This mid-century masterpiece, Beech Grove, is set back from Prospect Hill Road, one of the most prestigious roads in Berkshire County; Famous for it's impressive and statuesque homes. What sets it apart from other properties is its modern design, which is hard to find in the Berkshires. Set on an exquisite, level 1.5 acre clearing with a perimeter of woods on all sides, guests are afforded great privacy, yet a walk-to-town location. Tanglewood is 2 miles away and the town beach is a 1 mile bike ride. Your never far from the cultural and recreational attractions in the Southern Berkshires at Beech Grove with the towns of Great Barrington and Lee 10 minutes away and Lenox 5 minutes.
The floor plan for public rooms is open, while the bedrooms off the main hall to the rear of the house are private. Vaulted ceilings with high, angular transom windows and a plethora of skylights throughout the property allow for tremendous light and airflow all day. Vaulted ceilings and mid-century furnishings are in keeping with the overall modern design. The 3 bedrooms and 2 baths are complemented by a sun room surrounded by sliders, open-plan kitchen, spacious living room, dining room for six and porch. The master bedroom suite gets morning sun with a view to the woods beyond and has an attached full bath with tub/shower combination and vaulted skylight. Sleeping here is pleasant with the ceiling fan gently bringing in the smell of the pines. It also has direct access to the sun porch through the sliding glass doors. Wonderful for morning coffee. Beech Grove is the perfect assemblage of modernity and country life.
I originally grew up in Orange County, NY in a community very similar to the Berkshires, Upon graduation, I moved to New York City where I began a 20-year career in the travel industry. During the course of those years, I serviced a discriminating travelers in nearly every aspect of travel .
My husband and I moved to the Berkshires in 1998 and purchased an historic, four family building in Great Barrington, which I converted to short term, furnished vacation and corporate rental business. I ran that business for 12 years, with great success.
In 2004, we purchased a Victorian beauty, which required an extensive gut renovation. Between 2005-2007, we rebuilt that house (Homeaway# 237736) from foundation to chimney. At this point, I studied and passed my Massachusetts Real Estate and Construction Supervisor exams. I now work for Berkshire Property Agents in Great Barrington - the number 1 sales agency in South County - and have my own development business, Green Gables.
In 2008, I was diagnosed with Stage IIIC breast cancer. Through drive, research and commitment, I beat it in six months - without surgery. I have started a non-profit. WIN (Women's Integrative Network) to enlighten women struggling with cancer about options and tools available to them utilizing integrative medicine.
In 2011, I turned my attention to the renovation of our historic multi-family building in Great Barrington, which I spearheaded as designer, developer and general contractor. The building sold as four gorgeous condominiums in record time: eight months (in a down market and at nearly asking price).
With my background in the service industries of hospitality and travel, as well as design and construction, I know what travelers want - comfort, convenience, cleanliness, dependability and location.
Laura Fetherolf purchased this house in 2013
I first came to the Berkshires on a weekend camping trip in 1993 (or so) from my little apartment in NYC. I'd never camped. Although I probably won't ever camp again, when I stepped out of the car with my pack, I said to my fellow tent-mates, 'This is where I am going to live.' I grew up in Orange County New York in the 1970's and the Berkshires reminded me so much of that era in topography and lifestyle, before the mass exodus from NYC to Orange County and when it was still rural. Yet, we have all the cultural events such as a big city. And fabulous recreation.
I purchased this house the first day it was listed on the market, which made a lot of people angry as their was a line of interested parties behind me. It is nearly impossible to find a house in Berkshire County with modern architecture. I have been in real estate development for several years and always had in my mind a very certain type of modern home for my private house. This was it. When I first saw the house, I was struck by how beautiful the setting was: a level 1.5 acres with an abundance of beautiful, old trees surrounding the perimeter, making for a very private space. Originally moving from NYC and having lived in several spots in the Berkshires, privacy was not something I was used to. I knew this was THE ONE. The unique architecture, with its many windows and skylights, affords lots of light and sun: something I crave. The house is the perfect assemblage of modern design in a private, country setting on one of the most beautiful roads in Berkshire County. It is very peaceful: a feeling of being in the woods, yet loads of light and air and close to everything.
'Beech Grove' is located just one mile from the quaint village of Stockbridge, home of the famous American painter, Norman Rockwell. Stockbridge is the center of the Berkshires, a county rife with cultural and recreational offerings. Each town offers a myriad of galleries, boutiques, fine restaurants and a plethora of historic sites. Music lovers the world over flock here in summer to enjoy performances at Tanglewood (2 miles), home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Jacob's Pillow Dance, theater at Shakespeare & Company, Berkshire Theater Festival and Barrington Stage Company. Once the home to gilded age 'cottages', tours are available of these historic homes such as Edith Wharton's Mount and Naumkeag (across the street). Spend time at area museums, such as Norman Rockwell Museum (3 miles), Clark Art Institute and Chesterwood.
An abundance of hiking is available along the Appalachian Trail, as well as it's offshoots and our mountain ridges. Biking is a popular pastime here through our quaint villages and historic carriage roads. There are also a few rail trails that are worth checking out. There are no less than 10 golf courses in the Berkshires. We are located a few minutes from the courses at Stockbridge Country Club, Cranwell Spa, Pittsfield Country Club and, further afield, Egremont Country Club. Winter offers excellent skiing at four area mountains: Bousquet, Jiminy Peak, Butternut and Catamount. Ice fishing is also available and skating both indoor and out.
