Harrisonburg Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Please Read Entire Description & Listing:

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BOOK THROUGH THE BOOK IT NOW, JUST PUT THE NUMBER OF ADULTS. ADD A NOTE OF HOW MANY KIDS THERE ARE AND WE WILL CHANGE IT IN THE RESERVATION. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO BOOK IT YOURSELF AND NOT HAVE THE EXTRA FEES.

Gum Run Cabin (Please see all the details below)

We remodeled Gum Run Cabin the end of June 2013. We updated the entire kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances and new counter tops and new cabinets as well. This is a real cabin that was originally built as a Summer getaway that has been updated. Because of this the cabin has a lot of charm and touches that new construction does not have. If you are looking for a brand new cabin built for use just as a vacation rental, then this cabin may not be for you... this cabin has real character and offers a glimpse into the past. :) We think its history is part of what makes it special.

The bathroom has also been completely redone. There is now a double shower / tub combo. The cabin has a rough cut pine exterior and a western red cedar interior. There is also a nice screen wrap around porch out front. The cabin is a two bedroom cabin (both queen size beds) with a loft. The loft has very low ceilings (best for kids or teenagers). It has four single mattresses on the floor in it. As of right now, we built a custom cedar ladder for access to the loft. Kids under 4 years old should probably not climb the ladder into the loft.

There is a wood stove in the living room with real river rock stone hand picked from the stream on our property (wood stove will be available for use by late February hopefully.. it is in the cabin already, but not hooked for usage yet.). Firewood must be purchased on site for both indoor and outdoor fires. If you let us know in advance we'll even have a fire going for you when you arrive (once wood stove is up and running). :)

Pets are always welcome but we do require a pet fee. There is a chicken coop at this property that we will need to tend to during the day. At times we do let the chickens free range, but they are very friendly. Please also note that the cabin is located in a forest in the mountains. There will be wildlife outside the cabin. Because this is a real cabin, there may things you should expect to find in a real cabin located in the forest such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs and occasional stink bugs during certain times of the year.

On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars overhead. It is a beautiful sight. Also during the spring and summer months, you can see humming birds everywhere. We place feeders off the front porch of the house and have personally seen upwards of 20 birds feeding on them at one time in the area.

Checking is 4:00 pm and checkout is 11 am.

Pets are welcome at all of our properties. If you or someone in your group is allergic to pets or anything else (detergent, air fresheners, etc), please let us know in advance so we can discuss this prior to your booking and then also prior to your arrival.

This cabin has a window unit a/c in the living room. We have not had anyone complain about it being too hot and the window unit has met with everyone's approval thus far. Please be aware of this prior to booking the cabin. We want all of our guests to be more than satisfied.

The cabin is on a well... sometimes the well, depending on the water table will put out iron water that can appear orange at times and stain the toilet and bathtub. This is not harmful in any way, it just looks strange in the bathtub. We do have an expensive water treatment system set up to treat the water, but the water is sometimes too strong for the treatment system. There is also an occasional sulphur smell in the water as well (more often with hot water usage than with cold). This too is not harmful, but it can strong depending on the water table. The drinking water through the refrigerator though.

About Katie & Steven Robert Jones

We came to Virginia from Texas so I (Steven) could finish my college degree, but got into the vacation rental business by accident. :) We have three daughters under the age of 5. We have 8 rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats, 2 ponies, 8 goats & about 50 chickens.

We believe service is what sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 or 3 in the morning). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin, unlike most other rentals where you access a lock box and walk into a dark cold house. If it is Winter time and you let us know in advance that you want a fire, we'll even have a real wood burning fire going for you. We are always available. We live right here on the mountain and we really mean it when we say that we are always available. If you need us at 4 am or have a problem, please do not ever hesitate to let us know. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. We would be honored if you would allow us the opportunity to serve you.

Why Katie & Steven Robert Jones chose Harrisonburg

This cabin is in a great location. Whippoorwills are very common in the Spring to early Summer months as are Hummingbirds. The sound of Gum Run rushing by about 100 yards across the front yard is very peaceful.

What makes this cabin unique

There are 3 hiking trails within walking distance of the cabin (two of which can only be accessed from from our private land). There are numerous other trails within a very short drive of the cabin.

Great Cabin. Recommended.

  • 5 of 5

We felt very welcome and the owners were great and the cabin was perfect. Everything was just as we had hoped it would be. The cabin was even cuter than in the photos. Definitely coming back! Recommended.

Beautiful Cabin In The National Forest

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was wonderfully prepared. At my arrival I was greeted with warm hospitality by both Katie and Steven. They showed me the new stone work that was done on the fireplace/chimney and it really made the cabin look amazing. Had a nice quiet evening and was easily able to relax in such a warm and cozy environment. Was easily able to go town for everything I needed since stores and shopping were so close. Took so time to go for a nice walk along the river. The area was very beautiful. Stars were so bright too. Already looking forward to returning and bringing my wife and kids next time.

Exactly as listed, no major probs, would recommend

  • 4 of 5

The listing description accurately described everything about the cabin. It was very easy to find based on the directions provided and not at all difficult to reach even with my small car (one of the things we were worried about when looking at other similar rentals). All of the appliances/amenities were in good working condition and we had no problems with them. The cookware was usable but not great. They have all of the basic things that you will need to prepare meals.

Overall the property was well maintained and clean, however we had a big problem with the iron in the water supply. The presence of iron is warned about in the listing but it was much worse than we were expecting. Turning on the kitchen sink or even the shower brought on a horrendous smell. The fridge has a built in water filter but even combining that pre-filtered water with our Brita filter water bottles the bad taste was still able to get through. Because of this I would recommend bringing bottled water to drink. Showering also left us with a slight smell of iron on our skin. Katie told us when we arrived that the freezing and thawing of the pipes was causing the iron to be especially bad so it may be better in the warmer times of the year if this concerns you. This was really our only problem with the place over our 2 day stay and the only reason for my rating of 4 stars instead of 5.

We did not really need any service while we were there so I cannot comment much on customer service, but Katie was very nice and welcoming to us on our arrival and it was evident that they take this very seriously and really cared about the quality of our stay.

I would recommend this property to anyone, but with a warning about the iron problem. It was great for the price and we had a really nice experience staying here.

There is not much to do in the area attraction-wise, but after reading about another resident's experience in the guest book we took a trip farther up the mountain to Switzer lake and enjoyed the views. If you're looking for a place to do some hiking and enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountain then I would recommend trying this out. It was about a 15 minute drive up the mountain and then about another 10 minute drive down a dirt road alongside the mountain to get to the lake.

Lovely cabin near National Forest...

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is quaint and peaceful. Situated very close to the George Washington National Forest which allows for a fairly easy, but beautiful hike. The cabin was exactly as described. The family (Katie and Steven) were there to check us in and were very nice and hospitable. The cabin overall was quite comfortable and cozy. The beds slept very well, also.

One fairly significant issue that should be noted from our visit were what appeared to be mice. The first night we did see a mouse scurrying on the screened-in porch. Throughout the rest of the stay we would hear a mouse or two scurrying within the walls or above the ceiling. This freaked out the kids a bit and would come down from the loft in the middle of the night in order to sleep in the second bedroom. If it were just me and my wife, it would not have been an issue, but due to the fact that it upset the kids, I thought it should be something to share with others with kids who may be considering this cabin.

Otherwise, the cabin was wonderful and would definitely consider returning again if we end up in that part of Virginia again.

Exactly as Described, Idyllic Location

  • 5 of 5

We arrived late afternoon, and Katie was quick to follow to let us in and show us around. She's very personable and made us feel right at home - even offered to get a few supplies from "in town" if we noticed anything amiss. The cabin is outfitted perfectly for our needs; the beds in the loft were perfect for the kiddos (ages 6-6-7). The two bedrooms were small, briefly appointed, and very comfortable. The pillows were so nice, in fact, that if I'd had a bigger bag I may have snuck one home... just kidding. But comfortable! We enjoyed a nice fire for an hour or so one night - other nights were just too chilly. The kids loved running through the woods and leaves, and visiting the neighbors farm animals. All technology works great and as described; the kitchen is lacking a few things, notably a good condition skillet with unscathed non-stick coating. We brought our own muffin pan, but if I hadn't asked I would have been frustrated. Our only issue - which was out of control of Katie - is the water pressure was down to a trickle since our arrival. They seemed so alarmed about it - and I didn't see it in any other reviews - so it surely is an anomaly. We do plan on returning in 2015, maybe for a longer stay!
