Harrisonburg Cabin Rental Photos and Description

2 bedroom 1 bath Cabin Just across road from Gum Run (a native trout stream)

HOMEAWAY HAS CHANGED THEIR POLICIES: KIDS ARE NOW BEING CHARGED THROUGH THE BOOK IT NOW OPTION. WE DO NOT CHARGE FOR KIDS UNDER 18. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BOOK THROUGH THE BOOK IT NOW, JUST PUT THE NUMBER OF ADULTS. ADD A NOTE OF HOW MANY KIDS THERE ARE AND WE WILL CHANGE IT IN THE RESERVATION. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO BOOK IT YOURSELF AND NOT HAVE THE EXTRA FEES.

Gum Run Cabin (Please see all the details below)

We remodeled Gum Run Cabin the end of June 2013. We updated the entire kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances and new counter tops and new cabinets as well. This is a real cabin that was originally built as a Summer getaway that has been updated. Because of this the cabin has a lot of charm and touches that new construction does not have. If you are looking for a brand new cabin built for use just as a vacation rental, then this cabin may not be for you... this cabin has real character and offers a glimpse into the past. :) We think its history is part of what makes it special.

The bathroom has also been completely redone. There is now a double shower / tub combo. The cabin has a rough cut pine exterior and a western red cedar interior. There is also a nice screen wrap around porch out front. The cabin is a two bedroom cabin (both queen size beds) with a loft. The loft has very low ceilings (best for kids or teenagers). It has four single mattresses on the floor in it. As of right now, we built a custom cedar ladder for access to the loft. Kids under 5 should probably not climb the ladder into the loft.

Pets are always welcome but we do require a pet fee. There is a chicken coop at this property that we will need to tend to during the day. Please also note that the cabin is located in a forest in the mountains. There will be wildlife outside the cabin. Because this is a real cabin, there may things you should expect to find in a real cabin located in the forest such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs and occasional stink bugs during certain times of the year.

On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars overhead. It is a beautiful sight. Also during the spring and summer months, you can see humming birds everywhere. We place feeders off the front porch of the house and have personally seen upwards of 20 birds feeding on them at one time in the area.

Checking is 4:00 pm and checkout is 11 am.

Pets are welcome at all of our properties. If you or someone in your group is allergic to pets or anything else (detergent, air fresheners, etc), please let us know in advance so we can discuss this prior to your booking and then also prior to your arrival.

This cabin has a window unit a/c in the living room. We have not had anyone complain about it being too hot and the window unit has met with everyone's approval thus far. Please be aware of this prior to booking the cabin. We want all of our guests to be more than satisfied.

The cabin is on a well... sometimes the well, depending on the water table will put out iron water that can appear orange at times. This is not harmful in any way, it just looks strange in the bathtub. We do have an expensive water treatment system set up to treat the water, but the water is sometimes too strong. There is also on occasional sulphur smell in the water as well. This too is not harmful, but it can strong depending on the water table. The drinking water is filtered even more thoroughly than the tap water too.

About Katie & Steven Robert Jones

We came to Virginia from Texas so I (Steven) could finish my college degree, but got into the vacation rental business by accident. :) We have three daughters under the age of 5. We have 8 rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats, 2 ponies, 8 goats & about 50 chickens.

We believe service is what sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 or 3 in the morning). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin, unlike most other rentals where you access a lock box and walk into a dark cold house. If it is Winter time and you let us know in advance that you want a fire, we'll even have a real wood burning fire going for you. We are always available. We live right here on the mountain and we really mean it when we say that we are always available. If you need us at 4 am or have a problem, please do not ever hesitate to let us know. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. We would be honored if you would allow us the opportunity to serve you.

Katie & Steven Robert Jones purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Katie & Steven Robert Jones chose Harrisonburg

This cabin is in a great location. Whippoorwills are very common in the Spring to early Summer months as are Hummingbirds. The sound of Gum Run rushing by about 100 yards across the front yard is very peaceful.

What makes this cabin unique

There are 3 hiking trails within walking distance of the cabin (two of which can only be accessed from from our private land). There are numerous other trails within a very short drive of the cabin.

Lovely cabin near National Forest...

  • 4 of 5
The cabin is quaint and peaceful. Situated very close to the George Washington National Forest which allows for a fairly easy, but beautiful hike. The cabin was exactly as described. The family (Katie and Steven) were there to check us in and were very nice and hospitable. The cabin overall was quite comfortable and cozy. The beds slept very well, also.

One fairly significant issue that should be noted from our visit were what appeared to be mice. The first night we did see a mouse scurrying on the screened-in porch. Throughout the rest of the stay we would hear a mouse or two scurrying within the walls or above the ceiling. This freaked out the kids a bit and would come down from the loft in the middle of the night in order to sleep in the second bedroom. If it were just me and my wife, it would not have been an issue, but due to the fact that it upset the kids, I thought it should be something to share with others with kids who may be considering this cabin.

Otherwise, the cabin was wonderful and would definitely consider returning again if we end up in that part of Virginia again.

Exactly as Described, Idyllic Location

  • 5 of 5
We arrived late afternoon, and Katie was quick to follow to let us in and show us around. She's very personable and made us feel right at home - even offered to get a few supplies from "in town" if we noticed anything amiss. The cabin is outfitted perfectly for our needs; the beds in the loft were perfect for the kiddos (ages 6-6-7). The two bedrooms were small, briefly appointed, and very comfortable. The pillows were so nice, in fact, that if I'd had a bigger bag I may have snuck one home... just kidding. But comfortable! We enjoyed a nice fire for an hour or so one night - other nights were just too chilly. The kids loved running through the woods and leaves, and visiting the neighbors farm animals. All technology works great and as described; the kitchen is lacking a few things, notably a good condition skillet with unscathed non-stick coating. We brought our own muffin pan, but if I hadn't asked I would have been frustrated. Our only issue - which was out of control of Katie - is the water pressure was down to a trickle since our arrival. They seemed so alarmed about it - and I didn't see it in any other reviews - so it surely is an anomaly. We do plan on returning in 2015, maybe for a longer stay!

Perfect Getaway Cabin!

  • 5 of 5
Me and five girlfriends recently visited this beautiful cabin for 3 nights. It was the perfect rustic getaway with modern touches. He had plenty of nice linens and a fully stocked kitchen. Upon arrival Katie had the cabin warm and welcoming and met us to give us a personal tour. Her husband came by each night and lite a bonfire for us. They provided great hospitality and were there very anything we needed. The location is great and within 30 minutes of any restaurants, grocery store or gas station you may need. There are also many wineries and tourist attractions less than an hour ago. I will definitely be revisiting the Gum Run Cabain again soon!

Cozy cabin with many options

  • 5 of 5
This cabin was perfect for us. We take an annual grandfather/father/son camping trip and this year we chose this place based on the referral of a friend who liked one of the other properties of the Jones family.
Nice modern appliances and cable/wifi (if needed). My kids are usually hard to peel away from the technology but they didn't even once ask to watch TV during our 3 day stay.
We got a few fresh eggs from the hens out back and did some fishing along the creek. We also went to Shenandoah Caverns only about 40 minutes away.
We would have loved to stay another night but couldn't this time. We would love to come back!

Beautiful wood cabin feel! EXCELLENT!

  • 5 of 5
I can't say enough about this cozy cabin in the woods. We stayed as just a couple but cannot wait to take our kids when they are a little older! The little loft with 4 twin beds will be perfect for them.
The cabin was clean and well kept. The owners, Steven and Katie, were so inviting and hospitable. The cedar planking on the walls gave the whole house an authentic smell. We absolutely enjoyed our time there. Can't wait to come back!
(PS - the wifi in the cabin was a nice added convenience)

Lots of Character

  • 4 of 5
The cabin is rustic and cozy. And the area is picturesque. The drive to the cabin was something out a book that might take place in Amish Country. It's beautiful, and you can tell life is slower there. It's quiet. Peaceful. Simple. It's a retreat. A place to go, slow down, and just be still. We enjoyed the quiet of the cabin, but also the close proximity to James Madison University and the surrounding area. Since my husband and I went to JMU, and then lived for several years in Harrisonburg, we were there to reminisce, and just to enjoy the benefits of being in that area. The Dayton Farmer's Market and the Shenandoah Farmer's Market are as wonderful as we remembered. The park system is first rate, and we enjoyed walking and observing the area we used to call home. Our sons loved the pick-up soccer games that took place at Purcell Park. And our girls adored the "Dream Come True" playground, which was beautifully situated, as well as warm and inviting. This cabin served as a wonderful oasis for our trip down memory lane. We hope to be able to visit again soon.
