deck has outdoor seating as well w/square patio furniture and hammocks. Ceiling fans are at each level if you prefer the luxury of ocean breeze. Price includes air conditioning but please practice energy conservation with both power and electric. It's still the same planet facing the same issues. Random power outage rolls on Roatan and there may be several occasions when you have none for a few hours. It comes back. Keep a flashlight handy.
Be informed: the stairway to this house takes you from sea level to +190' in short order. Don't pick this property if you are fat, frail, or in poor health (or have a heart condition...) because the steps are a built-in mandatory Stair-master. Seriously. As Yoga practicing, Zumba dancing, ski guides and swim/bike enthusiasts, we love this detail, but it's not for everyone. I don't want you to be surprised and then disappointed by having to walk up the equivalent of a 7 story building twice a day, and what if you forget your pencil?
There are a few more interior photos on the website roatanlife and you can find them there at 235000-Very-Cute-West-Bay-House-490.
Although I will always refer you my property management company for reservation questions, my direct email is susanschiesser -at- comcast-dot-net for ideas and answers about restaurants, bugs and Cayos Cachinos.
We love this house.

My husband and I met skiing in the mountains of Colorado and continue to live in the Rocky Mountains, but we LOVE the ocean. Ever since we honeymooned in Bali, we've looked for a beach house. Then we discovered the beauty of Roatan and West Bay Beach with the lovely people, spectacular snorkeling and diving and big fun. A bit of research later and we knew we had to invest. It was the right house at the right location, and here we are. As a professional artist/painter, the island is a constant source of inspiration for my work (on Projekt30). My husband and I enjoy the kick back lifestyle. Good restaurants are close-by and wild nightlife is a boat taxi ride away in West End. So many of our friends have enjoyed the house, we decided to try a larger audience.
We hope you'll enjoy discovering all that Roatan has to offer. You'll want to keep coming back too! Rex & Susan, Steamboat Springs, Colorado
The Owner purchased this house in 2008
On our first visit to the island, we spent some time looking at real estate. Several days later I was at the beach at Infinity Bay and met another artist. During our conversation I mentioned looking for but not finding a house to buy. She said, 'I just finished building one and it's right there,' pointing to the mountainside just above Infinity Bay Resort. I instantly knew we would love it. Then we met the stairway with it's 86+ steps, and we still loved it. As a gourmet cook, I was surprised to find an amazing variety of ingredients available at the local deli one block away. What you don't find there will be at Eldon's in French Harbor. Organic lettuces and fresh herbs... even Horizon milk is here, plus, the Spanish, French and Italian cheese selections are better than what I find in Colorado. The direct Denver/Houston/Roatan flight: is easier than Hawaii. The house is little and simple and easy.
One of my favorite things to do here is spend time at Anthony Key experiencing the various dolphin activities. Do it all. They are simply amazing creatures.
A boat trip to Cayos ca Chinos is a must do. We always go there with Extreme Charters. It's quite an adventure and different every time.
Mondays and Wednesdays are Free Movie Nights down at Bananarama on the beach and Sundays there's firedance performances and a crab races. Night walks on the beach are great and don't forget to try a Monkey Lala.
The mountain side cottage had two amazing ocean views from the first and second floor balconies. It was a very ideal location with slight seclusion along West Bay Area of Roatan that provided a relaxing calm. Restaurants, bars, the beach, dive charters and other water sport activities, and a spa all within walking distance. Just a short walk to the beach also gave me access to a water taxi, about $6 got me to West End area of the island. The produce pick up truck that occasionally drove around was a nice treat too with having a kitchen. Each place and person that I came in contact with was very welcoming. I traveled solo most of the week and never felt unsafe. Btw... With many great restaurants around, eating was some what guilt free with the daily climb of the many steps.
This is a nice place for couples with simple needs who want to get away from the busy and sometimes noisy beach area. The view from the upper deck of this house is excellent and the stairs are no big deal for anyone in decent shape. The washer/dryer is a great extra feature and they also lend you a phone with 20 or 30 minutes of local service on it - just what you need to arrange for taxis or dives. The air conditioning worked perfectly and there are screens on all of the windows to let in evening breezes. There are beautiful hardwood floors, granite countertops, big frig, and colorful, freshly painted walls.
There are a few basic items missing, most importantly a microwave to heat leftovers, the stereo mentioned in the VRBO listing, a spatula to flip eggs, a clock, and decent sized coffee maker to replace the little Motel 6 model. With no internet, TV, DVD player, radio or stereo you'll want to pack a laptop with a few movies loaded on it plus a portable alarm clock if you're catching an early flight home. If they add a few of those items I would return some day.
That house is cute. It's small yet had everything I needed but a proper teapot . It was sort of like camping in a nice tall jungle treehouse/cabin. The views were good, it was comfortable and clean, and it is a short walk to the beach. Roatan is Hot and the power shuts down all over the island atleast once a week and at different times, and for several hours. All the big hotels have giant roaring generators that keep everything powered up during the rolling brown-outs and this house just has a tiny one. I never used it because by the time I fugured it out the power came back on, and of course it was dark.... dah.
After a day or so one begins to recognize the deeper meaning of "you're not in Kansas anymore" because seeing Horizon milk at the market lulls you into a false sense of familiarity plus everyone is speaking english. Roatan doesn't initially feel as foreign as other places. One could have a more conventional "Westernized" experience by staying at one of the big exclusive hotels but then, why not just go to Hawaii or Cancun. That's an easy vacation experience you're seeking.
I've tried various island accomodations both ways... big hotel and little house and my choice varies by mood, mission, and season. If you're high-maintenance, don't stay here. It's kick-back, old school island-style. It suited my needs and I would do it again, although I try to never do the same thing twice.
