Guestbook comments from the owner
Casa Cacao is a beautiful place...We truly enjoyed the home's design, comfort and functionality. Your furnishings, linens and amenities in general were ideal following a 3 week road trip crisscrossing Costa Rica. The laundry duo are to die for...would have liked to bring them home with us. The TV/satellite/WiFi are spectacular...especially loved the music channels.

Our ten day stay in Cocles enhanced our love for the area's beaches, flora and fauna, restaurants and overall friendly atmosphere. Casa Cacao provided an oasis after each day of discovery. Even the weather was great with limited rainfall and great surf. We were astounded at the wide selection at the 'Super Cocles' market, a most convenient neighborhood asset.

Friends brought me to this part of Costa Rica in 2003 and I fell in love with the friendly community of Cocles. From the first night listening to the frogs, birds and monkeys, I was hooked and decided I had to find a way to return.

I purchased the Cocoa Hill property in 2006, and completed the first home the following year, I have built 4 others at Cocoa Hill and have maintained the Caribbean architectural style. I wanted a property that was close enough to the beach, the grocery store and restaurants to walk or ride my bike.

Cocoa Hill was a former cacao plantation, and there are still many cacao trees on the property along with many other massive grand-father hardwoods.

Lovely!

Jungle Shangri-la is all that it says it is! Well appointed and comfortable. Near amenties yet felt secluded. Though part of a five home gated community the landscaping provided privacy and we never encountered the neigbors. We were a party of four and found the house had enough indoor and outdoor space for us to gather as a group as well as areas to slip off. Loved being able to open all the doors onto the porch! Wi-fi and tv (used to watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve) Not mentioned or photographed is the large bathroom with a very generous shower that is screened in on one side that affords a garden view yet complete privacy. We had a car making beaches, restaurants and shopping just minutes away though lots of people seemed to use bikes to get around. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances, pots, pans and utensils. We used mainly to make breakfast eating lunch and dinner out. Had outstanding meals at every restaurant we tried! Used TripAdvisor to guide us. Most restaurants are very small 6-10 tables so be sure to make reservations. As someone mentioned "Bread and Chocolate" is a must (breakfast and lunch only). Draws a crowd so be prepared for a short wait Tables tend to turn over quickly though. The Jaguar Rescue Center was an abosulte highlight and the private tour is well worth the money and supports the great work they do. Last words - go and enjoy!

Shangri-la is an apt description!

This is a wonderful home that is designed to bring the outdoors in--you actually get the tactile eel of living in a jungle paradise. There's always a nice breeze that wafts through the open doors and windows, making it very comfortable. The patio is a great place to relax and enjoy casual visits from native creatures--a family of peacocks visited every day, and a big, beautiful morpho butterfly flew past as we enjoyed our coffee (another regional treat). The house is centrally located to afford easy access to all the beaches and activities surrounding Playa Cocles & Puerto Viejo. There are some excellent restaurants--in particular Malbec's, which is owned and operated by a lovely Argentinian couple. The food, atmosphere and service will rival the best restaurant in any metropolitan area.

Staying here was an experience to remember for years to come. A couple of tips: there's no WiFi and bring your own hair dryer (minor details). We had an excellent stay, and I hope to repeat the experience soon. I recommend it and feel certain you will not be disappointed.

Good location and better than the pics

  • 4 of 5
The location in Cocles is perfect. The house is just 1/4 mile from 2 perfect beach accesses, one north, and one south. At the beach access to the north there's surfboard rentals and lessons. The one to the south is just behind a cool beach front restaurant that is still somehow in the jungle.

We were able to walk to yoga classes above the Carrabeans coffee shop, where you do your poses on a second story open air loft facing the sea and are treated not only to the ocean view but wild horses roaming the land between the studio and the beach. Pretty cool.
Also there s a market not a 2 minute walk south where you can get staples, and alcohol (wait, that is a staple) .

Peurto Viejo is a 5 minute drive or a ten minute bike ride, as is Punta Uva beach in the other direction. Punta Uva is the place to go if you want a tropical, idyllic, quiet , cocoanut palm beach almost to yourself.

The house itself has a great layout. The bathroom is between the two bedrooms and who ever gets there first can lock the other bedroom door from inside the bath.
The water pressure was adequate and the gas stove is a plus. The washer and dryer are in a little separate room and work well.

One drawback is that the walls are all latticed at the top (which keeps the house cool) but slightly dampens privacy. So you can hear the washer very well from the adjacent bedroom, and you can carry on a conversation from any adjacent room, but on the other hand the openness of the house is one of it best attributes.

Opening all six doors at the front of the house is a beautiful thing, all the benefits of being outside and inside at the same time.

The house is part of a 5 home gated community and at the entrance is a very helpful couple that helped us with the alarm system and internet. The wifi was not working while we were there but we were able to hard wire and still had use of the internet.

Two good restaurants nearby are Con Fusion a little north and Pita Bonita, a little south.
In Puerto Viejo "Bread and Chocolate" is a must.
Also in Puerto you can have beers at 4-5 different bars along the beach within 50 feet of the water.

We are a short walk or bike ride from a variety of awesome beaches, surf beaches, snorkeling, you name it. In the other direction are 40,000 acres of virgin rainforest, abundant with wildlife, toucans, monkeys, jungle cats. This is a great place to swim or hike and just enjoy the marvels of nature.
