PETFRIENDLY WILDERNESS RETREAT IN SAN DIEGO BACKCOUNTRY

Julian Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Private Luxurious Safari Tent in fenced compound with Hot Tub

Located in one of the most beautiful, least traveled areas of San Diego County, this unique accommodation was created by a artisan contractor couple with comfort and privacy in mind while offering a close to nature experience. It is a 16x20 fireproof safari tent on a 16 x 33' deck with handcrafted railings, furniture and details. The tent cabin has full kitchen designed for people who like to cook , a spacious bath with clawfoot tub, queen size bed with heated mattress, gas fireplace and deck that overlooks Oak Grove Valley. There is a small TV with DVD player and WIFI, ceiling fans inside and on the covered porch. New Hot tub on the deck as well as 2 chaise lounges and dining set for alfresco dining. The deck is designed to keep your pets in if you do not want them to have access to the yard area which is totally fenced with no-climb wire. It is suited for 2 people and is located on a private ranch in which the owners preside. Our motto is 'you won't see us unless you need us' and we value our guests privacy so we leave them alone unless needed. Pets are welcome but because of deck elevation, it is not suitable for young children.

The tent cabin opens to the outdoors at each end for views of the chaparral forest and can be closed during bad weather or evening. This exposure to nature has a wonderful relaxing effect and the japanese call it 'shinrin-yoku' which translates to 'forest bathing', or being surrounded by a forest environment. It may not seem like therapy but forest bathing has been shown to improve mental and physical health. Studies have documented reduced stress, lower blood sugar, better concentration, diminished pain, improved immunity and even anti-cancer effects.

The main draw to this area is it natural beauty, remoteness, privacy, abundant hiking and biking trails, leash free dog trails and winery's.

Lane and I are artists/craftsman/contractors who love nature, hiking, animals and working with our hands. We get a bang out of creating spaces, transforming ugly to beautiful and providing a place for people to unwind.

Laurie Roberts purchased this cabin in 2011

We looked for a long time to find a place that was semi remote that would be good setting for wilderness vacation rental and that had a fixer house on it. We found this 10 acres with adobe home built in the 40's, an old walnut grove and knew it was the one because of the beautiful view of the valley, it was surrounded by nature rather than neighborhood and it bordered on Cleveland National Forest land. We spent 2 years restoring/remodeling the house, putting in fruit trees and garden and in January 2013, came up with the safari tent concept as a vacation rental.

Total privacy, fenced compound for your dogs, gorgeous view and incredible night skies. The tent opens at each end during the day and close it at night. Surrounding yourself with nature and it's sounds have a very relaxing effect that you cannot get in a walled in structure. The Japanese call this 'shinrin-yoku' which translates to forest bathing, or being surrounded by a forest environment which has been shown to improve mental and physical health.

Simply The Best

  • 5 of 5
I took my wife here for her birthday along with my dog...it was our first time ever taking our dog on vacation with us...it was PERFECT! We are city folk...I think our dog loved this place ALMOST as much as us...he for the first time had his own yard! He ran around and popped in and out of the tent...he really enjoyed it there.

For the humans...it was so relaxing! We spent an entire day in the hot tub...and relaxing on the deck listening to nature... The bed was comfortable...we slept like babies...we cooked all our meals there with the help of Don's Market down the road...we barely left two trips to Don's the rest of the trip we relaxed...recharged...reconnected...while the dog played in his own yard! The perfect vacation! The perfect place!

The only warning I will give is heater as well as cooking all on same propane tank...we ran out of propane...the owners filled it right away so it wasn't a problem...but had we known we might not have baked chicken for two hours!

Check out the furniture here as well...the owners make it themselves...they didn't have business cards and I do not remember the website otherwise I would have ordered it by now...the furniture here is BEAUTIFUL!

Enjoy your stay we rent lots of places on homeaway this is for sure on my top two list!

We loved staying at Camp Ribbonwood.

  • 5 of 5
Our short stay was very relaxing and the jacuzzi is a nice bonus. We only stayed two nights and didn't have time to use the pizza oven, but that is another great feature. The large fenced deck was great for the dogs along with the fenced yard. The dogs loved the breeze going through the tent. My husband loved the privacy and the bed is very comfortable. It was chilly the second night, but we were very warm, without using the heater for the bed. The small fireplace heats up the tent nicely, but we turned it off while sleeping. Very nice views from the deck. The only issues we found were that the floor got somewhat wet when showering, but we just used a towel to wipe it up. Also, if you are very tall, my husband said it might be hard to stand in the bathroom. Not an issue for me, or him, though. I would suggest driving a truck or SUV, as the driveway to the tent is steep and has ruts in it, and after a rain could be hard to ascend. Small or low cars might have difficulty getting up the hill. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed it, and being that Camp Ribbonwood is in San Diego county, we will return...that is as long as we plan ahead...this place books up way in advance. You will see why if you ever get to stay there!

Ultimate Glamping Experience

  • 5 of 5
We had been planning a visit to Camp Ribbonwood for a while. The property is exactly as pictured and described. We were impressed by the details present in every inch of the accommodations. We love traveling with our furry, four legged son & seek out dog friendly properties. This one is outstanding! The property is clean & fresh and they have outfitted it with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed its remote seeming location and it is ideal for a romantic getaway. Relaxing in the hot tub under the stars was the perfect end to a fun filled day spent playing fetch with the pooch, hiking on the trails around the property & kicking back on the deck. We are fortunate - Camp Ribbonwood is just a short drive for us because we intend to return again as soon as possible.

A one-of-a-kind experience!

  • 5 of 5
I found this gem while looking for pet-friendly places in Julian. There are only a few that exsist, however, most have many restrictions, require deposits, etc. Camp Ribbonwood was built with pets in mind, which is amazing in itself! We adore our two "girls" and it is hard to travel without them. For one having to pay a babysitter and two, we miss them terribly when we are away! They were in paradise here, running free, chasing eachother and sniffing every square inch.
My husband and I were here to celebrate my birthday and our wedding anniversary. We brought some DVD's, watched some that were already there, cooked, went in the spa and relaxed. They have really thought of everything here. It was mid 30's at night and the heater and the heated blanket kept us plenty warm. They have built in every ammnity you could need, and more, for a "glamping" experience. The spa was hot and ready for us upon arrival (no waiting hours for it to heat). We didn't open the gate all weekend, just stayed inside the fence and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the craftsmanship that went into building this. Thank you so much for creating such a serene place for us to visit!

Amazingly Unique, Dog-friendly Getaway

  • 5 of 5
Wow! What an amazing place! I wanted a nice, quiet place to take my girlfriend for a quick vacation where our dog would be welcome. We try to take him wherever we go, and Camp Ribbonwood was one of the best, and most unique dog-friendly places we've been to. It is absolutely a one-of-a-kind place!

We took advantage of all the amenities including the hot tub and BBQ pizza oven. It was our first time ever making pizza from scratch and we able to make some great pizza thanks to our hosts, Laurie and Lane, who gave us some scrap wood from Lane's wood shop.

Speaking of Laurie and Lane, when they say their motto is "you won't see us unless you need us and we take our guest's privacy very seriously," they really mean it. We felt like we were all alone in our very own private escape. And we it came time to check out, Laurie generously allowed us to stay long beyond our check out time since nobody was checking in that day. That allowed us to really enjoy a leisurely morning on our last day.

We definitely want to come back, but it looks like we'll have to wait awhile. Apparently, the word on this great place has gotten out.

Romantic Safari Tent Glamping!

  • 5 of 5
I honestly don't know where to start. Our stay was nothing less than brilliant. We stayed for 2 nights and didn't want to leave. It's an oasis away from everything...with great wi-fi, an amazing outdoor bath, perfect DVD collection, full kitchen, grill with a pizza oven attached, a hot tub and so much more. If we had dogs, we would have been even happier campers, as the owners have secured the property and even had water bowls and doggie beds available. However, I wouldn't have even known it was animal friendly...it was super clean and just smelled like...fresh air. We were lucky with the weather...it was late August...forecast called for 90 degrees and thunderstorms...instead we had a few sprinkles, overcast days and perfect temperatures...I couldn't have asked for better conditions. During the day we even used the hot tub as a swimming pool of sorts, as there was no need for heat, but at night we were able to heat it up and soak as we watched millions of stars. The tent has a heater and personalized heating blankets on the bed, but we didn't need those, perhaps we will get to use those amenities in the winter, we can't wait to get back to Camp Ribbonwood. Bugs aren't a problem for the most part...they only come around if you have bright lights on...so we turned off the lights and we were bug free! The owners are super nice and accommodating. My only worry is that this review will attract many more visitors and I secretly want to keep this gem to myself. xo
